Every once and a while, we get a complaint about using the word "waggle" to describe motion controls. Here's the thing, though: we like that word. Sure, it can have a negative connotation (and we've used it in that way before, too), but we don't think it has to. In fact, when we hear it in a non-negative setting, it often manages to invoke a feeling of affection from us toward our Wiis -- not to mention, it's much more fun than using the term "motion controls" over and over. What about you, though? Do you think that "waggle" is a bad word despite the context it's used in?

I insist that you start calling it "super-mega-awesome-motion-blast controls" or I'm deleting my subscription to your RSS feed.
Thank you and good day.

No, I must say I really dislike it. When I hear "waggle" I think: crass, tacky, gimmicky, etc.

When I hear waggle, it just sounds too simple.
But it might be accurate. A lot of games might not really offer too much motion control, but treat the "controller shake" as a button unto itself.
Waggle sounds cheap and boring. But some Wii games really are cheap and boring.
(Obviously, some Wii games are truly great. I'm not a hater.)

I have to admit, I kind of like the word itself. It has a nice ring to it.
Also, Tim, we're not brainstorming. We're just talking about a word. Just chillllll out.

Waggle sounds both gimmicky and yet still quite fitting....
I've grown fond of it....
I mean Waggle Vs Wiimote w*nking......Waggle just sounds so much better....
Waggle....it's short, and to the point.
"tacked on waggle"
"some great added waggle"
"tacked on motion controls"
"Some great motion controls"
I'll go with waggle(I've mentioned waggle a lot here).

To me, waggle implies tacked-on, gimmicky, inaccurate, and useless controls in which it's better to flail your arms than use specific motions. While that DOES describe some Wii games, it doesn't speak to the Wii control system as a whole. Waggle in MP3:C and you quickly die; waggle in Tiger Woods and you are chipping into the sand everytime.
I'd rather see "motion control", as in, a port of Game X "now with motion control!" Even "movement", "action", or "gesture" would be better than waggle.

This is how I feel. Some Wii games have real waggle controls - like Wario and Raving Rabbids. But the word "waggle" doesn't accurately convey the kind of more precision controls that many Wii games have. I don't considered shooters or even games like Wii Sports to have much waggle control. For the most part, they require certain movements, not random wagging.

The only way things lose their negative connotations is by using them in other ways. I like the use of waggle to describe wiimote movement. keep it up!

Waggle is just like gimmick, or casual, or hardcore. Terms that had no special connotation before Wii came around and the internet gave them such
Waggle = dumbed down Wii controls
Gimmick = Wii & everything for it
Casual= Wii gamers & games
Hardcore = Real games for real consoles played by real gamers
The above idiocy is fuel for the majority of console war flame matches. They really don't have any true meaning, but this is the gamer's lexicon for the 7th generation
Personally, i don't really care. They're just words.

I don't mind the use of "waggle" and have used it myself on a few occasions. I think the negative connotation that it receives comes more from the crappy motion control-based shovelware that is being produced for the Wii right now. Not from the word itself. The two just happen to be paired together often, so it comes off bad on the word.

I like how people like Mr. Khan and Hame come to wiifanboy and dis wii fans. You guys are stupid spending your time to seek out people to insult. It is an indicator that your not happy with yourselves. Maybe you should stop being so "hardcore" and get a life. If you ever got any, I doubt you'd need to come to wiifanboy to vent your frustrations with yourself!

I don't know were you get that Mr. Khan is seeking out Wii fans to disrespect if you go visit his profile he is a regular on this site and an avid fan of the Wii. Also if you read closely to the post that Mr. Khan made that he is in no way showing any disrespect to the Wii or its fans but in fact disrespecting the people who use those terms (such as hardcore).

How on earth are we dissing Wii fans? We are Wii fans! And we've been "coming to Wii Fanboy" a lot longer than you have. Christ, I didn't think I would be attacked so vehemently for saying I don't like the word "waggle" in a discussion which basically asks "do you like the word waggle or not?" So because I don't like a word I'm "stupid" and "not happy with myself"? Jesus Christ! Some fanboys are worryingly deluded. Stop being such a pussy.
And anyway it's because I'm a Wii fan that I don't like the word waggle and Christ I don't even feel that strongly about it!

Personally as long as I know the point that is trying to be given then I am happy with what ever the word is. I do agree with some that the only motion used by the wiimote in many games is nothing more than a little shake up and down or side to side while some games use nothing but full out motions that can even get the blood flowing to more than just your fingers. I would like to see when reviewing a game that a little more definition be used to described the extent of the motion used in the course of a game such as if a game only uses a flick of the wrist or if it has a full range of motion. But everyone here has their own opinion on what they like and don't like and this just happens to be mine.

I apologize Hame as you did not dis in these posts, I just remember you having some nasty things to say about casual gamers in another. That is the reason your name was brought into this. If I have taken Mr Khan's wording incorrectly I also apologize, as I understood he was saying what those words meant to him. But as I read it now I see that he was clear that the internet had made an association with the words like that, not he himself, apologies all around.

That's ok. Thanks for your apology. I apologize for anything I said. As for "having some nasty things to say about casual gamers," yes I realise I have been a bit harsh on them in the past and didn't really stop to think that it might upset people. I was just upset myself because I was worried about Nintendo's creative direction and thought the whole casual thing was getting out of hand (I was actually one of the main champions of the casual gamers pre-E3 2007), but yeah, I'm really sorry. Friends? :-)

I am of the opinion, like others, that "waggle" implies lazy use of the motion controls. It makes me think of someone, well, waggling the remote... moving it around with no precision or purpose... just "move the remote some way" for sake of calling them motion controls. Not that it's always a bad thing, mind you (Twilight Princess has what I'd call waggle instead of another button, but it doesn't detract from the game... and you could, I suppose, mimic sword-swinging movements if you wanted), but more often it's a cheap excuse to say a game has motion controls.

Typically when I hear waggle, it implies that the developers didn't take the time to implement appropriate motion controls and instead opted for a simple "waggle" or shaking of the remote for input.

Whoever drew that dog must have never seen one in real life. Why is its tail coming out of its groin?
As for "Waggle" please take an English class and learn about the concept of "context clues" to give an idea of the meaning of a word.
If I say, "Once again, the tacked on waggle doesn't add much to the game." it is obviously a negative meaning.
However, if I say, "The cleverly designed waggle used for combat is delightsome and responsive!" it obviously is a positive meaning.
Although, I must admit in typing up those two examples it was much easier to use the word with a negative connotation than to come up with an example sentence for a positive connotation.
