What if Super Mario Galaxy was on the SNES?

While we really enjoyed seeing
Super Mario Bros. on the Atari, the 2600 doesn't have nearly as much charm as the SNES. So, why not envision something more modern, like
Super Mario Galaxy, on one of Nintendo's most beloved consoles? Why not, indeed.
As fans of
Super Mario Galaxy, we really enjoyed this SNES-make of the game from
Techeblog -- so much so, that we wish this hack was actually playable. As a bonus, the video uses a great remixed version of the power-up music from
Mario 64 (and beyond).
We're enjoying this trend of making Mario games retro (or, in the case of
Super Mario Bros., more retro), and hopefully this won't be the last of these hacks.

I totally agree, this looks like shit. I value the effort the guy went through, but it's still a crappy Newgrounds video and NOTHING like what the game would look like on the SNES. Not saying I could do better, but I wouldn't dare call something like this a SNES version of Mario Galaxy. Pablo Belmonte, on the other hand, made an awesome recreation of Galaxy on the DS, which was made public before Galaxy even came out. THAT was cool, this is not.
There are so many things which are wrong. For a start, even though the SNES can do scaling and rotation, there's no way in hell those two features would be as overused as in the video. There would be tiles here and there (not a single tile-based structure in that video), one (if any) layer of parallax scrolling in the background and no flying in or out of the screen; gameplay would be 2D, not 3D.
I would also complain on the music, but making a video is hard enough to start worrying about making a SPC700-complaint audio clip.

Something about this one doesn't look very good. I can't quite put my finger on it.
It does remind me of how awesome Mario Galaxy is, though. :P

I liked all the assets he used from different games... Stuff from both Mario Worlds, Petey Piranha from maybe a Mario & Luigi game (I can't remember), and even the space station from Metroid Fusion.

Nice idea, but fuck, doesn't anybody care about consistancy?
There are sprites from the GBA Metroid and Kirby games, that just completely messes the whole thing up in retrospect of it's point.

Why are the blue stars so crappy looking? I could do better than that in MS paint in like five minutes. Other that, great video.
I like how it doesn't mention the SuperFX chip, but shows effects that would clearly require it.

At 00:31 on the far left side of the screen there is a pixel which is the exact same color as the heel of Samus' left boot in Metroid Fusion. This really ruins the entire video for me. I know it cost me nothing but a minute of my time to watch this gentleman's artwork and that nobody forced me to watch it, but I still feel like my rights as a gamer and a human being have been violated by this blasphemy.

Too funny :)
I wish somebody would make this...hell, I'd buy it in a second on Wiiware. But we all know that'll never happen, but who knows, pc hackers do weirder stuff all the time and release it for free.

I don't get all of the negative comments. This isn't a real game, so even if it reuses pixels from previous games, it is still awesome.

I don't know about everybody else, but I wasn't being sarcastic when I said I liked seeing the stuff from other games. I thought it was fun trying to pick things out.

2D sequences from SMG doesn't really translate into SMW. I mean relatively compared to the regular 3D of SMG.

It's like somebody singing the National Anthem in German, something just is lost in translation. It might work , but just like 00T in 2d it just loses its soul and just FEEL WRONG even if IT COULD WORK, why force the square peg in the circle hole.

Anyone remember the final boss fight in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island? It was a lot like that, with Yoshi running around the moon. Except I remember it being terribly disorienting too. Still one of my favorite Boss fights from back in the SNES days.
