Or lyc-hedgehog-py, or whatever. You know, the werewolf thing that we all knew was coming, because we all saw the leaked screenshots? It's real! Sega's latest trailer focuses on this aspect of Sonic Unleashed, giving us a sneak peek at the thing we've already totally seen. Of course, we don't yet know how this figures into gameplay. Soon we'll find out whether a (cartoon) wolf (who is also part hedgehog) is faster or slower than cartoon hedgehog.
As a bonus, you get to hear how the Sonic voice actor (sorry, Sonic voice-acting aficionados! We can't tell which one it is!) interprets the sound of a hedgehog turning into a werewolf. Do they teach that in acting class?

What's wrong with, perhaps, a Sonic game that is just a damned Sonic game? I swear, they looked at Twilight Princess and said "It worked for Link!"
Sonic doesn't need to turn into something else, he's f-ing Sonic.
Bravo Sega for destroying the first excitement for a Sonic title that I had in a long while.

Because there's already a JUST A SONIC GAME...
It's called the original collections.
If a quirky Sonic formula(/storyline) 100% works, they may consider just relaxing and going back to the basics. ...they really want Sonic to be taken seriously, apparently.
Throw 'em a bone, will ya'?

And by that logic, Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Twilight Princess should've both been bad, because they were radically different to the games that preceded them. But they weren't. Quite the opposite, actually.
Sega have undeniably let fans down lately, but that's not instantly a reason to write the game off before you've even seen it.

@ Pie Pants: Super Mario Galaxy was fun because it felt like the original, all they changed was the location of the levels. Though, IMHO, it has very little replay value, unlike the originals, and in the end, it feels a bit short and gimmicky.
As for Twilight Princess, don't get me started... I was sorta pissed, it was not nearly as great as they hyped it to be. Switching randomly between a wolf and human wasn't that exciting or anything, and the game was pretty boring compared to OoT. Though some innovation is good, I totally agree that they're taking it too far lately...

I'll be honest. This looks like a piece of crap smeared all over a really fat guy's butt. Sonic was fine, but lately... every game thinks innovation. Innovation is good, but make more of the classic, successful games. Seriously, Sonic didn't need any gimmicks, so STOP PUTTING THEM IN!!!
I'm sorry, but the Sonic series is now dead for me. It was dying by Sonic Adventure, dead by Sonic Heroes, ALMOST revitalized with Sonic Advance, then buried by the next gen Sonic.
I'm holding out for Sonic RPG. Please don't let them screw that up (though Sonic doesn't need the gimmick).

Just ignore it. :P
Think of it as... hmmm... Final Fantasy... there will be some you absolutely hate, so ignore it until a good one comes out. :D

...sorry, horrible example. I'm not a Final Fantasy fan. Tactics Advance was the only one I really like, and Crystal Chronicles was okay, but... those are offshoots, I don't care for the "normal" ones...

The wolf part is nothing. As long as it has good gameplay then it doesn't matter. Gameplay comes first, then Sega can start taking a look into the actual characters and making it better (i.e. how it used to be)
Here's what you should be concerned about. They said the game will involve melee combat. To me, that sounds much more dreadful then a lame werewolf gimmick.

I'm agreeing with you, if it plays well I'll overlook the dodgy weresonice thing....
And I think it is wolf-sonic that does the melee....gotta rope in those 360 fans somehow......
I'll keep an eye on this and hope for the best.

Judging solely from the (albeit werewolf-less) gameplay footage we've seen so far, I'm still keeping an eye on this title.

I think you'll find that the werewolf levels will be interspersed with regular sonic levels. The sonic ones will obviously about speed and racing style gameplay, and the werewolf ones will have a heavier focus on combat or slower, more refined platforming. Could go either way, but here's hoping it's the much needed return to form that the sonic franchise needs.

A lotta people seem to think the Sonic series' biggest strength is its sense of speed. This is flat wrong. The true genius of the original Sonic games was the physics-based platforming, which resulted in short bursts of speed through loop-de-loops or tubes going from one puzzle area to the next. The "speed" in Sonic games was essentially a reward for good behavior. I did a write-up of this on Joystiq a few days ago; reposting it here:
Best moments in Sonic history:
Sonic 1, Marble Zone: riding moving platforms across the lava pits while avoiding lava waterfalls. Plus, Sonic music just doesn't get any better than the catchy tune in Labyrinth zone.
Sonic 2, Hill Top: playing see-saw with a rock-shaped badnik in order to fling Sonic to unreachable heights
Sonic 3: Landing on spikes in Marble Garden zone... and bouncing off?! Also, popping balloons in Carnival Night zone was great.
Sonic & Knuckles: The epic boss fight at the end of Lava Reef zone is quite possibly the crowning achievement of the Sonic formula... after that the series pretty much went downhill.
What do these things have in common? None of them have anything to do with retina-melting non-stop bursts of speed set to "extreme" guitar riffs.
C'mon, Sega! Bring back the charm and creative platforming that made Sonic games good in the first place!

Ugh, just the other day I thought this game might have promise. Sonic the Werewolf is just as dumb as can be. Sorry to the Sonic fans defending this, but with Segas track record and this stupidity I'm not even giving this a shot.

Meaning Sabe took away from this trailer: Mickey Mouse transforms into the Abominable Snowman.
