Well, here's a change. Instead of putting the Wii on the level of last-gen consoles, which some developers have done recently, Will Wright believes that the Wii is the only console deserving of a "next-gen" title. The Spore creator recently told CVG, "Somebody asked me what I thought next generation meant and what about the PlayStation 3 was next generation. The only next gen system I've seen is the Wii - the PS3 and Xbox 360 feel like better versions of the last, but pretty much the same game with incremental improvement." To Wright, next-gen consoles must reach a new demographic, which the Wii has done. Furthermore, it's Wright's Xbox 360 that sits unused, collecting dust, while his Wii gets played constantly.
We don't completely agree with Wright's assessment, since we think that the Xbox 360 and PS3 bring more than graphics to the table. Still, it's nice to hear a well-known developer praising the merits of the Wii rather than dismissing it because of its weaker graphics.

Wii and XBox 360 are totally last-gen because they still have rumble. It was smart of Sony to remove outdated features such as backwards compatibility and rumble (even if they ended up putting rumble back in), because features are a thing of the pasts. A modern console should be able to do absolutely nothing but play media, connect to the internet, and have good graphics and advanced AI. Realistic raindrops are a ton more important than anything else they could possibly offer.

I've been saying that forever. What's really next gen? The same shit with better graphics, or truly new gameplay? Hate it or love it, Warioware offers a much newer experience than Halo 3.
I do wish Wii would keep putting out more games of great depth though. I want more games like Metroid Prime 3! ... from third parties, if possible.
I'd be happy enough if Will Wright put out a deep simulation game for the Wii.

No, it was another developer who was working on Spore. Chris Hecker was the one who originally said that the Wii was "2 gamecubes duct taped together". Also, please delete those excessive comments by Nick(that PS3lark).

When you say that the 360 and PS3 bring more than just better graphics, can you specify? I don't see where those systems do anything but add more power to the previous generation hardware and pass it off as being "next-gen". So, if there is something groundbreaking that they offer that I am missing, please let me know.

I'm an idiot and my browser through up on me, I bid my humble apologies! And I was wrong, again - I submit for my punishment.
However I'm not a PS3Lark, look at my profile and you'd see.... and how would me getting mad at what I thought was the person who whined about the Wii before make me a PS3 Fanboy?

I wouldn't say that reaching a new demographics as necessary for a console to be considered next-gen, it's just a smart business move. However, I think it is necessary for a system to actually DO something to expand on what we had last-gen. For example, things like the FX chip (no, that is not the origin of my userneme for anyone who may be wondering), the D-Pad, the analog stick, online console gaming, motion control, etc. These may then be coupled with things like accessories, the promise of original games, new storage media, better GPU, etc. to further enhance the experience but it must fist do something innovative.
The mind-set of tomorrow, the technologies of the future, revolve around the briliant concept of defying convention and other consoles merely go with convention and inside the box thinking. That's not to say the other consoles don't get fun games, but they aren't something we should aspire to. The games may be decently fun but the consoles themselves should be somethig we strive to get away from, and at that point, should we really give our money to companies like that and make them think convention is good? This is why I don't think any of the current-gen consoles should be considered save the Wii.
I'm not an ignorant Ninty fanboy that will proclaim Nintendo glory at the top of his lungs for all the land to hear, I'm simply a concerned favor. I am a Nintendo fan and a fan of games in general, not a fanboy, the unfortunate condition of the games market makes us basically the same.

Yeah, he's oversimplifying the definition
But it is nice to see someone oversimplify in Wii's favor for once, a fresh stance from that of people like the Assassin's Creed director

Sorry I have to admit that the 360 is nothing more than the original with a few improvements. Yes I like the 360 but I wished it had something that made it different from its predecessor.
The PS3 is a damn computer but since it's output is through a television and not a monitor then it gets considered as a console.
The Wii did in fact bring something new to the table. Motion controls plus the point and click is what makes it the better of the bunch. If you want a PS3 then upgrade your PC or get a new one. If you want the 360 then get it but if you had the original XBOX then stick it out this gen with that. If you want something new that has never been done then pick up a Wii and experience a new world of gaming.

14 explains EXACTLY why I will back Nintendo over anyone in the market right now. We need someone there who will take the big risks and "flip out" as everyone thought they did when they launched this puppy.
Otherwise, gaming WILL get stagnant.

8 is right. If you want to have some serious fun with the wii, check out Zack and Wiki, I am so addicted to that game it isn't funny.
Speaking of Zack and Wiki and next gen... I think that it completely defines why Wii is more next gen. It's hard to explain. It's like the way it makes you think about using the Wiimote and the way that doing so puts you in the game! Like this morning I was doing a puzzle, and you have to get into this cave, but it's dark, so you grab a stick and set it on fire, but when you walk into the cave, a snake statue blows it out, so you have to cover the head of the stature with a piece of pottery, here's the thing though, you're holding the pottery (the wiimote), and you have to turn it upside down and actually toss it onto the snakes head. It just blew my mind! Like, I missed three times, because I ddnt think id have to throw my wiimote (with the strap on of course) that accurately. But the way they did it, it felt like I was really the character, standing in the jungle, struggling to cover this snakes head. And when I finally did it, it was so rewarding! I was so immersed in the game at that moment. On the 360, I would have just pushed a button and no big deal, move on, but it felt so neat to actually DO it.
That is next gen. Using a new form of interaction for complete immersion. Nintendo did it. People may not realize it yet, but they've changed gaming forever - again.
