Accordng to IGN, the NPD numbers for December hold more worth than just comparing figures for hardware and software sales in the U.S. during that month (or fueling fanboy debate). December's numbers show that the Wii enjoyed a tie ratio of 8:1, meaning that for every console sold, around 8 titles went along with it. Impressive.Considering the top titles for the month were Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Play and Sonic & Mario at the Olympics, it's a safe bet that copies of them went off the shelves with the consoles. Of course, this isn't meant to be taken as a literal statistic, as should 7 individuals walk into a store and pick up a copy of Super Mario Galaxy and 1 individual buys a console with the game, the statistic would still hold true.

Well I wasnt one of those people. I was lucky enough to find my Wii with out being forced to buy a bundle. 8 games is well over 300 bucks, more than the Wii itself! Who can play all those games at once anyhow, it took me 2 weeks to get 60 stars on Mario, I rented a few games durring that time too, but I got sick of them after 5 days and glad I only paid 6$ for a rental.

Not to factor in also the forced on consumer bundles of 8 games most of which you'd never pley let along buy seperately.

That's a dumb fact. What about people who already had a Wii and bought games? Are those people's games take out of that average?
Don't think so.

That number doesn't mean that every person that bought a wii got 8 games. It only means that, in December, the amount of wii software sold was 8 times the amount of hardware sold.

Wasnt the Toys R Us Buy 2 Wii Games get one free promotion in December? I know I bought Galaxy there to get the $25 GC in November and then went and used the $25 gift card on the 3 games (Smackdown vs RAW, Tomb Raider and WiiPlay) and got a $10 gift card on top of everything else for spending $75 which I used for an extra nunchuck to match with the extra replay Wiimote.. Methinks Toys R Us was a major contributor to the numbers. The very first day of the b2g1f sale they also had 60 wii's available at opening so I saw people with Wii's and some with as many as like 12 games for the price of 8.

Wii sold a massive amount of systems AND software this December, which is just great for Nintendo. I don't know why it wasn't mentioned in this article, but the fact is that Wii software sales were higher than the 360's in December. The tie ratio is important because it shows that not only were sales higher overall, but they were higher per system as well.

As anyone who has seen the e-Bay listings for Wii systems knows us Wii owners count the games a little differently. With Wii Sports you get 5 games and if you buy Wii Play that's another 9 games for a total of 14. If one out of three people buy Wii Play to go with their system the 8 games total seems about right.

I laugh at your cynicism that the NPD uses dirty tricks like that. If that were true the tie ratio would be 19.5 for December.
