If you're anything like this blogger, you might actually enjoy Mario Kart's "Battle" mode more than the racing itself. Whether that's how you roll or not, though, you'll still probably find the above picture enticing.
Why, you ask? Well, for the fact that shows us an 8-player Battle mode! (Count the players in the bottom-right map.)
Sure, you'll have to type and not talk trash to the friends you're playing with, but when it comes to Battle mode, the more the merrier. While it may not support 12 players, eight is more than enough to keep us on our toes while we try to hang on to our precious balloons.
Mario Kart battles will support eight

April seems like a pretty good guess considering Japan and Europe are getting it on April 10 and April 11. I can't imagine the US getting too much later.

Eight player battle sounds great. I think twelve players would be too much for battle mode.
I cannot wait for this game to come out!

How the hell are we supposed to type and play at the same time!?!
Last time I checked, I only have two hands, and they will be preoccupied with the steering wheel.
*goes off to practice typing with his toes*

There's no in-game text chat. It's just in the game lobbies while you're waiting.

8 player Battle is great news, though I still think this game looks horrible graphically, compared to Mario Galaxy

Yeah, I don't think that header shot is a good one to go by either.
It'll still sell though, because, you know, "Wii owners don't care about graphics".

I care about graphics.....Mainly because most Wii games are shoddy ps2 ports.....

From that picture... I'm HOPING that the large expansive battle grounds are back. I LOVED the battle grounds in Mario Kart 64, especially the Block Fort - Double Dash's courses were so tiny, they felt barely one quarter the size. Bring back the large battle-tracks!

On Joystiq someone commented it just shows the MINIMUM not necessarily maximum battlers though likely.
