You can all breathe easier now ... considering, of course, that you trust the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine, which has been known to be wrong on a few issues here and there.
When we reported rumors that the dreaded snaking technique would worm its way to Mario Kart Wii, many of you vented your irritation in the comments. According to ONM, though, snaking won't be exploitable in the upcoming Wii racer.
The magazine reported in its review of the game, "Ever since the N64 game, practically every Mario Kart game has included the ability to get a speed boost by waggling the controls left and right as you powerslide. This has finally been scrapped, and now your speed boost is determined by how long you can hold the slide." Sounds like a better system to us.
Yet, we're sure that some of you are advocates of snaking, and are not happy by this turn of events. So, now it's your turn to vent in the comments -- let us hear your woes, snakers.

I don't know. I haven't played a Mario Kart since Mario Kart 64, but I was damn good at what I guess is called "snaking" these days. I guess I'll see how this new thing turns out.

I'm not really sure where I stand on this, snaking in MK64 and DD was ok, I was pretty good at it. MK on the DS made my thumb hurt.. at times my bones clicked... ouch.. to be honest it's a bit of a strange concept for a racing game anyway so I'm open to seeing what it's like being dropped from the game. It could make it better, it might level the playing field a little. Ever tried to explain how to do it to a noob friend? They have no idea, it's a hard thing to pull off for the uninitiated... roll on release day!

Finally the scrubs can stop whining, because an integral technique intentionally built into the game that they are too stupid to utilize has at last been removed. Hip-hip-hooray.

I'm glad they are doing something about this. It takes all the fun out of the game. It shouldn't be about winning and it's not like the AI is so hard that you need to do it. The game is about hurling items at your friends while you race. That's why I like MK and it's what sets it apart from other racers.

Hey, I'm "guilty" of snaking since MK64, and even I will admit it's totally cheap. I won't miss it much.

Don't you worry, a Meta-Game will likely still develop from this change in power-boosting.

They should put Sakurai on the Mario Kart staff, if only to have someone absolutely dedicated to balancing the gameplay on staff. This is a good move, but it will surely be supplanted by some expert exploit or other

Thank god.
Snaking was the stupidest feature in the MK games. The game became less about having fun and more about who can snake the best, when in actuality the game was made to be about racing and shooting your friends with crazy weapons.
Maybe Mario Kart Wii will be the first MK game I'll buy since Mario Kart for the SNES.

Meh. Snaking really wasn't any sort of an "exploit" and definitely no sort of a glitch. It was just executing a series of moves faster than intended to gain an advantage, just like wavedashing. Just like wavedashing, they could have very easily left it in, but Nintendo's whole viewpoint is to make their games less of a competitive sport and more of just a form of entertainment. You're supposed to get together with your friends and have a good time with these, not play them online for 10 hours at a time to get your rank on some stupid leaderboard up.
I really couldn't care less on the whole snaking issue, but I fully support Nintendo's view on people who play fun games competitively, so whatever must be done, let it be done.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
This is the absolute BEST thing big N could have done.
Online will now be fun.
It sucks on the DS because all the snakers go and dominate it. Maybe because they don't like racing side by side... who knows
The only other thing they could have done was make it an option.
So at least then you could choose to to race with those cheaters, err snakers, or without them.
I would bet millions that the non snaking servers/races would have been waaaaay more popular though!

Well at least they didn't remove it before DoubleDash!!
Half the fun of taking a turn in DD was the teamwork involved with getting blue sparks. there were jumps in Waluigi Stadium where my roommate and I could get blue sparks before we'd landed the kart, go right into a turn and boost out of it.
None of our group ever really thought of it as cheap until we played online in MKDS where, as in every online game, most people are just poor sports. Playing either DD or DS amongst ourselves, in our group of friends, was fine and fun, regardless of the boost technique the game employed.
So I'm torn on this. Since there's no doubled-up karts in this one I won't miss the teamwork element inherent in (multiplayer) Doubledash!!, so I guess it's alright.
Also, come to think of it, how would the traditional snaking method have worked with the wheel anyway?

excessive snaking is downright cheating and annoying as hell. whenever im on wi-fi for DS and i see people sliding all over the place i try to target them with items the best i can. its actually pretty fun to disconnect when some idiot with a 1543 - 6 record has snaked his way *almost* to the finish line :0

Well, I saw this coming (idk if anyone else did, but). Really only because of them taking out wave dashing in Brawl. I never did that, but I do like to snake. But only to piss off my crappy friends :D. I don't mind, I will still have just as much fun.

I say good riddance to a 'technique' used way too often to cheat. This should make the online racing more balanced and enjoyable.
Snaking is really the only thing I don't like about MarioKart DS's online mode...you find these racers that ONLY snake. It's like they don't want to be involved in the fun of the actual race and item usage.
Close races are always the most fun...everyone can still have a chance to win.

as soon as the snaking thing hit MK DS, i traded it in. my wife and i loved playing online together, but the snaking of opponents took the fun out of it completely. when 10 blue turtle shells doesn't stop you, obviously it what you are doing wasn't meant to be part of the game.

I'm glad they are taking the snaking out. It wouldn't have been such a problem for one player mode but for online play it was horrible, I even tried it myself so I could have a chance to beat someone in an online match because I couldn't find anyone that didn't snake but it was annoying to have to press the buttons all the time to snake, I couldn't even enjoy the game.

snaking was awesome. it added another dimension to each track, and made you have to learn where abouts you could get a quick waggle of the thumb in without crashing! I never thought time trials would be so much fun as they were on baby park with snaking

I loved snaking. It was fun and i've used it since MK64. But I have to agree it's sort of cheap, and I always won when using it. So for the sake of everyone out there its better this way...
