The first thing that needs to be said is that this game is huge. It has a competent single-player experience as well as some modern additions to the multiplayer formula of old. That said, it's a mixed bag, combining the best of the old, along with some new. But not everything is roses.
The Subspace Emissary, the game's big single-player campaign, is one of the first things you'll want to dive into. As a primary means of unlocking characters (and padding out the game a bit), it's about a 6 hour affair that liberally douses the player in poor platforming and monotonous combat scenarios that are incredibly easy. It may be cool to have all of the Nintendo characters duke it out in one epic conflict, melding together franchises that really have no business being together (although, it's pretty cool to see Link and Yoshi teamed up, along with many others), but in the end The Subspace Emissary provides more chore and bore than the fun galore Smash Bros. is known for. This portion of the game best serves as a means to unlock characters and give those without friends (or an internet connection) something to do.
But, honestly, who really buys this game for The Subspace Emissary? It's all about the multiplayer action and the fan service roster. And, as one would imagine, the game delivers the best multiplayer action on the console (and then some).
Before I get to the gameplay, however, the controls warrant discussion. The 4 available control schemes (Wiimote alone, Wiimote and nunchuk, Classic controller and the GameCube controller) offer a variety of choices to the brawler, but, for me, the GameCube controller is the best available option. The Wiimote alone is suitable, but with the throw button being assigned to the - button, it's hard to pull that off in battle. And, when using the Wiimote alone, the block is delegated to the B trigger, making it hard to access in the heat of battle. As for the Wiimote and nunchuk, I've found a few issues. For one, you have to turn the ability to jump by pushing up on the nunchuk's analog stick off, or else you'll accidentally start jumping when you mean to do something else. Also, the lack of ridges on the face of the analog stick on the nunchuk caused my thumb to slip constantly, becoming quite the nuisance when fighting off three foes (especially on the smaller stages like Smashville). As for the Classic controller, it feels better than the Wiimote and nunchuk, but the analog stick is the same as the nunchuk's. So I would suggest using the GameCube controller. Your mileage may vary, however.
Now that we've gotten my problems with the control schemes that aren't a GameCube controller out of the way, let's get down to gameplay. Many have commented that the game feels slower than Melee and that a lot of the characters have been nerfed or altered. While I felt this same way immediately, after dumping many hours into the game and going back to the GameCube game, I didn't really feel like it was tuned down that much. That isn't to say there aren't balance issues, however.
Some characters, like Bowser, are just too ridiculously powerful. There are certain smash attacks that deal too much damage (Ike's side smash, Bowser's side smash for two hits and, still, Link's stupid down thrust from the air). These can deal upwards of 50% per hit and, for most combatants, that's half their life, if not more (Pikachu and Kirby get tossed really easily). Some things, however, have been tuned down for the better, like Samus's charged shot and Fox's laser beam (it no longer traps you like it did in Melee). Overall, though, there is an amazing balance between the fighters that means not one single character is usually favored over others in 4-player conflicts. That is, unless you're Snake, in which case everyone in the game is favored against you. Seriously, Snake's attacks take way too long to execute and leave him open the entire match. Sad, we know. It's time we addressed the biggest problem in the game: Wi-Fi play. While online play was smooth when I played the game with Joystiq's Kyle Orland, now that the public has it, every 4-player match is filled with nothing but lag. It's really bad, actually, and keeps the fun local. Unless you have some friends for multiplayer in your house, don't expect to enjoy non-CPU competition on any kind of consistent basis.
Should Nintendo figure out what the issues with the online play are, Smash Bros. Brawl will have hopefully paved the way for future releases on the Wii to utilize, if not expand, the Wi-Fi features within it. It has status tracking for your friends, has a good lobby system for keeping the action rolling along (not kicking you out of the room after every match is such a good design choice) and allows users to share their own content. These are the steps Nintendo needs to take with future releases so that they aren't the laughing stock of the online console community.
Finally, I feel I need to mention the game's graphics. They never played a huge part in previous installments and they don't so much here, but the addition of the Final Smash sequences, as well as the increase in detail to each character model and stage, really make this a great looking game. Add in the great cutscenes from The Subspace Emissary and you have one very nice visual package. The 16:9 support on 480p is a visual treat.
Aside from the often boring Subspace Emissary and the buggy online play, there isn't much you can fault this game with. It has countless trophies and other collectibles to unlock, a wealth of information on past Nintendo franchises, trials of Virtual Console games, tons of characters to play as (uh, Sonic dude) and an incredible amount of replay value. This is going to be the best game on the Wii this year, if not during the console's lifespan (seriously, what other game can match the scope of Brawl?). Smash Bros. Brawl is every Nintendo fanboy and fangirl's dream come true. The only way it could be better was if it included Mega Man as a playable character.
Final Score: 9.5/10

yeah, sorry but this review was pretty poor.. hah.
i may be biased and have geared myself up for the biggest wii game yet, but you pretty much said the graphics were the only good thing in it there.
plus, what difficulty was it that you did the subspace on?
i thought there was an 'intense' mode, which is surely a challenge.
this review made the game sound pretty awful in my opinion :S
sorry.

Well, I appreciate the comments, but you did see I gave it a 9.5, right? Most of what I said was good were things that every single person on this planet knew about the game. How it plays. Who's in it. The merits of multiplayer. Like, I didn't realize I needed to spell all of these out for an audience that knew everything about the game going in and mainly wanted the scoop on what had been changed.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't, I guess.

I loved everything about the game that made it Smash Bros. It's not like the formula had been altered beyond "add more characters" and "add a single-player campaign." I felt that the main things that needed focus in the review were tuning of the characters, wi-fi features, controls etc.
I love the game. I gave it a 9.5. I said it's the best game that the Wii will probably ever see.

Aww Hinkle, don't listen to them. I agree with you; everyone pretty much knows all the good things you could say about Brawl, so your space is a lot better spent talking about the issues you had. The fact that you gave it a 9.5 should be evidence enough you thought the game was amazing.
For the record, I personally don't think those particular over-powered smashes aren't as cheap as you say, only because they're all really slow. And Link's down air has super landing lag, and is easily punished if you missed. However, I will agree that there are some moves that are a bit crazy. Try Pikachu's down smash, perhaps. He obviously stole it from Melee Peach.
Anyway, great review Hinkle. I'm glad someone out here can offer honest criticism on the game without simply Brawl-bashing. Keep rockin', dude.
Also, am I the only one that doesn't have a Spectator Mode option on his copy of Brawl? My Japanese version has it, and I seem to be the only one with this problem...

Yea, I think Hinkle did the job well here. Gotta say, it's true that we all knew a lot about this game before any of us picked it up. He highlighted the downfalls because we all have an idea of what the greatness of this game is all about.
I agree with him that Snake is a little too slow for his own good, although at times I sitll see how he can win. My roommate and I were going to have a team of Sonic + Snake when we were reading pre-release info on the game, and now I use Pit, Sonic, or Rob, and he uses Marth almost exclusively. (occsaionally he still uses Snake though)
Haven't played many matches as/against Bowser, but I have to say I think Ike's moves are fine. The one you were talking about might be overpowered if I could hit anyone with it...ever...It's too slow to be called unbalanced. Although that adds to the chaos of a small stage since evading one enemy can lead you right into another, sometimes. In that respect I understand how an unskilled Ike could just keep doing it in a free for all game and wind up in second place. However generally he takes his own skilled player just as someone playing as Fox must be skilled at handling a quick and nimble character.
So while I would give the game a slightly lower score (9.0 perhaps?) and say that I still think Galaxy is a better game due to its superior level of polish and inclusion of old NES-style gaming segments (and audio), I'd definitely say it is the best iteration of Smash Bros, and far superior to everything OTHER THAN Mario Galaxy on the Wii...
Oh, and the lag is completely true. With a speedy character like Sonic lag can be a killer, and generally is, online...

I'm new to the Super Smash Bros series. I picked up Brawl just because I'm so weak minded and everyone told me this game is going to be awesome.
To be honest, I'm not really all that impressed. So far I don't really care for the controls, but I still have not tried using a GC controller yet. The single player campaign so far has left a lot to be desired, but I will eventually get through it.
So far, I can see why the hype exists for this game, but I do not agree at all that this is the end all, be all for the Wii. I mean, it's not even a good game to use with the controls that came with the system.
While I don't regret picking up the game, and maybe I'll get into it some day (Right now, I'm too engrossed in Metroid 3) I'm glad I picked up another game for cheap along with this game to justify this purchase.
Now Mario Kart Wii, now that's a game I really can't wait for and I'm sure I'm going to be spending a hell of a lot more time in the first week on that game then I probably will on Brawl for the entire time I own it.

I'mThe newbies guide to Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
I'm new to the series too. At first, I felt like you guys did - a little underwhelmed after hearing all the hype. However, a couple things really helped me start to get into the game:
First was reading the first 15 pages of the instruction manual. Learning the moves, especially how to do the different smash moves and recoveries, is a big thing. The one thing they didn't cover too well was how to recover when knocked off the side. (Use a midair jump and then press joystick up + B on Wavebird - it takes practice, but it is so important).
The second was switching to a Wavebird controller. I guess controller choice is pretty personal, but the Wavebird has more buttons so it relies less on using button combos, which makes it a bit easier for me. I would think the Classic controller would have a similar feel.
The third is just playing through the Classic mode on easy or normal with a bunch of different characters. The first time through I did not feel like I was controlling my character much. I was just mashing buttons and my victories felt almost entirely luck based. However, after reading the manual and practicing some, I now feel like I'm more in control of what the character is doing. I prefer Classic mode because usually there are just two people on screen, which is better for new people to learn than a four player Brawl mode. Four players get way too chaotic until you know what you're doing. It is also nice to just be able to go through 12 levels without going to a menu after every round.
It took about 5 hours of playtime and practice for me to really get in control of my character, and I'm still far from perfect. I think with time I will enjoy it even more. At least now I really feel how fun this game is and why it is such a big deal.

I've been having probs with playing "anyone" having the connection disconnect me every time while i wait at the character selection screen for about 15-20 seconds or so. I called Nintendo about it and they said that it was because of the fact that so many people are on, Nitnendo's servers are going wonky. I guess they werent expecting a bit turnout online ,but if they can take anything from Live, it's that people want online play.
other than this, ive had a blast with the game so far. i was one of those people who said "meh" to melee, and I have to say that this is holding my interest a lot longer. The characters are much better, and the environments are great. while the single player mode is kinda so so , it's still more than what Melee had, and I'm enjoying it so far.
One thing i must tell people. Get on IGN and go to the upload/dload portion of the site. You can upload your own stages on the site, and even dload other people's to your wii with no limit in site. this has GREATLY upped the replayability of the game, as not only can you made as many new stages as you want, but you can get other people's as well. For this one feature alone, Brawl is an amazing game that has trumped other Wii games in the online portion just because of this ability to add content.

Brawl is definitely fun and has tons in it, but as a game Super Mario Galaxy rocks my words much more. It's intense at times. It's relaxing at time. It's not over in minutes. I loved playing through the whole thing again as Luigi. Etc. It comes down to personal taste. To say that Brawl "beats Super Mario Galaxy" isn't really fair. That's like saying that the Rainbow Ranch beats marriage.

See, the thing is that I kinda enjoy CPU battles. I made a great many homemade Me vs the CPU tournaments where I draw the brackets and just go to town. Often I want up controlling a character in every battle. And it doesn't get as boring fighting the CPU as one might think. Obviously the AI is very predictable to a certain point (like how if someone got a hammer, all the CPU characters would run to one end of the stage away from the hammer guy, and then would go inert until the hammer went away, so you could smack 'em around to your pleasure), the CPU can still perform things that humans cannot (like the most perfect dodges. You simply cannot use certain moves on them, they'll dodge 95% of the time)
Its fun, not as boring as people make it to be.

Ever since I lost in the tournament, I made it my job to master the Wiimote-Nunchuk combo... after a while, it's really easy to use! :)
I'm an optimist to many things, including "overpowered attacks". Ike's Final Smash IS ridiculously strong, but he's a tad slow to some attacks, so making it have some extra 'oomph' seems reasonable to me.
Bowser? He needs all the extra strength he can get, the man's a tank that you can dance around! Fear needs to be implemented via strength.
Link's downward stab? The guy's also a tank! He can't move across the screen like a ballet dancer like most of the people can! And he's not exactly aerial material! He can't maneuver as much as the faster aerial fighters, so give him an edge and make people run for their lives! Got a problem with it?: Swerve to the side and smash him from the side, keep doing that and he'll shut his sword up.
No, you want a ridiculously powerful attack? Try jumping in the air with Sheik and kicking upwards! Now for something that can be accessed instantly, THAT's a bit much (amazing smashing ability)... though I suppose her rather weak frame can easily excuse her.
Snake? Yeah, at first I found him ridiculously slow... but if you can get around your opponent and make short jumps, you can easily lay down traps and toss grenades to smash your enemy far enough to land a combo. Also his smash-forward attack is fast enough to catch the enemy off guard (yeah it looks slow, but it's almost as if you ignore being hit until you launch the rocket launcher)... and did you really expect him to be fast? Did you see him in his game? Not exactly Sonic material. And another thing, he wasn't meant to fight head-on, if that was the case, then Metal Gear Solid wouldn't be a Stealth & Espionage game; meaning you have to always be one-step ahead of your opponent and trick them to win (which I enjoy).
As for Kirby and Pikachu being knocked around frequently... Pikachu has speed and is EXPECTED to dodge most hits. And Kirby's a puff-ball; if he wasn't knocked away easily while still having his puff-float-jump, it'd be kinda' cheap for other people.
The Subspace Emissary? Yeah... it is a bit long-winded. I woudn't say boring, just too long... just wayyy too long. Even with 2 players it's still so friggin' long.
WiFi? Dunno, mine never worked (Brawls, that is... everything else WiFi works just great)... I guess I'm lucky to have a friend over everyday?
Like I said, I'm an optimist in most things. :D

What did you expect? A strategic battle in which you took turns? Or perhaps a slowed-down version where you can actually plan what you do next without fear?
It's called "Brawl", as in "beat the crap outta' each other and prove who's the best Nintendo/3rd-company character out there", or in some other people's translations: Brawl, as in a good ol' beat-em-up with lots of unpredictables and intense action.
There's not too much it other than that.
I wouldn't see why you would get it if you don't enjoy the thrill of battle.
If you're the tactic-sort, just use an even-paced or slow-paced character and amp the item count to HIGH... not saying that'll make you like the game, just saying that's more your style.
"Button Masher" refers to the idea that you RANDOMLY press buttons. Most players in Brawl avoid that so they don't get killed.

On a positive note, I played my cousin online. I'm in the Bronx and he is in Idaho and we hardly had any lag. I was very impressed. It seemed to run faster and with less hiccups than when we played Super Mario Strikers against eachother.

I see what this review was getting at; if you are reading this site you already know the good stuff about Brawl. Here's the bad and there's quite a few flaws. But I don't really care, my roommates and I are working through SSE while having nightly tourneys. The fun factor is through the roof on this game. He may be favored, but he's far from being the ultimate. (not really an ultimate to the game)
What you're referring to is "cheap". Just like when Fox constantly dashes across the screen with either B^ or B>, never being hit but always hitting.
And if you think of it that way, you'll notice one thing: You can stop both.
To get past Pit's constant cheap B-attack, the most you can do is roll behind him. If you're already trapped against a wall and you've been stuck in that twirling sword for more than a few seconds, just hope you get launched in the air soon so you can dodge him (shield mid-air, then just move out of the way then roll) before he strikes you mid-air. ...but to avoid that from ever happening again, keep launching him in the air and avoid walls at all costs, eventually they'll look like a fool trying to be cheap.
...of course, the easiest way is: When you see him start, make a small jump over his head and attack him from behind. Simple and effective.

This review is incredibly poor in so many ways. Not only from the perspective that nobody else agrees, but also just in it's writing (You talk about the things you don't like, and have a short sentence about what's good, and give it a great score?)
Brawl has a few problems as a game, sure. Every game has a few things that people wish were handled differently. Overall, though, it's a very fun one, and really reviews are pointless. Anybody with half a soul is going to have more than their money's worth in entertainment.
The only major problem with brawl, the one thing that nobody could possibly like, is that Nintendo (in usual "screw demand." fashion) underestimated how popular online play would be, and it's hard to get a match going, and they tend to be laggy when they do connect. However, that won't last for long, as Nintendo will assuredly be upgrading their systems, and the initial "OMG MUST PLAY BRAWL" feeling wears off. I did manage to get a few games to work, and they were very smooth and fun experiences.

I think whether or not you consider Brawl to be the "best Wii game" depends on how you're judging it. I'd bet it will be the longest-lasting in terms of replayability, and maybe even the most fun in a group competitive setting.
Other games are great for different reasons though. I will probably log more hours on Brawl than on any other Wii game (with the possible exception of Mario Kart Wii), but even then I'm not sure I'd call it the best. (I also greatly enjoyed Galaxy, for entirely different reasons.)

So far I've only used the Wavebird (win), the classic controller (painful transition), and a wireless PS2 controller w/ GC adapter (ok). Change is tough and I'm used to Melee.
As far as Snake goes, the one thing you have to remember is to keep him moving and dropping C4 often. I find the Nikita is good for two things: close range attacks that won't leave you defenseless and going after the smash ball while everyone else is busy ignoring you. But I agree, you have to be a bit more strategic than your average Brawler. Things like planting mines and C4 usually don't go hand and hand with spontaneity.
Lastly, I agree about Mega Man. That would have been the cherry on top of the sundae. But even without it, it still tastes good.

I laugh at...
- gamers who claim that Brawl sucks and/or isn't very good, then go on to say that they've never played four player local multiplayer
- readers who bitch about a casual review which isn't afraid to focus on some oft-overlooked flaws
- reviews that complain that the gameplay remains unchanged from Melee (that's the BEST part about this game!)
- fanboy debates about declaring a "best" game; they are all good, now just go play your favorite damn it!

I actually prefer the wiimote and nunchuk configure, my thumb never slides off. Also Snake is a really good character, hes different but it doesn't take long to get used to him and when you do, he owns every other character.

I wouldn't go as far to say that Snake owns every other character.
He's great, but he has just as many flaws as the other characters.
Other than that, glad there's someone else around here that appreciates the Wiimote-Nunchuk combo.

I'm trying to get used to it (so I can go to other folks' houses without a problem), but its so hard coming from a mad Melee player using GC controller.
Using an index for one of the primarily used buttons (B) takes a fair bit of getting used to. Using the index AND having it on the left hand for jumping is really hard to get used to - and the Dpad Up is too far of a stretch. Slowly getting used to the grabs with A+B, but overall its such a brain rack to think what I used to press... and how to translate.
Having so much frustration cuz I'm not as fast and natural as I used to be lol.

Think about this way guys, Brawl kicks so much ass that you can't have a review on everything great about it. You may as well shine the bad things, cause everything else is great(David even said it himself,"Aside from the boring SSE and buggy online play, there isn't much fault...")
