We're not going to go too far into our personal opinions about Sonic and his recent games -- we'll just say that previous 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games have failed to meet many fans' expectations. Are you ready to give him another chance? Does the new trailer and the promise of side-scrolling gameplay resonate with you? To be honest, it totally does with us. That trailer worked, and we don't want to be the only ones who thought so.

Secret Rings was a return to form, if you count the number of characters that even appeared, in the actual gameplay, its only two: Sonic & Knuckles (you find him trapped in a cage in a few missions in that sky world that they had), Eggman and Tails where there, but only in those storyboards they used in lieu of cutscenes
However, actually making Knuckles playable makes me happy. I'd enjoy this game either way though, I loved Sonic Adventures 1 & 2 and Sonic Heroes

I agree with you Sonic Adventure is probably one of my favorite games of all time, and with the beautiful yet disapointing Sonic the Hedgehog 360 I'm really hoping Unleashed will give what i was looking for.

Secret Rings was in no way a "return to form." Traditional Sonic gameplay isn't on rails, and it isn't in a fully 3D view.

From the looks of the trailer they are moving in the right direction. Backing up from a lot of changes they tried to make going back to its 2D form. And trying to incorporate new ideas instead of forcing them upon the game community. I've always been a Sonic Fan, and Secret rings was not the best game, but had a good basis to grow on which I hope they are doing with Unleashed.
PS: The whole werewolf thing totally spells out LoZ TP -_-

I gotta say i've been playing sonic for years...I was a NES/Sega baby...but i'd say that none of his tittles in the last 9 years can compare to the old stuff....Sonic 1,2,3, and Sonic CD where awesome. But When i first opened my dreamcast and poped sonic adventure in i knew that it was trash...i've played most of the games since then and i've only been more and more dissapointed...the only ones that are anygood were the DS "Rush" tittles and i only had one of them...IF this game is any good it has to be a SONIC game..not a tails or nuckles or amy or shadow or anyone else game...screw new characters too. The 2D aspect looks good and hopfully sega uses the Wii graphics (yes i mean graphics) to its full power. Sonic team is one of my fav developers but some of there games look like my butt on a bad day...

Amen to that! Sonic 1,2,3, knuckles and CD are great games, and definitly all rank in my top 50 all time. Heck, even sonic spinball was ok for its time. 3D blast was the only one that sucked back then, but the series definitly went downhill with sonic adventure and sonic heroes. But from what this trailer is showing, there is some promise... lets just hope

I think it looks amazing. I have pretty much hated any new home console sonic game Sonic and his secret ring was a shoddy effort of a game and I will burn any one who dares sing "make believe reborn" at me.
I think its a giood idea to go for spead and reflex jumping in 2d Sonic stylee because going by the handheld incarnations its what Sega do best.

It looks like Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush is fangasmic. People are so quick to write Sonic off completely, even though there are still good Sonic games, they're just not on consoles these days. Hopefully Unleashed will change that.

Reasons why I am very pessimistic for this game.
1) Takes place in the real world. That totally wrecks any sort of suspention of disbelief. Imagine a Mario game taking place in Brooklyn. That's how dumb it is fo rme to see Sonic in real life environments.
2) Like in previous 3D Sonic games, this game's composer continues to show no understanding of the meaning of "appropraite soundtrack for a game about a cute, blue hedgehog".
3) Werewolf? Really?
2.5d is fine and all, but everything else about this game smells of continued crap. Sega still does not seem to understand what made the first five Sonic games great (1-4, CD). Just putting the games back in the second dimension isn't enough to show me that they have wised up.

Never can I remember a time when Sonic was EVER supposed to be a "cute, blue hedgehog."

It has never been about an "appropriate soundtrack for a game about a cute, blue hedgehog".
You want to complain about Sonic music?
Start at Sonic R for Saturn and listen to EVERY Sonic game after. Dance pop, pop rock, pop punk, and with vocals? Absolutely terrible. Even after a 1:28 minute demo, I can tell this new music is exactly like the older sonic games. Generic, instrumental, 'running at high speeds' music. What more do you need?

I liked Secret Rings, and maybe playing as Sonic in Sonic Adventure, but lets face it. It looks like a great classic game, and, well, if it IS Sonic Rush on a console, I may barf. Don't get me wrong! It was fine. But it still could not capture the original magic. If SEGA screws this up, it's over. But that's what I said about a lot of games like Shadow. Screen Was so dark I could barely see him!

I agree with others who wish they stopped putting Sonic in "the real world," but I'll still be watching this game closely. Give me solid controls and camera and more of the old/Rush style of gameplay back and I'll be there.

I thought the Rush titles where no bad...better than his 3d attempts....I'd be happy if the blasted camera decides to work, remember one step at a time and for a Sonic game that's a MASSIVE step. If they want me to buy, I want non-last gen graphics(ps2 port) and Wii controls that are not tacked on or overly gimmicky.....

Not sure what to think about this game. Guess won't think about it at all until I rent it.
Well, at least it is like Altered Beast with Blast Processing.

They almost nailed it with secret rings, but just missed due to a few control weirdnesses. Don't get me wrong, I know the control got better in that game, it's just even at "perfection" it didn't always do what you wanted. Stopping or going backwards was still like fighting the game to do what you wanted it to do.
This though seems to finally have them realizing what they should have done from the start. A lot of you guys said you'd "barf" if it was in the real world type environments like this, but I'm personally for it. I got tired of the environments of the 2D era quite quickly, and I think Sonic CD was pretty much the last game I could take of it (got really irritating at that point..). If you think about it, Sonic has been in the "real world" for a while now.. ever since the Dreamcast days. It's not "Brooklyn" as someone said, as it's still fictional and often fantasy (i dont know where you live, but there are no dinos and pirates ships anywhere near me like in Secret Rings).
I say I'm for it as long as they take advantage of the system. We say awesome things with Secret Rings graphically, now let's just not take a step backwards with a ps2 port, k?

Sonic was/is the king of 2D. I have faith that this title won't be nearly as bad as past iterations if they just stick to the 2/2.5D...

The phrase "return to form" is hardly applied to EVERY Sonic game. Perhaps to Sonic Rush, but anyone who thinks that Secret Rings or, god forbid, Sonic Heroes was a "return to form" needs their head checked.
People are saying this game will take Sonic back to his roots because it is doing something that NO Sonic game on a console has done in YEARS (since the Genesis, for God's sake, not counting compilations/virtual console) - it is taking the series back to FULL 2D (save for certain tastefully short segments of on rails 3D). That means NO more horrific 3D platforming, no more camera problems...just running. And thats what the series is about - holding the joystick in one direction and watching the scenery blaze by, stopping every few seconds to get past an obstacle or destroy an enemy.

One of my biggest problems with sonic is they don't have the old physics the game was based on: The way that Wavy terrain would effects sonics momentum and gave us interesting levels to travel through. I look at that trailer and sonic barely interacts with his environment at all. He could fly over that level and you wouldn't notice the difference.

Well,
I'm open to it. Everything about the trailer was perfect--except for the few shots where the camera was behind Sonic. Those scenes scared me because I thought this was supposed to be a side-scrolling Sonic! I also am worried about the few other scenes where Sonic was whipping around a curve and the camera stayed put. I want the action and intensity of the side-scrolling Sonic without control being taken from me in random places. Graphics and music, environment and general vibe were right on, however. I'm crossing my fingers. I'm usually not this critical about Sonic games, but with so much potential riding on this release, I want to see Sonic back in perfect form.
Here's hoping,
