The last GDC edition of the 1UP Yours podcast reveals a vaguely depressing tidbit about Super Smash Bros. Brawl. How depressing it is depends on your outlook. Shane Bettenhausen reported that during a lunch meeting with Reggie Fils-Aime, he said that Nintendo is planning to release Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the fall.Specifically, the discussion was framed in terms of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii. The reason given that those two games are being released in Europe first is that "they don't get Smash Bros. until fall." The part about Reggie starts at about the 37 minute mark. It's worth a listen in general for some (secondhand reports of) surprisingly strong anti-Xbox posturing from Reggie.
Why do we say that this is potentially not very depressing? Because fall of this year is still this year, and that's pretty good for Nintendo of Europe.

I'm not sure I care. Is Smash Bros really that big in Europe? I've never really been bothered about it. I'm looking forward to Mario Kart a hell of a lot more.

Wow. WOW.
What to say.
We Europeans were always treated shabbily by Nintendo, but this...wow.
If Sega was still around we wouldn't have to put up with this.
Or maybe it's just a rumour. I hope so.

I'd swap my Smash Bros: Brawl for their MarioKart Wii any day of the week, they should think themselves lucky IMO as I'm guessing we could have the same wait for the true Wii daddy, MarioKart :-(

I'm 100% depressed.
That's all there is to it.
Here's me hoping that I'd finish my sixth year of school, and just before going into a 'Games Technology' course in Uni I would get to spend my time playing my most awaited game ever for the whole holiday.
Jesus. This is seriously awful news.
I ain't certain about it but Mario Kart better be good.

You know, something doesn't make sense here... If they're releasing TWO games in Europe before anywhere else here... Why is Brawl taking so long... Scrap that, why does ANY first party game take so long?
Think about it, Nintendo keeps blaming translation, marketing and most likely the Loch Ness monster for delays on EU titles. However, they're still able to dish out two AAA titles early for Europe. If you consider Mario Strikers Charged to be a AAA title, that's another one to chalk up for us.
So what's the hold up with normal game releases, what's the hold up with Brawl? Nintendo Europe, I think we need a talk...

If you want I could walk down the road to the River Ness and challenge the Monster to a game of Melee?
He's pretty cheeky like.
Hence deciding when Nintendo release future games in Europe.

*laughs* I guess not many Europeans on this site give a damn about Brawl, so it doesn't really matter I guess. I'm (hopefully) gettin it on March 9, so w/e.

It so happens that this reminds me exactly why my Wii is now considered my second console, with my newcomer PS3 currently stealing the show with plentiful releases, even in the Netherlands.
Nintendo does like to screw us over, damnit. I wasn't personally that stoked for Brawl, but I have a friend who got really excited about the last 'confirmed' release date. He won't be happy, heh.

Hmmmm.... these are pretty bad news for the people living over at Europe. I feel sorry for them (except for France) and I know their desperation. It's sad they won't resist the flood of SSBB spoilers that will be on the Internet, and will end up seeing them in the end because of this.
But hey, at least you'll have the game this year and besides, Australia has yet to have a launch date for SSBB so not everything is bad for you guys. But wow, to wait 7 months instead of 4...

i ended up spoiling it and searching for everything - minus the end right enough, that's too special - due to getting so excited one night.
i really am getting a bit upset with nintendo about this release date.
maybe alot of europeans don't really care after all, but i definately do :(
.. and i don't see why they don't ;)

So much for actually playing this game with my friends before going to university and possibly never seeing them again.
Fuck you, Nintendo. Brawl > Mario Kart, IMO. For one, the former game is ACTUALLY FINISHED in some form.

Eh, earlier Mario Kart is a fair trade
Honestly, i think they'll do the same thing to America for Mario Kart Wii, its distressing to see Europe and Japan get dates DURING an American gaming event, and not a peep for America
They don't want to crowd the First-party calendar, which is understandable, but gamers are an impatient lot (myself included)

Man, this is depressing. I was hoping i'd be Brawling around June with my friend over Wi-Fi.
Well.. i probably wouldn't have enough money for it anyway after buying No More Heroes on March 7th (with fucking black pixie-dust instead of blood, but the game got good reviews and it looks damn good nonetheless so i'll buy it anyway to expand my Wii games collection and actually have some fun on my Wii for a change ((i'm tired of playing Zelda and Wii Sport)) ).

They should really stop translating the games into german/french/whatever. If you don't know english you have no place in modern western society and that's that.
I'm aware that translation isn't the only timesink but it's one we can easily do without. Here in scandinavia we get all our games (except kids games) in english and that's fine because we all know english.
Personally I'm thinking about modding my Wii so I can play NTSC games, because these delays (and our version of No More Heroes being censored) are really starting to piss me off. I already buy the american version of all DS games so I could might as well start doing that for the Wii games too.

seriously, why don't europeans (or at least the english-speaking ones) just import all of the american versions of wiis and games? it's all about how much your time is worth, i personally would be glad to pay extra just to be able to play brawl months ahead of time in a language i understand, over the summer no less!

Because it's a pain in the arse. Also, shipping stuff international can be an expensive nightmare, and most people don't have the appropriate power transformers.
There's three reasons. Want more?

RosuNamikaze said...
not just that.
i've obviously considered just getting a japanese one, i'm all about the importing, but can you really see me buying anything at the moment while i'm in debt £900?
i take it you're getting it on the 9th and therefore don't have a problem with it?
luck you.

MKW is a bit early...as is WF...just a bit...not half a year...If I didn't already have the game I'd be kicking, screaming & starting an online protest! But I do have it so I don't care :P
But hey we EUs are used to it, our arse well loose by now...we hardly feel a thing....SSBB is just a bit bigger than normal...
