The Japanese Super Smash Bros. Brawl launch has been successful, selling approximately a freaking ton of copies, but not without a few issues. Rumored supply constraints and a required system update (which was detailed on an instruction sheet shipped with every copy) kept the launch from being called perfect, and now apparently there are reports from the Japanese gaming public that some Wiis are having trouble reading the game.
Nintendo responded to this latest concern by stating that Brawl is the first Wii game to come on a dual-layered DVD, and is more prone to read errors from dirty laser lenses than normal game discs. They have offered to clean any affected Wiis free of charge. In the meantime, quit blowing into the disc slot! Just because the Wii plays NES games doesn't mean it's an NES.

Nice one, reminds me of cartridge gaming. Cigarrete smoke and dust can kill the inside of games.

It's not dust or smoke. Cleaning it yourself doesn't work. It's because there is a hardware problem with release or soon there after wii's. Nintendo doesn't want you to know. When they are "cleaning" your wii they are actually re-calibrating or replacing your lens. Ask customer service what they are doing to make sure it doesn't happen again. They will laugh and say it shouldn't happen again. Ask them why? They can't tell you. When you hound them enough they just say There is a year warrantee and if it happens again I am sure Nintendo can work with you to have it fixed again. Well guess what guys... Release date wii's are already out of warrantee. But your still fixing it cause you know you fucked up.

I think my GPU is fried. GCN work well but in RE4 there are many artifacts. I might as well send it in before Brawl comes.

I have the same problem with RE4. That game just doesn't look good on a HD set.

You know I have been wondering how to clean the lens. We have an ultrasonic humidifier that leaves a fine dust on everything and I bet some of it is getting in the Wii.

Now they're gonna delay it again in the USA and everywhere else so they can "Fix the errors that occurred in the Jap game"...

I wouldn't understand how the lens would get dusty unless you're cramming dusty discs up in there
And that can be alleviated by leaving them in their boxes
On another note, Brawl apparently needed more than 4.5 GB of space. That's good news. The one improvement from GC to Wii that is most underrused is the fact that you have about 7x as much disc space to work with

Well, if you're a heavy smoker, your lens will get dirty quick. With the Gamecube and the Dreamcast, you could easily wipe the lens clean and it was good as new. It was a much sturdier and easier to maintain design. So they say they'll clean it for free? Will they reimburse the money you spend shipping it to them? How about the inconvenience of not having you're console for a few weeks? Oh, and Brawl didn't need more than 4.5GB of space. Early reports confirm that pretty much all of the extra space is just padding/dummy files. The use of a dual layered disc seems to be Nintendo's latest effort to squash modding and piracy, and appearantly at the expense of the performance of Wiis owned by their non pirating customers. This will likely not be fixed by the time this game reaches stateside as it is likely just a consequence of using a dual layered dvd disc. I can't blame them for wanting to squash piracy, but this is just a poor move on Nintendo's part considering how finnicky the Wii seems to be with dual layered discs. As for size restraints in the future, there's always the option of multi disc games (obviously not a first). Any word on how to clean it yourself or on a cleaning disc that works with the Wii?

Some people are just to lazy to keep their house clean....So I'd presume over time a little dust gets in every so often till eventually it does get to a stage where it can't read the disc?

Blowing in your NES == bad idea. Doing that rusted the contacts inside my NES and I had to have it professionally repaired. (This was years ago.)

I had the same problem, I rented two copies of "Brawl" at Blockbuster and neither of them worked. So I went to my local electronics store and bought a Memorex DVD cleaner for $10 ... it has tiny super soft bristles. I stuck it into the Wii 3 times turning the power off after each insertion. After that "Brawl" worked fine!
