After a week off, Japan's Virtual Console is slow to pick back up. Really slow. Only two games made it to the download service this time, both martial-arts related, and both not very good. Konami's Yie Ar Kung-Fu at least deserves a bit of respect for being one of the first fighting games. Of course, that means it suffers the fate of all pre-SF2 fighters and isn't much fun. But at least it's better than Urban Champion. Yie Ar Kung-Fu is also notable for its deceptively banal title. Yie and Ar are Mandarin for one and two, which means that the game's title is actually the adorable One-Two Kung-Fu.
The other game is Samurai Ghost. It's not really any better in Japanese.
- Yie Ar Kung Fu (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
- Genpei Toumaden Kannoni (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)

Yie Ar Kung-Fu is a great arcade game. Not so much on the NES. I'll stick to the XBOX Arcade version for this title. I still can't beat the chain guy.

Man, I remember playing "Yie Ar Kung Fu" on my Commodore 64 so many years ago. It had great theme music for the opening title, very techno. I'd often times just load up the game to listen to the theme music as I was getting ready for school or whatnot. Since this is the NES/Famicom version, the music is probably not as good.
I remember fighting the chain guy, he was tough. Second only to the fan girl and the stupid bo-staff guy who was the boss at the end I think...

The Virtual Console seems to be getting crappier and crappier every month.
I don't expect top tier games each week, but come on.
Where's Kirby Superstar, Puggsy, Castle of Illusion, etc.
Apart from Majora's Mask and those wrestling games (both genres I have no interest in but I understand there appeal) have they already run out of decent 64 games. I know the 64 was no Saturn, but it surely had some decent games that didn't star Mario in some form.
