But, just because Nintendo made it easy, doesn't mean that you chose that path, right? Maybe you travel with your Wii a lot and when it is resting at home, you lay it down on its side horizontally? Maybe the console stand isn't in line with your house's decor or you think the rubber feet on the Wii itself is suitable enough for its placement on some wooden table or, dare we say, carpet?
Either way, it seems like such a small question, but one which would provide an insightful answer. To us, anyway.

It needs its stand in the vertical position, otherwise you'd be blocking an important air vent, especially if it's on carpet :-0
If you look at the stand you'll notice it's drilled out below where the bottom vent would be cradled.
Anyway, vertical for me in a nice cooling led stand that I picked up from ebay. Unlike most of the nonsense Xbox360 fans this one actually does it's job, the fan may feel weak but no longer does my console get hot on the side with WC:24 enabled as it used to with the old stand.

My Wii is on the vertical, because it stands proud and strong against the PS3 and 360(Really because its cooler and its a disadvantage bending down if your tall).

Your Wii should be laying down. The motor that pulls the game in has to work harder to pull the game in vertical. Just like the iMacs that have problems with that since they are also vertical insert. But then again my iMac hasn't had any problems and it has been 4 years since I got it. So maybe I will switch the Wii to vertical.

Mine sits horizontally because it's the most convenient...i don't have room for it to stand vertically and it's easy to just stack electronic devices.

My Wii iis standing tall. This way I have a nice slot behind it to keep the Nyko charging station (with the 2 remotes that do not have batteries in them all of the time), and a nice space to put the other 2 next to the console on he other side. Keeps is looking nice and sleek.
I was concerned about the drive motor, but I have faith in Nintendo's designers, and if they are ALWAYS showing the Wii standing, it will survive it's vertical orientation.

Mine lays horizontal. I like the vertical look better, especially in the stand, but I don't like the idea of wearing out the drive and I usually don't have enough vertical space in my AV cabinet.

That air vent isn't blocked in the horizontal position if you don't shove the Wii up against something on it's right side.

Mines vertical because it sits on top of my TV stand to the left of the TV where there is just enough space. I wouldn't have anywhere else to put it otherwise so it works out great.

for me it all depends on what room im using it in.
if its in the main room on the nice big tv it stands tall, if its im my own room on the smaller tv it has a rest and gets to lie down.

I had to mail my first Wii back for video processsing issues and then mailed me back a new one.
The new one has issues grabbing gamecube discs especially when its vertical, so I've been rockin it horizontally.
Anyone think I should mail the 2nd Wii back. I never got around to it because I was so fed up when I recieved it that there was yet another issue. Since it isnt anything with the picture quality, I figured it wasnt worth the bitching to Nintendo yet again.

Yeah, but either do it now or wait a couple/few months after Christmas because they're going to be pretty slammed.

Depends. Right now the Wii is beneath the TV (entertainment center--I'm in my college apartment which came with one) so it can be vertical. If space is tight though, and it has to be in front of the TV, I don't mind leaving it horizontal. I prefer vertical because I know, even though I don't give too much credit to the overheating rumors, every bit of surface area helps cooling, so how can it hurt?

It has to balance on top of a slanted speaker, so I've got it on its side.
I was tempted to stand it on top of my friend's PS2 fatty (you know, like a victorious midget conqueror), but there's already a mess of game controllers there.

Horizontal
I use my Wii for GC as much as for Wii, and even then many Wii functions do(N64 VC) or will (Brawl) need GC capabilities
Plus, i may sound like a codger, but my consoles have always sat down, and they will continue to sit, i disapproved of this trend the PS2 began, and Wii, PS3, and 360 are emulating
Get off my lawn!

Horizontal. We've played a lot of GCN games on the Wii, and the corded controllers have managed to pull it over more than once (we were using the stand!). I'm pretty sure that all those falls are the reason that our disk drive started making so much noise, so, now that Ninty has been kind enough to repair it, we keep it safely on its side. Looks lamer, though.

Mines on the upside as it's the only it doesn't look like some common HDD.
Only thing wrong with it is that it makes a buzzing comparable to a mini-chainsaw when loading a disc. I got mine back in February, but i've heard some newer Wiis, and they're silent as Mike Myers next to Kenye West. Could I send mine in to get it "repaired"? Or is this reaching?

I too enjoy the vertical look more, but for safety's sake I keep it horizontal. I've got a slab of marble near the TV, which is always fairly cold, so I leave it sitting there. When I lift it up, the usually "hot" side is about room temperature.
Personally, I don't really buy into the overheating, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I always wanted it horizontal, but due to space, and the fact that a ps2 slim doesn't look good on top of a Wii, and doesn't work (disk tray) below. The stand looks nice enough, and it's nice to have it be cooler with the fan vent in the bottom. Either way, it'll make any room twice as sexy, and the Wii's good rep can't be thwarted by mere placement. Power to the Miiple! (hahaha, get the pun?)
NOTE: to make comment sound as sexy as the Wii is, replace all "Wii" with "Revolution" and take out the corny Mii closer.
