Evidently, 2D Metroid on the Wii would rock our world
It's unlikely to ever actually happen, but have you ever pondered what a new 2D Metroid on the Wii would look like? Artist Alchemist Defined evidently thought long and hard about it, before committing his vision to canvas. The end result is ... well ... frankly, it's stunning, and if there really is some almighty, omnipresent deity watching over us all, there'll be a game that looks very similar to this in development now at Retro.
There's a selection of bigger, more wallpaper-friendly versions of this over at the artist's site, as linked below. Viewing them comes highly recommended.

I'm sure they will.
I'll eat my hat if Nintendo hasn't given us new 2D versions of Mario, Zelda, Metroid and DKC by this time next year on Wii Ware.

I'll say this yet again. I want to know what happens to Samus and Adam after fusion.

Dread was rumored to be the sequel where Samus and Adam were running away from the Galactic Federation. Or something.

I'd be more than satisfied with a Super Metroid remake that had those graphics.
And I concur Crazylink; Fusion's story was surprisingly pretty good, and I do want to know what happens afterwards. Then again I'd take any excuse for a new 2-D Metroid for either the Wii or the DS.

The art looks nice and all... but IMO, it doesn't piece together what a 2D Metroid could look like on Wii / Modern Console Hardware.
The Point of view is way too close to the action (Samus takes up way too much screen space). If it automatically / manually Zooms in and out that would make sense. But that doesn't tend to work well with hand-drawn 2D games. In order to be seamless, it would need to be at a fixed view, with as little sprite zooming as possible (it was understandable on SNES, and to some extent N64 / PSX / Saturn / DC... If you are putting the time in a 2D game of this magnitude, in this generation, you need to draw every frame of the sprite in order to make it animate and blend with the environment as seamlessly as possible.
Otherwise, I like the art. A few off-key items (The Eye of the Mother Brain isn't in synch with the rest of Mother Brain - Multiple sprites for a single object / character rarely works with organics). I'd love to see something like this blossom, Metroid is my favorite Nintendo franchise, and it's 2D game has always delivered an intense gaming experience. I'd just hate to see it turn into a 2.5D deal... Metroid deserves the Hand-Drawn love, be it High-Res, realism - or - Portable Screen-sized pixel-by-pixel, meticulously detailed comic stylization. Metroid needs a new 2D entry.

Years ago when Quake3 came out, I joined a team that was trying re-create Super Metroid on the engine. I was the lead level 'designer' (re-creator). We made 3D environments but made a new camera system to make it a side scroller.
We got a STOP letter from Nintendo. God that was so long ago, I wish I could find the original work/photo's. Maybe its still on the planetquake website somewhere.

Not the 90s, anyway. Like the wallpapers at least at 1280*800, but preferably higher

I've been VERY much wanting a return to 2D gameplay on a nonportable like Wii for ANY classic franchise for a long time. Metroid, Mario, Castlevania, Sonic, Contra (Shattered Soldier RULED!), etc. Anything like that.
See, here's the problem: I love classic franchises, and I prefer the 2D versions. BUT, I HATE playing games on portable systems.
Unfortunately, I see this as even less likely to happen than ever before. Not just because all the developers consistently REFUSE to put 2D gameplay on non-portables these days, but because Nintendo themselves is now far more interested in all of their non-game bullshit to actually bother with any of their classic franchises. I mean seriously, for the past few years, the vast majority of classic Nintendo franchise games are just farmed out to outside companies. Nintendo can take their damn Wii Fit, Brain Age and Nintendogs garbage and cram them, I'd MUCH rather get something like "New Mario Wii", or "Metroid Dread Wii".

I would have to say that a Wii Ware version of a new 2-D Metroid wouldn't be out of the question. I think that Nintendo is smart enough to know a cash cow when they see one. Retro wouldn't be developing it, though. They, themselves said that they were going to take a break from the Metroid franchise.
