We've already seen Paper Mario transform Mario's world from 2D to 3D, but we like this picture that does it old-school style. It's also interesting to see Super Mario Bros. through a first-person perspective.
Our favorite thing about this picture is that Mario can see the scoreboard floating in the sky on the left. Also, he seems to have a nice view of the sun setting while he's running around saving princesses.
If you like this picture and want to see some more first-person Mario, you might also want to check out Techeblog's Doom/Mario mash-up. The poor goombas -- they never stood a chance, really.
[Update: The picture now links to a wallpaper sized version -- just click on it. Thanks, Jeff!]

Cool pic and neat idea, but wouldn't the Goombas be flat and/or Mario would be looking at their side? They move sideways in the game and face the player.

He has to be heading towards the sunrise, since all the worlds of the original game were oriented from left to right

I'd love to play a mario game with this perspective! I love the flat colours with the lighting effects.

Sorry guys,
I didn't realize it was old or a wallpaper, because the place I found this picture from (Techeblog) doesn't link it to anything. I had assumed it was just a fan creation sent into Techeblog. I've been looking around and haven't found anything, but if I manage to dig up the wallpaper, I'll update the post.
