With the "Twilight Hack" now available to the public and enabling users to run unsigned code on their Wiis, basement programmers are wasting no time in releasing their unofficial software to the incipient homebrew community. After all, they've waited over a year since the Wii's launch for this opportunity. Here's a list of homebrew developments from just today.
- How To Get Homebrew Working on the Wii
Tutorial on what you'll need and how to run homebrew software - Linux for Wii
A "small usbgecko-enabled proof of concept mini-distro" - MP3 Player
Get your MP3 of "Poison" ready - DOL to Elf Converter
Convert and run GameCube homebrew in Wii mode - SNES9xGx.wii 0.01b Emulator
Keep it legal and homebrew, kids

As I posted on joystiq, the snes bit isn't related to Twilight princess. It was a 2007 effort that someone mistakenly bumped, and someone else mistakenly thought was new.
scroll down in the original thread (not the front page post) to see it: http://www.tehskeen.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4369

If you'll check the link, one of the people did it, tried it, and got a menu, but it there's no controller functionality. They were uncertain if they were actually running it in gc mode or Wii mode though.
Either way, this is not a recent development, and isn't related to the twilight princess hack. Saying it could be reworked into a TP solution can be said about every GC project. This one just hasn't had any of the work done yet. tehksheen screwed up and posted a 8 month old project as if it were new.

Someone suggested that this could be used to finally secure DVD-playback, as well.
I liked that idea

That would be cool...although not very practical if it required you to crash your Wii every time you wanted to play a movie!

I tried going to the first site ("How To Get Homebrew Working on the Wii"), but it wouldn't load for me.
I would love to try this for myself, but I have one very important question:
Are there any lasting / damaging effects to doing this?

Long Response: I'm sure one of the informative articles helpfully linked above will answer your question.
Short Response: RTFA!

The reason I was asking was because, as stated in my comment, the "How To Get Homebrew Working on the Wii" wouldn't load for me.
Thus, I cannot get my answer from the informative article I would like to get it from.

Oh... well that's different.
Since I don't seem to have any problems getting to the article you mention, I'll tell you: Only a Wii, a Gamecube SD Card Adapter, and SD Card, and a "working" copy of Zelda:TP are necessary. There are specific codes listed so as to identify "working" copies of Zelda:TP.
So, no hardware modding necessary, and I don't see how it could have any lasting adverse effects (other than lack of sleep due to playing around with homebrew stuff...)

Looks like Joystiq just killed their puny servers with the linkage. It'll be awhile before I can even attempt to try these out.

I want the ability to play TGCD games off their original discs!! Hopefully there are enough homebrewers out there with collections they want to unleash on their Wiis.

Who wants to bet that this new update is only to "FIX" this exploit.

It's hard to figure how they could fix the exploit without disabling Twilight Princess.
