I looked at the chart Joystiq created for the different control schemes. I wish they had done more trials though (they only did 3 per controller). They rated the Wii remote as the hardest control, but it would also have the biggest learning curve. I would hope that they spent a little time practicing with each control scheme first.
What I really want to know is how just the Wii Remote compares to Excite Truck's control (if it is mentioned in one of their other features, forgive me, because I don't have time to read them). If they are about the same, then Joystiq just isn't very good, as ExciteTruck's controls are very good. But if the Wii Remote control isn't as tight, it will be interesting to see how it performs.

One more thing. The differences in times weren't that great and there are so many variables that could impact your overall time by just a little bit so as to make it seem like one control scheme is better than another. Even in their setup explanation they state that they will be doing certain actions, like holding a powerslide until it hits orange, "if possible" which already suggest possible inconsistencies among racing styles with the different controls.
Overall it would appear that Nintendo did a fairly good job of making sure all the control schemes are about equal.

Meh, couldn't you just ducktape the Wiimote to a useless copy of "Escape from bug island"?
I guess the wii wheel would suffice...

No, but if you have a copy of Zack & Wiki and Elebits, you can duck tape it between those.

their is way too much wii wheel hate on game blogs. I plan on using the wheel, getting my golden wheel status, and even buying a 2nd one on launch day for people I play against (just not at gamestop).

I would agree also. The Wii Wheel would be my choice, though i could understand some people's distaste for it (especially racing fans who are used to those expensive, yet very stable wheels)
