There is approximately zero chance of Cinemaware's The Three Stooges ever making it to the Virtual Console. Nobody's going to bother to reacquire the publishing rights to the likenesses of a comedy act of (sadly) decreasing relevance, just for the purpose of reselling an awful game for five dollars. That's what we thought, before we remembered that The Three Stooges, originally an Amiga game, had actually been resold recently on both the Game Boy Advance and the PlayStation, and even remade for the PC. Who knows? Maybe there is a market for antiquated licenses!
The Three Stooges tells the story of three ill-tempered, violent derelicts drawn together by extreme poverty and desperate for money. In the game, their need for cash is driven not by survival, but by a promise to raise money to protect an orphanage from foreclosure. Being unskilled (and probably homeless), Moe, Larry, and Curly have no choice but to take whatever opportunities they can get, from boxing and cracker-eating contests to, uh, part-time jobs as ER doctors. This is in keeping with the plot of the short films in which they appeared, and in fact the jobs (and the images from which many of the graphics were poorly digitized) come directly from classic Stooges material.

The other standout game is the cracker-eating contest, in which Curly must pick up oyster crackers before one of the oysters does. This thrilling game about eating soup was based on Dutiful but Dumb. Other games involve trivia, navigating the Stooges (in wheelchairs) down a hospital hallway, and throwing pies. Over time, the hand icon that selects the games moves faster (making it harder to stop it where you want), and you can slow it down by successfully slapping and eye-poking Larry and Curly in another short game. In essence, The Three Stooges is a prototypical minigame collection, and thus quite appropriate for the Wii.

^_^ omg! i remember watching those guys during music class! and at home on them oldies channels!
to me, this game seems worth whatever small price tag they put on it, it's like buying history! these guys were the definition of American slap-stick comedy back in the day, so i wouldn't mind paying $5 to play their lame game...
p.s.: on the channel Boomerang, they sometimes show a cartoon of the Three Stooges, but they've been turned into... GAH! Cyborgs! lame-ness ensues...

If they could make an amazingly good version of this game for the Gameboy Advanced, I don't see why they wouldn't wrestle to get the license for VC too.
I had this game for my Commodore 128, I loved playing it. Oy was a game I could always turn to.

Man, I know it is off topic, but this really reminds me of the Gilligan's Island game I had for NES. I think it was pretty bad too, but all I remember is climbing up a coconut tree.

You know Max,
I used to enjoy that game. Unfortunately, it was stolen before I could beat it. Eventually I found a used copy at a video rental store that was in pretty good shape and a good price and I snagged it. After playing though it, it's actually quite a good NES game in my opinion! It's well put together, original and pretty faithful to the series considering the way other licensed games of the time usually were.
Peace,

Ha! I am a proud owner of this game. I can (almost) still remember picking it out at Toys R Us as a birthday gift when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old. It still plays as beautifully today as it did back then. Definitely a sleeper hit.

I had this game. It was actually a lot of fun. In particular the level where Larry needs to get his violin and the hospital level.
I love the 3 Stooges and was more or less raised on them though, so I might be a tad biased.

I absolutely LOVED playing this game on my Commodore 64, the hospital level was my favorite but the others were also very good. I'd buy this for my Wii if it was available, no doubt about it.
Man I can still see the guys in the game walking down the sidewalk, Curly trying to NOT step on the cracks...

The definitive version of this game is the original Amiga version. The graphics were far and away better, and the sound included many clips from the Stooges. If you were a fan of one of Cinemaware's first games, Defender of the Crown, you'd get a laugh out of the intro. The game starts up with the intro to DotC, then the Stooges walk in and make comments. Then you get the proper game intro :) The game hasn't necessarily aged well, but as a showcase for the Amiga when I was younger, this was one I'd always show my friends. I beat it many times - you could finish it in a nice cozy hour, so perfect for weekend play or basic downtime.
