SD cards is the way to go with SSBB save files.
I never really had a use with my SD card (except for switching a few files here and there... and maybe a few mp3s), until I got SSBB.... the amount of files you can store in just 1 GB is amazing!
I'm already up to my 100th custom-built stage. :D

I've got just over 1000 blocks left, but but that could drastically decrease with the additional channel on Mario Kart and Kirby 64...
...to be honest, I play a lot of games but I really don't see how people have already maxed out their Wii memory via VC games. But I speak from a strictly selfish perspective as I already have many of the better VC games on the GBA/Mega Drive, so...
But I do honestly believe, for the average person, the amount of space the Wii has is fine. It's mostly the saber rattlers on the internet who complain.
Though, I would like to know how much space an average WiiWare game will take up. Not too much one hopes.

There are N64 games that go as high as 250 blocks, maybe more. It doesn't take many of those to fill up a Wii. I'm thinking many WiiWare games (like My Life as King) will be even bigger.

Yeah, maybe you're right.
I've got Sin & Punishment and Paper Mario and I remember they both took a dear amount of space. But I've tended to stay away from rest of the N64 games - primarily because the console was a tad overrated.

I've got about 30 blocks left, enough for one more tg16 game, or a small nes title. I started to back them up onto my SD card, but the transfer rate is sooooooooooooooooo SLOOOOOOOOOW that its easier and quicker to delete and download.
Anyone know why its so slow? Even a USB 1.1 card reader can transfer files faster. Sigh...

You are probably using slower SD card. My Wii has SanDisk Ultra II 2 GB and it's pretty fast.

Well, maybe it's faster just cuz it's a Wii SD card... maybe that's why they made those. O_o

I don't think Wii SD cards are any different than regular SD cards... they just say they 're for the Wii so they can jack up the price for people who don't know any better. :-/

or because people like me like it cuz it has the word Wii in it, and it's pretty white. ... but does anyone know why it's slow for that guy? My transfers are quick.

I've got about 900 to 950 blocks left on my Wii left.
I'm currently still playing Brawl and Bully: Scholarship Edition but with me wanting Pinball Hall of Fame - The Williams Collection, Mario Kart Wii, and Okami next month and with releases of games like Battle of the Bands, De Blob, Wii Fit, Wii Ware games and probably more VC games to come I'm starting to get worried and will have to invest in a SD card.

I think i'm at 1200 or so, but thats because i've been very conservative about what gets bought, only 7 VC games so far, plus the Internet Channel and Check Mii Out (which i haven't used in forever and will probably delete)
All my Brawl junk is going right to the SD Card

Before Brawl came out I had 7 blocks free. Upon starting Brawl I learned that I needed 128 for my save, so I deleted Lords of Thunder (although now I really want to play it again, so I'll probably delete something else today), and so now I have 86 blocks free.

I've got plenty to go around since i have downloaded 2 NES games and 1 SNES game.
I'm not an internet saber rattler, but the Wii really needs to upgrade somehow it's memory through a hard drive add on or been able to put more internal memory through Nintendo or whatever method since the transfer rate from SD cards is so slow and so and wiiware games are meant to be big, at least N64 big.

I got 360 blocks left. They really need to open up the SD Card capabilities. The problem with deleting/moving your VC games right now is that:
A: You can't PLAY the game off of the SD Card, which everyone already knows.
and...
B: You lose your suspend point on any game other than N64 games.

Really? The save data is a separate file, though, isn't it?
4-08-2008 @ 10:01PM
hohum said...
@Roto13 - Yes, save files are separate files that can be copied. By "suspend point," I believe that Co meant the system state freeze that happens when you go home from an NES, SNES, &c. (anything other than N64, which makes Co's post rather confusing...)... So basically if the cart had a save feature back in the day, those are saved and can be transferred to an SD card. But a game like SMB with no save, it won't let you copy the "paused" state of the game which allows you to leave and come back to it later. This is why when you go to transfer the save files from an older system to an SD card, you usually get an error... the save that was built into the original cart will transfer fine, the system state won't.

Mainly due to N64 VC games, I ran out of internal memory about two months ago. I've been swapping games around to the card and back, and I don't enjoy it.
Nintendo, let us play VC games from the card. It needs to happen.

I've got about 30 to 40 blocks free on my Wii's internal flash memory. I did have 3 pages full of games on the Wii menu but SSBB's save file takes 128 blocks so I had to clean out some stuff. My SD card is a 1 gig & I haven't come close to filling it. But, I'd like to have another just for digital pictures and music.
Nintendo desparately needs a plan to expand on the Wii's memory. About 1 year after launch, Mine was completely filled with VC titles. And now, here comes Wii Ware... wtf?

Mine's pretty much empty, since I have only the Internet Channel, Metroid Preview, and Check Mii Out channels. I think VC games are ridiculously priced, because $5 for an NES game....you can buy a whole NES plus tons of games for that price at some yard sales! Anyways, got most of those on emulators and when Wii Homebrew gets better, won't need VC at all.

I just had an idea: To let people have their games on SD Card, but still patently disable piracy:
Keys! Like the key i had to download when i bought WinRAR, you download a key with every VC game that is tied to the console, and completely immovable and impossible to copy, but a separate file. To run the VC game, you have to have the key
The game could be run from anywhere, but the key, a very small file, would be needed to run it

Awesome! And hard to manage! :P
...I often lose my keys, I'm flawed to that point.
But I suppose you could charge a small fee for a replacement key... I think.

good idea but.. it can lead to SO many problems, like the countless DRM-related problems that XBOX 360 owners have had whenever they've gotten a replacement unit

Actually, Nintendo has keys built into every VC title, though they must have some sort of backup system for it, since they can restore your games if they have to swap consoles. Either that, or they just slap the titles onto the replacement.

Actually, the Wii probably has the best storage option of any of the current consoles. Don't agree? Read on...
Sure it isn't a lot of space, but if Nintendo would get off their ass, and help 3rd party's use content off of the SD card in a game for DLC (heck, even play VC games off of the SD cards), it would be great!
Lets hope they actually do this, and offer new race tracks (or classic ones) for Mario Kart! That would be awesome!
Just download new/classic characters, karts, tracks all to an SD card through WiiWare, and it could be HUGE!
SD cards are FAR more reliable than Hard Drives. And really the Wii really has unlimited storage space, where most xbox's are stuck at 20GB. At current SD prices, LESS than $20 will match that amount of space. It is a bummer that the Wii doesn't fully support SDHC cards though. Next console, though.
So you will end up with many SD cards, big deal. I can easily manage which SD cards have what game data on them.
If Nintendo would get off it's ass and help 3rd parties with SD access, specifically for DLC (think Rock Band / GH here). Companies would actually make DLC, between that and convincing them to sell DLC through WiiWare, they really could have a HUGE market here if they actually thought about it.
It's a real shame they appear to be so short sighted here at this point.
With the Wii's standard game price still being $50 (xbox & ps3 are $60). Just take that extra $10, buy a 1GB SD Card for DLC. Seems pretty simple for users.

I went and cleared out a bunch of junk files like old saves and stuff about a week ago, so I'm back over the 100 block mark again with 105 blocks total. I'm trying to keep those 100 blocks open for more save files and smaller VC games/VC games I absolutely cannot pass up (SMRPG, Illusion of Gaia)
