Actually, he doesn't overdo it. He's a drummer. He's showing off the fact that he can drum very well, as well as proving to be entertaining by drumming to something easily recognizable. I do admit, however, he did rather overdo to on the original SMB soundtrack. This is fine, though.

I think one of the coolest things about Rock Band and music in video games is that there are so many more people interested in taking the leap to playing real instruments to experiment. While I was at NAMM last week, I saw a new drum company launching this spring called Dixon Drums and they're making high quality, aggresive drum sets on the cheap. Although it was slightly neat, I'm not nearly as impressed with this guy as he is with himself. The drumming was pretty well executed, but really nothing too difficult. What was much more impressive was the recording quality achieved in such a small (appearing) room. I wish I could afford that kind of equipment.

I always loved the music from old 8-bit nintendo games with the digitally sampled drums. Games like Super C, Ninja Gaiden II and III, Super Mario 3, and Battletoads.
Then the Genesis came along and you had higher-quality music synthesis with digitally sampled drums. Games like the first Sonic game, the Shinobi games, and the Streets of Rage games.
I absolutely would love to see/hear more drum renditions of classic games.

this is pretty good, don't get me wrong, but he lacks the swing of a drummer well-versed in jazz percussion. he clearly listen to a lost of metal, hence his overbearing style.
listen to some jazz, dude! seriously, it will make you at least twice as good. your kit sounds really good, by the way. way to keep your toms in tune. if i could just get my brother to do that...

It looks like a 9 piece to me, possibly 10. For the non-drummers of the bunch, you only count the bass drum or drums, toms, and snare when you count "pieces" on a set.
