Reimagine Metroid in 2D
We always have mixed feelings about sharing fanmade renditions of Nintendo IPs with readers. On the one hand, it would be a shame if things this awesome were kept hush hush, but on the other hand, should the buzz get too loud we know Nintendo won't hesitate to squash the project. In any case, since SR388's creator Von Richter is promoting the digg link, we're going to absolve ourselves from such moral dilemmas and spread the love.
The trailer makes this game look like a 2D Metroid reimagining rather than a remake based on any particular title, although some sprites (like Samus's) were clearly ripped. Between the music, original enemies, and intriguing new weapons and abilities, this fanmake has us licking our lips in anticipation. Hopefully we'll get to try it out before Nintendo comes knocking with a cease and desist, should that happen.
Fortunately, progress on the game seems to be going quickly. According to Von Richter himself, this trailer (which was released at the end of April) is already out of date.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a Metroid II remake actually... or there's another similar project out there.

Yeah, the Metroid at the end, and the planet it takes place on is indicative that it's a Metroid II remake. (At least, as much as Zero Mission was a Metroid remake.)

Is this the same Metroid II remake project that was posted a few months ago on this site or a sister site? This game is getting developed pretty fast!

That game looked like it was using all Zero Mission sprites, whereas this one looks like a combination of Super Metroid and new sprites. Granted they could have changed it since then, but I think this is a completely different project.

The Prime series is done but there still will be more Metroids, at least there better be.
Just don't expect another Phazon storyline/something with Dark Samus.

On if Nintendo squashes it, I dont think they can. People can do whatever they want with IP's if they are doing it for fun and not for profit. Nintendo has to prove that the creators are A.) Makeing a profit on it, or B.) that Nintendo is loseing profit do to less Metroid games sold, or C.) That this game represents the Metroid IP in a way that will damage it's reputation thusly reduceing current and future sales. If they can prove either of those, then they will have a case. Otherwise they will have to deal with it.

They've done it with Zelda fan creations in the past. I believe they can say that the Metroid IP is being damaged because the fan made game may have bugs, which may make people steer clear of Metroid games in the future. It's a stretch I know...

How did Square squash the Chrono Trigger resurrection project a few years back then? It surely wasn't going to hurt the series and certainly won't make them lose profit on a game series they obviously don't care about anymore.

I agree that companies HAVE stopped fan made creations. However I have not heard of a case that actually found itself in court, and if it ended up there it was not for any lengthy period of time. I suppose I was trying to say that they would have no legal basis that could hold up in court. However they do have the power of money and enough lawyers to flood ones mail box, and that would scare people off I suppose.
If any of those fan groups stood up to Nintendo I think those fans would have won based on Freedom of Speach.

Kudos to the sprite and environment artists, it's looking late snes era, and that was the best time for sprite and environment textures, Also I hope they use the engine (or at least an engine based on) from metroid Zero mission, the difference to controls from super metroid really makes the game alot better.
