Because Super Smash Bros. Brawl won't consume enough time on its own, rumor has it that the game's release will be accompanied by the appearance of Super Smash Bros. on the Virtual Console. We're not sure where you stand on purchasing a fuzzier, arguably inferior fighting game on the very same day you get to take home your shiny new copy of Brawl, but we imagine that very few of you will need your arm twisting.
This particularly juicy slice of speculation first appeared in Nintendo Power, and we wouldn't bet against it being true, especially as the Virtual Console debuts of Metroid and Super Mario Bros. 3 more or less coincided with the releases of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Super Mario Galaxy respectively.
On an entirely separate note, how much has that original boxart aged? Day-um.

Oh, good, so in about 2 months, sometime around March 10th 2008, we'll get to play the original Smash Bros, too.
A delay is all but confirmed at this point =(

Several retailers have been changing their release dates for Brawl to around 3/10, most notably including Gamefly, who is usually right on the money about these things.

I hope beyond hope that this February date sticks. There's just been some rumbling around other sites; mainly retailers changing their release dates to March or later, some even TBD. Those sites are usually wrong so hopefully we don't have anything to worry about, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see a couple week to three-month delay.

The box art looked goofy when the game came out. But that's beside the point, I would absolutely love to go back and play the original again. I have the cart somewhere, but my 64 was sold a few months ago. If they could throw in a lil online play that would be even better. I think they should put it up before Brawl comes out though!

Cool, I guess. But if your playing Brawl, why even bother with the original X_x, they all play about the same anyway...

Arguably inferior? Smash 64 is still one of the best games out there. Why play 64 when Brawl is out? Because of all this new gimmicky shit. Seriously.

I can haz online?
Seriously, if they ever break the "no modifications" rule for VC, just once in the entire lifespan of the Wii, I think I'd be willing to cash that in for online multiplayer in the N64 version of SSB.
I'm sure they *won't*, but we can dream, right?

I recently played the original, N64 version of Smash... I'd rather BIFF and ZAP may way through Melee or Brawl before going back to the eye-bleed causing polygons of that game.

Much like Melee had those bonus that involved having a save file for certain games (like the olimar trophy) what are the odds you get something for having a GC memory card with a melee file plugged in and/or downloading the original (like I was planning on anyway)

If they had released the N64 version for VC on Dec 3rd, I probably would have gotten it. But this close to Brawl's release, I don't much see the point anymore.

I always thought this had been assumed, people were clamoring for it back in early December as "compensation" for the Brawl delay
much like Super Metroid -> MP3, so original to Brawl

What's wrong with the boxart? I don't view it any different now as I did when the game first came out, and I was like 10 years old then. It's just a comic-bookish take on Nintendo characters, and I think it was pulled off pretty well. It looks better than Brawl's boxart, at least.
Now, if you want to talk about the game itself aging, that I can completely agree with, because after playing Melee it's pretty much impossible for me to go back to the original. Why anyone prefers the ridiculously slow speed of the original over Melee is way beyond me.

I like them both in their own way. With the slower speed and more emphasis on basic attacks and throws than on pure smashes and dodging, you get a strategy that's more ground-based
It is hard to go back, in terms of being able to readjust to the timing, but otherwise its perfectly tolerable

Oh, I forgot to mention that Pickachu is an absolute KO machine in the original. He was much faster than anyone else and his throws had a decent reach. Not so much in Melee

I prefer the original. I liked how 'floaty' it was. Melee feels like it keeps trying to drag you back to the ground in comparison.
I never got into Melee that much because of that. Apparently Brawl feels a lot more like 64, though, going by the accounts of people who played it. So if that's true, I'm very happy.

Why not???
The original is great, yeah, it may be somehow slow paced compared to Melee, but still, doing all those combos with falcon was pretty neat, at a point where i would take on a friend and beat his whole 7 lives without him even touch me, never ever let him do anything, not even a land recovery (also did this with mario and kirby, never found out how to do this with another character)
I like the original game, i'm planning on getting this when it's released, cuz i'm a little short on money and won't be able to get brawl for a time, and melee, damn, can't stop playing it

I just might get the original way later after Brawl. I just kind of like getting old 64 games on my Wii to reminisce on games I liked to play as a little kid, like Donkey Kong 64 and Mario Kart. I think that old games can be tougher than new games. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR THE BIG SUPER MARIO GALAXY **SPOILER** DON'T READ THE NEXT SENTENCE. For example, I'm stuck on Mario 64 yet I am already halfway through Galaxy playing as Luigi.
OK, its safe now.
I think that some new games are too focused on their new features then how they challenge the player. I have a dreadful feeling that this might happen to Brawl.

Unfortunately, I can't help but trust an increasing amount of retailers all giving roundabouts the same date over a fansite that, if memory serves, initially said that Sheik was officially announced when she wasn't.
I don't expect a delay in Japan at this point, but a North American one seems REALLY likely right now to me.

Much like other fighting games, people still play the old Smash Bros instead of the new ones. I was recently at a Smash tournament that even had a Smash 64 event, which was just as thrilling as the Melee events. The two finalists were hella good! Moved faster than anything I've ever seen in Smash 64.
It all comes down to preferences. There's a lot of difference in Game Mechanics between 64 and Melee, and the same will probably be true in Brawl. Honestly, I wouldn't mind being able to play all 3 on the same console, seeing as all 3 will probably be different yet fun at the same time. Besides, GC controller is much better for playing Smash, pretty much everyone agrees.
If you're not one of these people, please don't flame me =(
Merely stating a majority opinion.

I get a laugh out of seeing box-art for games I can't remember playing, like the one for the original Mega-Man game. Of course, now that I look at box-art from games of my own childhood it's becoming harder to point fingers.

FYI: Some of you guys still haven't realized that SSBB supports FOUR types of control: 1. Original GC/Wavebird, 2. Classic Controller, 3. Wiimote only and 4. Wiimote+Nunchuk
@ all those retro fans out there: Settle down...everything will be fine. Stop complaining about the delay, you expect a great game and you will get it. No one will talk about the waiting when it is finally out - what are we europeans supposed to say? We haven't heard ANY release date so far.

SSB: need not buy it on the Wii VC. Still play it w/ friends on N64. Most people won't be able to get into it now, but its still hella fun if you played it anytime before or around when the GC came out.
SSBB: :( Me no likey delays. It better be 3^(9^8) times more awesome.
