Wii Warm Up: How badly do you want another guitar?
Unfortunately, however, the price of the Les Paul is a whopping $69.99. Keep in mind, that's the official price listed at Red Octane's site.
After some searching, the only place we came across a standalone Les Paul was Toys "R" Us, which is selling the guitar for ten dollars less than Red Octane. Of course, that's before the $9 shipping and handling fees, meaning that there's probably no way out of a $69 price for the official guitar.
If you want to go third party, you can wait for Nyko's option (Amazon lists the item at $49.99, to be released on March 15th, although Nyko's website says May). There's also CTA's Shred Axe, but we have no idea when that's coming out or what it will cost.
So, when it comes to getting another Guitar Hero III controller, how much is too much?

As an admitted Guitar Hero noob, I am in no rush to spend $70 on a second guitar. As it is, I only purchased GH3 recently when Toys'R'Us had the game AND guitar on sale for $70.
The $50 price point is too high for me, but I doubt it will impede sales to the truly dedicated GH gamer. If not for Smash Bros on the horizon, I probably would plunk down $50 for a 2nd guitar as GH is currently the hit game in my house right now.
Most likely I will wait until there is a new GH game WITH controller, or wait until the game is so prevalent that I can easily pick up a controller for around $25. I am a patient*, frugal*, time-taxed* gamer after all.
*these terms and conditions to not apply to anything pertaining to Smash Bros.

Saw tons of them yesterday at the gamestop and EB around here, but my jaw dropped at the price, so now I'm waiting for the cheap knock-off version.

Ugh, SOOO overpriced. The Wii guitar uses the Wiimote for; power, wireless connectivity, and motion control, so there is hardly any tech in that thing and they charge 70?? I bet it costs them 10 bucks to make.
Activision is really running their franchises into the ground, without Harmonix the Guitar Hero name is mearly a worthless, soulless, brandname.
Thank god for Rockband.

I'm in no rush. If I do decide to get a new guitar, I might just wait for Guitar Hero IV, which will likely be out by October.
Currently, Guitar Hero III with a controller is only $89. I think if a lot of people had known it'd be this expensive, they'd have just bought another bundle months ago. :P

Too much money. I think I'll just take the $132 refund and quit Guitar Hero for a while. Rock Band is a much better deal. I don't want to have to buy a new GH game every 6 months for new songs. I'll use the money to gets me an mp3 player or a new DS (RIP Polar White DS Lite).

I sent Red Octane an email this morning telling them how mad I was at the crazy price that they are asking when it is just a shell. This is the same price as the PS3 guitar.
I suggest that everyone email Red Octane support and compain as well. If they get enough complaints then they may consider lowering the price of the guitar. If they do not, I will be buying the Nyko guitar instead.

HOLY &^*&^*! So they are telling us that GH3 is only worth $20? Yeah right. The guitar is only a shell, and at the normal retail price of a game of $50, the guitar should only retail for $40.
Before Rock Band was announced, I did want another guitar. But even if RB wasn't announced, there is no way I'd pay 70 freaking dollars for a plastic shell!

i agree with matt on this one, i had imagined if any of the guitars were to come stand alone, they would cost whatever the bundle would cost, minus the game (so for wii, 50 bucks less, and ps3/360, 60 bucks less) which would be 40 for all consoles. but 70 dollars? thats ridiculous, IF i'm gonna buy another guitar for my wii, i'm gonna uy another bundle, and just sell off the game to someone else.
i will be sending a complaint email as well later today

If it were 40 bucks, I'd pick one up. Now, I'm just going to wait for Rock Band. 70 bucks is scream-out-loud ridiculous! I'm not going to send an angry email, I'm just going to save up for Rock Band.

I bought two bundles when GH3 came out, so it looks like it only cost me $20 dollars for four months of rocking out with a friend. I'm definetely glad I got both of them now.

I picked up two bundles awhile back - really glad I didn't wait. Then when GH4 comes out I should be able to sell 1 copy of the gh3 disc for $20-$30.

We just got 15 of the wii controllers in at best buy today. No others. And no release date. So they're stacked in the warehouse. They're in a box that looks alot like Guitar Hero III's, but it's yellow instead of orange/red, and it has a huge pick of the guitar on the front.

That's ridiculous. I've always wanted to get guitar hero but the pricetag is twice that of a normal game. Yes, it comes with a controller. Whoop-de-fucking-do. The controller is ONLY useful in guitar hero, and on top of that it's more expensive than the controllers that work with every other game, AND you need the normal controller to use it? These pieces of plastic shouldn't cost any more than the nunchuck.

$40 is the most I'll pay. It was $90 for game and guitar. I assume the game $50, guitar $40. They're just monopolyzing at this point. I have been waiting anxiously for another guitar, but $70? That's robbery!

I'd pay $30 for a guitar shell and no more. Activision is ridiculous. I'll just wait for the GH4. Multiplayer ain't all that.
Anyone know if it's possible for Activision to block usage of a Wii Rock Band guitar, given that the guitar functionality is really all in the Wiimote?

No, I doubt they'll be able to block it. The guitar just shows up as a classic controller (since that's all it pretty much is- classic controller guts in a guitar shell). The Rock Band one should work with the GH3 one, and vice versa. If it doesn't that's really crappy.

Can't really feel any sympathy for people moaning about paying $70 for GH3, it cost me £70 here in rip off Britain. I'm guessing that means an extra guitar will be £50-£60

I didn't think about it until I read it in his comments, but Rick is right - the controller for Wii is a shell to go over the Wii remote, which is the truly functioning device. So for me, anything over $50 shipped isn't that appealing.
I may just wait until the next GH game comes out and pick up a guitar with that game. Unless it's the all-Aerosmith game. Meh.

The high price point is really unappealing for something that is little more than a piece of plastic. But, I think that the price will fall pretty quickly. They probably put it out at this price just to test the waters. Once they realize that nobody is buying it, the price will drop.

So I'm putting my $40 Nintendo Wii controller that does all the work (and works for all my other Wii games) inside of a larger $70 controller that pretty much does nothing (and only works for GH)... WTF. Please for the love of Jebus don't buy that over-priced hunk-a-junk.
No DLC and over-priced guitar = switch to Rock Band.
Everyone just needs to pack up their game and send it back to Activision for the buyback. I just bought Rock Band and I can say that it makes all others (GH1,GH2,GH80'S,AND GH3) seem boring now. Even Rock Band on the PS2 is a blast.

It's called supply and demand people. Right now, Red Octane is the only company selling Wii Guitars. Therefore, they can charge whatever they want for them. There's no competition so if consumers want one they have no choice but to fork over the $70. If demand is reduced by the high price or by the release of Nyko's alternative then it would be advisable for Red Octane to lower the price.
I bought one at Gamestop on Friday. It's pricey but like I said, it's the only option. Also, 3rd party controllers tend to be slightly lower quality than the official equipment.

I've scanned most the Guitar Hero boards and pretty much everyone is crying foul on this one. The PS3 guitar being 60 - 70 dollars...umm ok I guess but seeing that the wii-mote is the guts of the "Wii-tar" it makes no sense to be that expensive. I get supply and demand but they also have to provide a good price point on the product. Since Activison has offered the buy-back you'd figure that that they'd do everything they could to keep the Wii fans happy (to prevent everyone from sending it back). Unless it gets "slashed" down to around 40 bucks I can't see too many of these things getting sold.
