We haven't highlighted many sports games at E3 (unless you count Wii Sports Resort), but NHL: 2K9 is different, as it's the first legitimate hockey game to hit Nintendo's console. We are some very hockey-starved individuals, so we're keeping a cautious eye on this one. You can see a little bit of the game for yourselves in the demo above, and maybe we're just easy to please, but we like what we've seen so far.
Ignoring the fact that the 2K rep is blatantly (and unconvincingly) reading a script, we appreciate some of the features he highlighted. Getting into fights sounds like fun (and makes us wistful for the days of Mutant League Hockey), as well as the simple but clever Zamboni driving. Seriously, who's never wanted to drive a Zamboni? At least we'll sort of get the chance now, even if it has to be through virtual means.
The rep also takes special care to mention the Wii game and its controls, which he says are simple but work well (as you hold the Wiimote like a hockey stick). Sounds good to us.

After Top Spin 3 and MLB, it's safe to say 2K lineup for Wii sucks. Excluding MLB Power Pros, but that's basically a PS2 game, so, it doesn't count.

I think that hockey is too fast a sport for a PES-style system. I don't think most people would be able to keep up with things enough to have PES-like control.
Ever since the Wii was revealed I was excited for the possibilities for hockey. With the nunchuk moving your player and the Wiimote being the stick (twist it for a wrist shot, snap it for a slap shot, etc.) it will be incredible if it is done right. That is how I envisioned it anyway, and I'm pumped to see how it turns out.
And yes, I'm Canadian. Do Americans even care about hockey anymore? Tiger Woods doesn't think so, and neither does EA Sports, apparently, judging from the lack of a Wii port of their title.

Do Americans care about hockey???
I grew up in Florida and live in Georgia, and I play street hockey 3 times a week. Best sport in the world. Ever.
The closest thing the Wii has to a hockey game right now is Mario Strikers, which I love. 2K9 had better bring it, cos I'm starved for a real hockey game on the Wii. I hear EA won the 2008 hockey game race pretty handily, so I'm concerned.

That guy sounds like a tool.
It's worth a rental to test out - if my non-hardcore gaming friends can pick it up and play it that means I have a better chance of finding someone willing to play it with me (and not have to teach them 5 million buttons)

Graphics don't look too bad. MLB2k8 was god awful, saying it had ps2 graphics would be an insult to the ps2
