Nintendo might not be cutting the price of the Wii, but that won't stop five lucky Japanese folks from getting one for 250 yen ($2.17 USD). Yep, Japanese online retailer GMAX will be selling five Wii consoles at a 99% discounted price between November 9 and December 9.

Trogdor: Think about it. They probably buy the wiis wholesale at $150 dollars. 150 * 5 = 750. Earnings from wii ($100) * 8 = $800. They need to get 13 customers from this value deal thing (8 customers + 5 winners) to break even.

The problem "The Ron" is that they would make a ton more money if its regular price. Do all the rules of good business do not apply?
maybe it would work out if "buy wii and 3 crappy games and 4 3rd party accessories" and they can make money that way but this just stupid business wise.

Think of it as an advertising expense, Adv2k1. They might lose around $1000 on the five consoles, but they will have tons of customers pouring into the store (probably buying other things). In fact, this is the second major video game website I've seen report the same story. That's worth a lot in advertising, and it is very good business sense if you ask me.
Keep in mind, they aren't selling ALL Wiis at that price, just five. I mean it would take a pretty big moron to sell ALL their consoles at a loss! ;)

This reminds of that episode of Rocko's Modern Life where there was a 99% off sale. Rocko missed the sale by one second then his head grew to the entire size of the TV screen and demanded that he get his groceries for the 99% off price. Then as he leaves the store all of the groceries fall out of his trunk as he drives away.
