Paul Barnett, EA Mythic's creative director, recently told CVG in an interview, "I think probably the best chance of someone doing [the first successful console MMO] is Nintendo."We're not here to argue whether he's right or completely bonkers, though. Imagine for a second that there would be no limitations on a Wii MMO, whether you fear friend codes, communication issues, Nintendo's paranoia, or what have you -- would you want an MMO on the Wii? If so, would you want it to be something Nintendo related (as in the likes of Pokémon or Animal Crossing), or would any type of game do?

I think a Pokemon MMO would be excellent, as long as it followed pretty much the same formula as the handheld games - just with more players. I suppose everyone would want voice chat, although that's never been a big concern of mine. The most important things would be to have a good trade and battle interface. It might also be cool if people could start to do different jobs, like being a breeder or a rancher or something. That might add some depth to an already deep game.

I don't know if I'm the only one who wants them to do something completely new. I think with their amazing level of creativity, Nintendo could do something mind-blowing that we have never seen before. I'm all for a Pokemon of Animal Crossing MMO, but really, we've had enough Pokemon to last us for a while, and as an MMO, I don't think AC would fare up too well.

Agreed. We have 50 million Pokemon games already, and sitting around in a town fishing all day or whatever in Animal Crossing wouldn't cut it. Make something NEW Nintendo! (If you make an MMO at all...)

I would prefer a Animal Crossing MMO above all. But, the only problem
that I see with it is that there isn't enough to do with it, after you
paid off your house, that's it. You hang out with friends, and that
spiffy and all, but there isn't much you can do with your friends
other than play "race to the digging spot"
But, as pickleman said, Nintendo needs something new; that's what I'm
hoping for myself. With Link's Crossbow Training just being a shooter work field for a hopefully new Nintendo franchise, I can only look towards the future and guess what Nintendo has in store.

If they ditched all the things that hold back their online system altogether, then they do have the factors to succeed on the same level as WoW. The console is relatively cheap, accessible, and has a solid user interface
I say SEGA should bring back PSO, all of it, Episodes 1,2, and 4 (since 3 was a different beast completely), then add a 5 and bring it to Wii
pretty please?

I think that Nintendo could have a very, very successful MMO on their hands if they set it in the Zelda Universe. Having several different races available (Hylian, Shiekah, Zoro, Goron, Deku Scrub, Kokiri, Twili, Gerudo to name a few from the ever-expanding Zelda Universe) with different strengths and weaknesses would add a lot to the game.
A Pokemon MMO would be the same thing as the current Hand held versions. It would just mean you wouldn't have to be right next to someone to trade or battle, or need a friend code. Aside from that, it would just be the same thing over.
Applying an MMO status to a Zelda game would change a lot of things. More Sandbox-styled play, different areas for each race, different abilities, weapons, armor, magic, quests, dungeons, etc.
A Zelda MMO would be highly successful whether or not it was designed properly. Zelda fanboys would eat it up, but, if it's designed well, even non-gamers could be dragged in. Just look at World of Warcraft. I know plenty of people who play that have never even picked up a console controller or hand held before.

The thing about a Zelda MMO is that the Zelda universe isn't big enough yet. They can expand and recreate Hyrule and Termina all they want, it still won't be big enough for an MMO.

There's plenty of space within the Zelda universe.
Besides, they never use the same Hyrule twice. If they were designing an MMO, they would be designing a Hyrule for that many players, likely with a boat or something to a Termina designed for that many players as well.
It's not hard to expand upon Hyrule. Gerudo Desert can be huge, the castle can be expanded, Death Mountain can be made bigger, Lake Hylia could be made gigantic, Kakariko Village, again, can be expanded.
The Zelda universe is big enough for an MMO because it's ever evolving and changes each time they use it.
So, they'll obviously be changing it to fit that many people if they ever do a Zelda MMO.

The Wii definately has a chance of producing a successful MMO. We've been hearing rumors of an Animal Crossing one for some time now. The Wii definately has the potential to create a good MMO game.
But I'd have to take issue with the statement that they, Nintendo, are the "most likely" to produce the first successful console MMO. Not with their track record with online gaming thus far. Not a chance.

Animal Crossing as MMO would be ace. I wonder, though; with so many people, where would they all gather? They can't all be in one village. And what if it was region locked? It would eliminate the point.

I try to avoid mixing racism into my gaming.
Actually, if Nintendo actually made an online game where you could communicate with people, they'd probably be the company to really crack down on that kind of crap. That'd be awesome. It'd be like Xbox Live where you weren't assaulted by homophobes constantly.

Yeah, I'd be willing to wait if Nintendo could somehow make a good system for chat. But, I don't think many XBot fratboys would be playing Animal Crossing. Not enough killing. Or death. Or gunnage.

I dunno if this is just me and a coupla my buddies, but I think it would be pretty sweet if Ninty made a Zelda MMO, kinda like WoW (or ES4:Oblivion gone MMO-style) only in the Hyrule universe. You could make a custom character (Zora, Human, Goron, etc...) and class, be good or evil and do quests and all that other crap that makes MMO's ultimate time-wasters. I dunno... Am I the only one here that thinks that'd be cool?

Animal Crossing is a semi-MMO cause you can bring 3 other players in your town over wi-fi(In AC:WW of course)
I think a PokeMMOn would be great and all Nintendo would have to do is allow tons of people around instead of NPC trainers.

I think a Pokemon MMO would be awesome. It should be in like full 3D even the battles in fact when battling you should be able to actually control your Pokemon you know make them run around to dodge and send attacks and stuff thatd be neat. also the whole map and the world would have to be ALOT bigger then the usual world like on the handhelds. Another neat thing it could include all the regions the pokemon has been set in ya know like Kanto and Johto that'd be neat. So many ideas for it. omg I should tell Nintendo my ideas.
or a WoW MMO but the Wii probably wouldn't be able to process so much data.

Man so many ideas are running through my head.

Well I've looked over these comments, and for a Wii MMO, there would need to be a few things done before it became feasible.
1. Friend Codes= GONE:
Friend Codes are nice and all at times, and I understand that Nintendo just wants to avoid lawsuits, but to even have a chance at an MMO, this will have to go.
2.Pay to play:
We know Nintendo knows how to do something like this. Look at the Wii Shop, and in fact I think that running subscriptions for the MMORPGS will be possible through the Shop Channel. This is one of the least of my concerns, something I know ol' Ninty can do.
3.More storage:
This one is obvious. For an MMO to even have a chance, there MUST be a harddrive. This is because..
4.Updated Content:
Anyone who has played an MMORPG knows that to keep into the game, there needs to be dynamic updates, and fresh content or it gets easy to get bored. And with a lack of a harddrive, there isn't much space to place these updates. And With the USB slots on the back of the Wii, there isn't much of a problem, it just needs to be done.
5. Fresh Franchise:
Sure. I love Mario, and in fact there is no game franchise I love more than him. But I'm sure if they were to delve into this, they would be better off creating a new franchise rather than fitting a game of this sort around an old one. I know with World Of Warcraft it angered quite a few of the original Warcraft fans, since it altered their lore enough, and I know that people would be pretty angry if everyone and their mother saved the princess and killed Bowser to farm for his loot. I know for sure that the creative minds at Nintendo can create a new franchise and I expect nothing less from them.
I can already assume that such a prospect like this will be innovative, knowing that is one of the key fundamentals that Nintendo likes to follow, and if it were to set off, it would in fact print money for them. Just my two cents.

EverQuest: Online Adventures for the PS2 didn't need a hard drive, and still had updates (not to the extent of new maps (although they did have at least one expansion), but they had bug-fix updates that were stored to the memory card). Yes, a HDD would be nice, whether they were doing an MMO or not. But it's definitely not NEEDED for an MMO.

You can also look at games like, once again, PSO, which made itself dynamic through the staggered release of online-event-only items that were on the disc, but not available through any channel in the program. It also stayed dynamic through direct-to-RAM Quests, that kept the game quite interesting for some time.

Nintendo should purpose HAL with creating an MMOG. I think setting it in the Smash Bros. reality would be the best course of action since it encompasses SO MUCH of the Nintendo product line. I think though that the view should be switched to a traditional MMORPG kind of P.O.V. (i.e. over the shoulder floating cam) I think the release should be far enough from SSBB that no one could be dissapointed by potential for players jumping ship from one game to the other..... but then I think the gameplay should be more geared towards an action RPG style, as opposed to the smash games.
Miis should be the newb character avatars, but there should be accessories that will change the outside look of any player to potentially make them look like any individual thing from the respective different worlds. In the end it should look maybe akin to a kingdom hearts game, only with HAL and Nintendo characters and settings ( maybe some Sega and uhhh... Konami stuff thrown in for fun.)

Oh another idea just popped into my head.
yes I've been writing my ideas down btw of my ideas.
an entire Mii MMO (MMMO)
or like Polecat said, a Smash Bros MMO, except no a side scrolling stuff, a whole entire world of the entire universe of Nintendo the center of the world map could just be a plane simple smash bros related world but take the character of your choice say you go west youd be in an entire Mario universe or go east youd be in the Zelda universe. I dunno I guess youd have to get inside my head to figure it all out.

Well pokemon fans with MMO's possible coming to Wii well lets look here i think that a Pokemon MMO is more possible than people think. Well just look at this website and you possibly see what im am talking about.
http://nnooo.com/games/licenses.html
Oh and for the zelda idea well why isn't it big enough. I think it is. Of course on wii they are going to limit the number of people on each server so it wont lag as much. Come on you know nintendo. They lag alot so if they are going to make it sucessful then they are going to have to have lots of servers that limit the number of people or there is going to be major lag.
Well if they make the Pokemon MMO then I hope it is good. I have been waiting for a Pokemon MMO for a long time. And for the Zelda MMO it would be a great idea too. I hope they make one of each so everyone is happy. And for the Animal Crossing Fans i hope you get your MMO too.

I don't see why they couldn't just do a Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles MMO... I enjoyed the first one on the gamecube and I have it on the DS... I was thinking of downloading "my life as king"... I think it would do great... there are plenty of classes and different types of characters to pick from... I also think that they could do a Ragnarok or something...
