Games publisher THQ announced today that they're adding yet another Wii game to their repertoire (how many is this now?). The subject of the game is, oddly enough, cheerleading, making it the first of its kind.Unless you're a six-year-old girl, All Star Cheer Squad sounds pretty terrifying -- there's really no other way to describe "squad competitions and one-on-one cheer-offs." The game will also utilize the Balance Board, making it only the third confirmed Wii game to make use of the peripheral.
In case you're wondering what a cheerleading game might entail, it's probably what you'd expect: you learn cheers, make up a few of your own, practice them, and then perform.
So, tell us, readers: how funky is your chicken?
[Thanks, John!]

Haha, good point.
That's a different, less sinister kind of cheerleading, though ;).

Well, the mechanics of the game actually sound fascinating (OSU!), but I'm afraid that the cheerleading angle might have been bread from trying too hard to target this "new 'girl gamer' market" we've heard so much about, and heck... I have to admit my masculinity, what little of it I have, wouldn't allow me to play a game about cheerleading camp for all the fantastic gameplay in the world (Osu?)
Plus, I fear the "unique storyline" will probably include the sorts of stereotypes we've seen applied to cheerleaders for years in the media, with all of one's rivals being backstabbing, conniving, terrible excuses for human beings (though if the target audience is young enough, we can at least cross "slutty" off the list). Unless the target age is low enough to warrant an "everyone is really just best friends" sort of story, but that wouldn't give me much hopes for good gameplay anyway (which is the vital component many companies often forget when targetting the "girl gamer" market) (...osu...).

“With the explosive growth of the girls gaming market in recent years due to the continued success of Wii and DS, our ongoing goal is to stay at the cutting edge of that success by bringing a brand new property for this segment to these popular systems,” said Jim Huntley, director of global brand management, THQ.

THQ still gets the love for trying hard and brining out a lot of games...but maybe if they focused all their efforts on say just 3 new Wii games, they'd be AAA instead of a B-...maybe with the exception of De Blob.
And is it only me that enjoys 16 year old girls dancing and jiggling in short skirts? Oh and 16 is totally within the law where I come from ;)
