It was a heartbreaking moment, the first time we were ever forced to jump off Yoshi's back to save our own selfish skin in Super Mario World. We reached for him over the edge of the platform, watching as he fell further and further away until he was nothing more than a tiny green dot in the distance. In hysterics, we yelled out to him, Last-of-the-Mohicans style, "I will find you!"After the thousandth time we nonchalantly discarded Yoshi, though, leaving an imprint of our boot on his dinosaur nose as we leaped to higher ground, we'd been too desensitized by his many sacrifices to regret any one particular death. Sometimes, we even celebrated it: "That's what you get, you little jerk. That's what you get for making us chase you around and lose our feather."
But this faux motivational poster, spotted at Aeropause, calls our attention back to the cruelty and sadness of the technique. Seeing those teary eyes and outstretched arms is killing us inside. It's all made worse by Mario's refusal to even turn around and acknowledge his friend's ill-fated demise. The Koopa Paratroopa flying away in the background is clearly upset with the whole scene. We wouldn't be surprised if the event haunted him for the rest of his life, eventually leading him to alcohol and drug abuse.

Hell, it could be leading me to both those forms of self-abuse right this instant. I refuse to say. But there is one form of self-abuse that this painful and shocking scene is not making me feel like engaging in, and that makes me feel so much healthier psychologically. LOL They should make 'Wii Shrink' to tell you why you're crazy!

That is to tell 'one' why they are crazy. I don't think you are any crazier than any of the rest of us, Eric. LOL

Hahaha, so true.
I think the most heartbreaking was when you would jump off and he would land in lava, slowly sinking but never losing his gaze on you, seemingly wanting to say "why?", but being so innocent and not understanding things such as betrayal.

Yeah, Yoshi slowly burning in the lava was too much for my poor heart. It's like that scene from Terminator II. You can almost imagine Yoshi giving a thumbs up as he sacrifices himself for the good of Mario ;).

I always died with my Yoshi. I seriously could never just let him die like that, poor little guy.

Beautifully written. I am pro-Yoshi and never release him even if it means death. I'd rather die with Yoshi than watch him go alone. I love how to music changes when you're on Yoshi's back. I love that dino

strange, I created this image this year. I don't like that they cropped my image, but it's okay. The uncropped one is at kennyvelez.com

I've seen this motivational poster a long time ago; and many, many times on 4chan. The article was really funny though.
