We don't normally highlight a single review, preferring to study the opinions of multiple publications at a time, but this Super Smash Bros. Brawl perfect score from Famitsu gives us a chance to break out of our routine; as you can see from the post title, it has also provided us an opportunity to bring back Mortal Kombat phrases. "Get over here!" Remember that one? It's from Scorpion.Super Smash Bros. Brawl joins the ranks of The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, Soul Calibur, Vagrant Story, Zelda: Wind Waker, Nintendogs, and Final Fantasy XII, all being titles that received a 40/40 score from Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, or four 10/10s from a panel of four reviewers. The critics applauded Brawl for its enjoyable adventure mode, brilliant Final Smash moves, and outstanding (!) presentation.
While Famitsu's scores shouldn't always be taken seriously, as the reputation of its reviews ranks far below that of an esteemed magazine like Edge, Famitsu hardly ever hands out 40/40s, awarding perfect scores to only seven titles in the past ten years. Perhaps this Super Smash Bros. Brawl game turned out alright after all.

Why does Mr. Perfect have an asterisk? This needs to be addressed.

Maybe he was perfect like the NE Patriots are "perfect"... after cheating that is.

Yeah, and I suppose Rodney Harrison's interception in the 4th QTR was cheating too?
Screw you dude...Patriots are perfect because they know how to get the job done. And whether it's Tom Brady, Rodney Harrison, Wes Welker, Randy Moss, Junior Seau, Teddy Bruschi or any other team member, those guys win cause they have heart and brains. And your just a jealous pisshead whose team will NEVER be as good as the greatest team of all time, the 2007 New England Patriots.
GO PATS!!!

Haha, we'll see who's the best when Ryan Grant runs for 150 yards and 2 TDs and Favre throws for another 3 to put the Packers over the Patriots in the big game.

vidGuy , Favre can't throw if he's lying on his back looking up at the sky, courtesy of Michael Strahan and Osi Umeniyora.

Yet no one is talking about Mr. Perfect. This asterisk could be an injustice and all you can think about is some football game? I'm appalled.

I'm cornfused??? They delayed the game saying it's not finished, yet Famitsu is giving a perfect score? Is Nintendo lying about it not being done or is Famitsu reviewing an unfinished game?

They played the Japanese version, which is coming out Jan 31st and has most likely already gone gold. It was the US version that got delayed.

I felt the delay was because they had just barely missed their deadline for the game to go gold, so they only need an extra week to rush it to stores in Japan, but they feel that America, between the different packaging, region encoding, localization, etc, needs a month so that they can pull off a fully stocked launch of the title

Isn't that usually the way reviews work? With nearly complete review code?

I wouldn't normally take thier review seriously. I would never give FF12 a perfect score because it isn't the best final fantasy ever.

I'm with you there...
... but I'm not going to agree with you that it was FFVII...
.... my faves were V and X...

7 was the first final fantasy I played. But I prefere 5,9&10.
5&9 for the retro and classic look.
But 10 was far the best espcially the sphere grid system, monster capturing & some of the extra side bosses and side quests. Looked great as well - defeated the first 4 dark aeons - never got round to the last.
All of a sudden I feel like starting it again :P

With a country that LOVES pets... especially puppies...
(and especially if most of their houses are too small to own an actual puppy)
...it's not too surprising really.

Dude not counting Mario, Mario World, and Tetris, (those games all sold in a bundle) Nintendogs is the third highest selling video game of all time.

Edge is an esteemed magazine? Are you serious or is that some kind of in-joke? I've never read the magazine, so I have no opinion one way or the other, it just seems like no magazine or site carries much clout anymore (which is a good thing), so I don't get that statement.

Edge is pretty well-respected -- great production values and writing, and it usually gets its scoring spot-on.
(though it did give the original SSB a 5/10)

I prefere Games tm magzine here in the UK over Edge.
I feel Edge doesn't review games in the fun aspect but more about its technical level and what special about it.
I read one review from Edge, I think it was yoshi island 2 for the ds. In that review it told me nothing about the game or gameplay but more about its technical skills and what you can do on the DS and how the non-orginal game is and the phychollogy behind it.
GamesTM magazine review the games fairly and will give pretty good reviews and actully tell you what makes the game good or bad.

I don't see how anyone can like Mortal Kombat anymore. Punch, punch, punch, punch, uppercut. That's the game.

Yeah, it was as simple as that.
With really cheesy characters and even cheesier moves.
So? It's just so ridiculous, it's fun.

That doesn't mean anything. Nintendogs got the same score for crying out loud.

Nintendogs was rated according to what it had to offer for its genre.
For a country who loves cute, and loves pets, IT REALLY ISN'T A SURPRISE.
Was Famitsu only for Action games?
No, I don't think so.
JUDGE A DARN GAME FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH, NOT WHAT IT IS.
This kind of stubborn-personality is exactly why great games are never made! -BECAUSE YOU NEVER TRIED IT OR EVEN GAVE IT A CHANCE FOR OTHERS!
And because of that, games aren't as great as THEY SHOULD BE now!
This is exactly the opposite of what the Wii did! Motion capabilities are a LOW... ridiculously low demands for it, on the audience side and the business side!
And despite all that, despite all your stubborness, the Wii decided to come out against all odds!!!! And look at it now!! It's exactly what people wanted in a system but never had the balls to say it!!!

And you know this how? For your information Mr I-Jump-To-Conclusions, I did buy it. And I liked it. But it's not worth a 40/40.

How did Brawl only get 40/40? it deserves at least 41/40
If this game gets rated less than 95% by anyone they should not be playing games or even looking at games and should be out living under a rock.
