I always liked the first best. Every DQ game after that hasn't really lived up to the feelings I had playing numero uno.

The problem with some of the later DW/DQ gamnes is that with 2 and 3 I was cheesed at my guys constantly wiffing attacks because their target was dead and gone. didn't play another until I bought Dragon Quarter for the PS2, which while it had some improvements over the older sequels, I hated how even after hours of grinding, you still were really too weak to take on more than a few battles. (especially since healing items were absolutely scarce, and there weren't any Inns whatsoever.)

I have to say my favorite was DQVII. Though VIII and Rocket Slime are close seconds.

I also have to go with the first Dragon Warrior. I got it through Nintendo Power and loved it. It is one of the games that got me hooked on RPGs.

Dragon Quest IV has always been my hands down favorite. The Chapter system with the varied characters definitely was the right way to go. Taloon being my favorite chapter, it was so different than other RPG's, then and Now. Dragon Quest I would be a close second, an actual Hard game and it didn't pull any punches or apologize for it, like so many games now. I think we all remember how friggin long it took to get the money to buy the Flame Sword and Silver Shield, and how much of a difference they made in Dragon Lord's Castle.

The first was my favorite. I remember getting my copy as a reward for subscribing to Nintendo Power. Several of my friends didn't believe me when I told them I had finished the game, so I hooked my NES up to my VCR and recorded the final boss fight. I still have that tape somewhere.

I second the nomination of the first DW game. There was just something so great about it, playing through as a kid. It was a very unforgiving game for myself at age six. I love looking back at the game now, and realizing it was just a Japanese RPG with an American font and dialog tacked over it to make it more appealing to the DnD-types.

I'd have to say Dragon Warrior 4. I loved the story and the way that they introduced the characters through the individual chapters.
Dragon Warrior 3 is a close second, though.

Its tough to choose the best, but I would have to say Dragon Warrior 3 is the best. It was a great conclusion/prequel to the Loto trilogy and it was awesome to find out that the whole time you were playing as Loto himself.

Original Dragon Warrior, of course. Where would we be without it?
IN A WORLD WITHOUT CRPGs, THAT'S WHERE. Well, at least a world without Dragon Quest, but that's bad enough.
