We're often critical of some of the children's games released on the Wii (one reason being, perhaps, that we're not the target market, but mostly because just how many pet sims do we really need for one console?). Crave seems to be taking a different route this time, though -- one that we can actually respect -- by coming out with Defendin' De Penguin, a real-time strategy game for kids. You can see this idea realized in the trailer above.
In the title, you are trying to protect a penguin village from wolves and other vicious animals who keep eating the town's fish supply. The focus on cute penguins and (we assume) the difficulty are what makes this game "kiddie," but we still like the idea of a niche genre being developed for children. Considering that vein of thought, what other uncommon genres do you think should be made into kids game? Of course, we might like to see a few more RTS games geared toward us on the Wii, too, if that's not too much to ask.
As for Defendin' De Penguin, it releases later this month for both the Wii and DS.

I'd like to see some RPGs genuinely developed for really young kids. Not with gameplay and writing that feels dumbed down for kids, but encourages them to improve their reading and game skills. A Dr. Seuss of the RPG world, if you will.

Actually just making a Dr. Seuss RPG that capitalized on those concepts would be completely rad.

How about... Grand Theft Power Wheels?
No but seriously, a kid's RTS... It could be pretty cool. I mean, I personally have problems with most RTSs...They're just to complicated for me, and I don't feel like spending hours learning how to play them, so maybe *I* could enjoy this game, too, haha.

Oh no, by all means, continue. It's a good movie and a good reference.

Candace, this Hudsuckery is getting played out. How's about "real time strategy for little Lebowski urban achievers" or "real time strategy--[MAKE GAMES FOR MY] BABY, YOU WARTHOG FROM HELL! Are they good? No. But I'm just trying to get the ball rolling.

So, why are they calling a Tower Defense game RTS? Well, it looks like... most TDs I've seen. Except for the fact that... there's penguins. And I bet kids prefer to stun seals and polar bears by launching penguins from towers at them rather than killing evil monsters, right? And how does a stunned animal "fade away" anyway? ...now I want to play a TD.

People really need to stop making these things for kids. They'll get addicted to it. I know 8 year olds that are pretty good at Gears of War and then I see this? Psh.

Sorry, I don't think I was clear enough on that. I'm tired. I meant that these people shouldn't attempt to make games for kids because most of them are people without kids of their own, and they don't understand what kids like.

Ecolis/Ecoris came out a while back, that's probably pretty darn close to a "RTS for kids" game, and um .. it just didn't control that well. Likewise Final Fantasy Revenant Wings; I just wonder if the DS really wasn't meant for RTSes.
