Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.Talking about Fighter's History last week put us in a bit of a Karnov kind of mood (which we didn't realize existed until we were in it). Data East's Karnov is something that seems to have gotten into our NES collection by accident. Everybody seems to have a copy, but the game is too weird to have been intentionally popular. It's one of those games that someone lends you and then moves away, or that you get in a bundle at a garage sale, or from a closeout at a video rental store. There's not anything particularly attractive about Karnov, nothing that would cause kids to pick up the bald-fat-shirtless-Eastern-European-guy game off of the shelf. But, then, this was a system whose best-known mascot was a miniature plumber.
Karnov is an NES port of an arcade game, both of which star a guy named Karnov who ... flaps his arms around and spits fireballs at monsters in a rocky, ruinous landscape. Okay, having no idea what's supposed to be going on, we checked Wikipedia, which says that he is a circus performer "on a quest to search for treasures." Oh! Well, at least that illuminates one aspect of the game for us -- the story, indeed, does not matter.

Karnov is one of the most unintentionally creepy games on the NES. The enemies don't have any consistent visual style -- some have outlines, some don't, some are detailed-looking, and others are cartoonish -- and don't even really make sense. The first boss is a floating fish monster who throws projectiles out of some kind of seed bag around its shoulder. The game's single repeating stage music is a roughly thirty-second loop that alternates between upbeat circus-type music and a more urgent, nerve-wracking tune. This song repeats over and over again through every second of the game except when you complete a stage or die. The death theme is the happiest tune in the game, and the least annoying.

Oh hell yes!.. I used to love this game as a kid. I used to draw Karnov stages in my school notebooks, and try to come up with some turn based Karnov game using them and dice.
In hindsight that was pretty weird.
I LOVE YOU KARNOV!

LOVED Karnov
I remember my brother selling me on it, in order to gain additional bargaining power with my mom, when we were in elementary school
So our acquisition was a premeditated act.
presumably rare, by your standard, J.C.

Sorry to change the subject so early in the reply cycle, but...
Overlooked?
How bout Strider? Not the Genesis one, but the one on the NES.
Where's the love?
And how the hell did it happen that 2 completely different games got the same name like that?

Oh god yes, STRIDER!
I remember playing Strider for the first time, thinking "oh my GOD, this was made by Capcom?"
At the time, Capcom's games on NES were utterly terrible...say what you will about Ghosts n' Goblins, 1942, Trojan, and Legendary Wings, they were all horrible ports.
Then along came Strider, Mega Man, Bionic Commando...The PURPLE-Bordered series of Capcom's games...
To this day, I still find myself humming tunes from Strider's theme songs...the main title track was such a monstrous endeavor on the 8-bit system, I always hoped for a "Remake" when better technology came along...Only to be disappointed with the side-scrolling arcade/genesis games, which were nothing like the NES port. Kaine? Who the hell is Kaine??!!
I'm sorry, but Data East couldn't program their way out of a ripped condom. Data East's games were all-in-all terrible...Remember Bad Dudes? Kid Niki? Karate Champ? Robocop?
Then there's Karnov...buggy beyond belief, and the item select mechanism was...bad...the only saving grace was that you could select while the game was paused.
Yes, I think that was my favorite feature of Karnov.

I would definitely buy this one. My friend had this game and it used to drive us bonkers how hard it was.

Loved this game! I may even still have it in my attic. And it was hard. I could never finish it. I remember once watching The Price is Right and one of the prizes was an actual arcade cabinet of Karnov. I was so incredibly jealous.

One summer when I was a kid, my cousin and I spent the day hanging out with Brad Richards (now known as an NHL player for Tampa Bay) and playing Karnov. My only memory of the game is how it didn't make any sense and the controls were brutally difficult...
After that, we went outside and I "schooled" Brad at ball hockey in his back yard by scoring two very lucky goals. Good times.

I never had the NES version, but I damn sure played the Tiger Electronics version until the buttons got worn :)
Also, I loved how video games like Bad Dudes and Streets of Rage all had their fire breathing fat bosses :)

I remember playing this game in a Wunderland ($.05 arcade place) for /hours/. I have no idea why I thought the game was so amazing. When my friend rented it from the video store we played it basically all week long.
And actually, looking back at Wunderland through my now-experience mind's eye, Wunderland was one creepy place and I'm surprised I wasn't molested while there.
But Karnov was fun! I just don't remember why.

THE END
Karnov was the running joke for any game with a short and lame ending.
