My 4-year-old has been a Super Mario Brothers addict thanks to the Wii VC. He even studies run through videos on YouTube and has me make CDs for the car with the music from Super Mario Brothers levels.
I know he's only 4, but I still cringe at the end of each Original Super Mario Brothers level when he runs off the top of the stair case and settles for 400 points on the flag.
Maybe we'll tackle the dash-then-jump technique this week.

My Kids aren't old enough to play games yet, but I have invested in their future heavily. When they get old enough, they will inherit an atari 5200, Magnavox Oddysey, an original nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Playstation 2, and a Wii, all with a minimum of 20 games each. As my kids get older, they will get a newer system. I'll let my oldest start with the Atari and Magnavox oddysey, and every so often, let her get a new system to play.

The Odyssey? Woah! My inherited/non collection includes (Inherited) Atari 2600, (Inherited) Genesis, (Bought from neigbor) Dreamcast, (Gamestop used) 60 gb PS3/2/0, (Launch Day!) Wii/Gamecube, (Inherited) Gameboy, (Friend's) Gameboy Color, and soon to join them is a N64, SNES, NES, and Saturn. Maybe a new Gamecube, but just to Paint it and sell it for a higher price.

My brother just turned seven. I've raised him on Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Pokemon. I'm surprised that so many people seem to hold to the idea that younger players won't even consider 2D games. Isn't there quite a sizable number of 2D games on the Game Boy Advance and the DS...? Even those who grew up with the N64 had Game Boys and Game Boy Colors which are pretty much portable NES systems. I've never had any problems getting my younger brother to play older games, and his friends are equally happy to do so. My brother is actually pissed off with me right now because I won't let him play my old Pokemon Red cartridge for fear that he'll lose it. He has Oracle of Ages though (which I've never yet found at a GameStop myself).
So yeah, I've got my little brother playing a few Virtual Console games but he's primarily interested in playing games from particular series regardless of their age.

I play a lot of Nintendo games. I think this is the reason that my kids are only mildly interested in games as they get older. When you've got all the new games at home on release date, and Dad plays games quite a bit, I think the children just aren't as enthralled by them.
The kids who don't own a console, or aren't allowed to play games... those are the ones who just get addicted to videogames once they're finally allowed to play them.

Now that I think about it, now would be a good time to get friends who share my Wii hooked on old games. Being a bit older than some of my friends who grew up on the N64, I should really hook them on to the good ol' 16 bit games of my youth.
Ah, memories...
