Don't get us wrong -- we're not against downloadable content by any means. Yet, the way in which microtransactions were presented during the
WiiWare launch for games like
Lonpos and
My Life as a King seems really ... cheap. And by cheap, we mean the DLC is a total cheap shot, because it's actually
expensive. Take Square Enix's title, for example, which released
$13 worth of downloadable content on its first week. Yes, we're familiar with the "If you don't want it, then don't buy it" argument (and we
won't), but all of that just sours us on the game in general.
What do you think, though? Are we being to hard on
Lonpos and
My Life as a King? Or, is there a wrong and right way to present DLC? Then again, it could also be possible that you don't support
any microtransactions. Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I'm all for it when it's implemented well. Guitar Hero 3 has 70+ songs. If there was no DLC, it probably STILL would have only had that many songs. If Smash Bros. Brawl had DLC, it'd most likely be a similar case.
Then there are bullshit cases like My Life as King they're they're just withholding parts of the game so they can charge you extra later. That pisses me off to no end. Don't even get me started on crap like Beautiful Katamari where the DLC is ALREADY ON THE DISC WHEN YOU BUY IT and they make you pay extra just to unlock it.
It's enough to turn me off the whole concept, really. I mean, come on. The Wii's first instance of DLC has been a complete ripoff. This is what people have been whining for since launch. It's sad.

I'm into DLC but not when the content is already created and available before the release of the game. I think DLC should only be add ons created after the game's release.

Nintendo has to enable DLC for other games than WiiWare like Guitar Hero, Rockband, maybe even brawl. But then they would have to release a patch for the game to read the DLC maybe. But if they argue about the space on the Wii, we all have SD cards i'm sure. I dont know. I'll shut up now...

It's one thing to make a game, and release only part of it. Then make people pay for the rest in micros, even if its already on the disc or adds barely anything.
There are two kinds of DLC:
A) Content that expands the life and replay value of a game.
B) Content that is trivial and gives a great sense of being nickel and dimed.
If companies are going to try this nickel and dime garbage, they could at least pack a lot of it together and make it feel as though it has some value to some people. I really dont intend to partake in this, nor buy the game at all.

The flip side though is that trivial content is easily skipped in DLC so really only the people with money to burn or that it looks just too darn cute to have that DLC horse armor in oblivion will buy it.
Forcing customers to buy DLC to finish what should be the core experience in a game is what is at issue here, not extras.

I'm really pissed about all the microtransactions on my life as king, that game was a definite buy, but now I may not. I don't see the harm in paying for some map packs for shooters after they have been out for awhile, but to have that much content so close to its release just shows that the purpose of the game is to gouge gamers.

I don't mind at all really.
I've been jipped more times than I'd like to remember in MMOs...
Where a bunch of rich kids would become more than uber-powerful because of their cash!
... this, not so much.
As far as I can see, a great city and game could be played out even without all those extra options. Just try to ignore it, that's what I do with some games.
It's Square... it's not like they've never been in it for the money.
I expect worse from them.
But like I said: This, is just fine. I don't mind.

I also do not mind - if it is truly add-on things.
But there is another point here. You see demo: all looks great and all looks interesting. So you buy game. One you bought game, you realize that all those things you have seen and liked in demos were extras you have to buy additionally.
With DLC there is always danger that game publishers would try to charge you for basic functionality. And that's very bad.

I've been ripped off by MMOs that charge a monthly fee and don't do anything bug bug fix for 3-4 months :( DLC seems to be the opposite where the customer gets control of what content to pay for.

the whole memory on the Wii thing tells you that DLC won't right away that DLC won't be available for mainstream games, so forget about expanding the life of major titles and assume the position to be invasively molested with Wiiware DLC for games that should have included all of that content to begin with.
I'm totally against these business model, just like that game that sells you it's ammo when it's a first person shooter and bullets are what you need to advance in the game for crying out loud. Anyboby knows the name?

I'm not going to make too much of a big deal. Yes.. I think it seems like a cheap shot.. but you already know the argument. You can be cheap and not get the other stuff. And then again.. do you really 'need' everything.
I think this does open a door.. Of course Square made bad mistakes in the past, but this doesn't have to be one of them. After playing stuff like Second life and blah...I'm used to it. Of course very rarely do I buy stuff, but i'll make an exception for this

Armor for Epona = No
Extra Dungeons = Maybe
It all depends on the price and value.

Armor for epona: $.40
Extra dungeons: $19.99
You make the equation too simple. People will buy anything for the right price and won't buy everything for the wrong price.

I agree with the others; there are pointless add-ons, which are dumb, but unoffensive since you don't have to buy them, there are neat extras, like new levels or puzzles or something along those lines, and then there are things that just should've been included, like the races in FFCC, these are the most offensive examples

as long as they're actual extra's not needed to play and enjoy the game in it's full glory than I'm ok with it. But when they start selling vital parts of the game (like My Life as a King seems to be doing) than it sort of sucks.

I'm not happy about this.
I look at a game like Fable. Terrific game, but when the 'Lost Chapters' extras were released, I felt ripped off. I already paid for this game, I deserve to play it in it's entirety.
Square is doing the same thing, except you can feel like you're missing out and/or being ripped off from the game's launch! Neat-o.

I think it should have been brought to the attention of software companies like 5 years ago, nobody wants an incomplete game for a regular game price. Paying for a patch is worse than insulting, it shows that companies aren't concerned with the consumers. Anyone who supports these microtransactions is only feeding this very bad trend in commerce.
DLC levels though, 6 or so months after a game has been released is acceptable. I mean we don't need something like how the Kingdom hearts series has..... where in Japan the game is released, then in america, then AGAIN in japan as a "special edition" I'd gladly pay for an expansion pack that added playtime to a game I'ev beaten.
