After that sexy Nintendo Power cover (check it out again after the break) and a pretty
legit-sounding scenario,
Sonic and the Black Knight is now confirmed as a Wii-exclusive title. Some guy on the official SEGA message boards "
confirmed" it was real, but offered no details beyond waiting for the official page on sega.com. So, like the genius detectives we are, a short investigation of the official page turned up
this information.
The game takes place in a "storybook world of Arthurian legend," with Sonic wielding a sword to do battle with various ne'er-do-wells in medieval times. Not much else is explained beyond that, but we'll keep you posted on any updates to the official page. Stick around and
Sonic will thank you.

This is a great idea. Like making Sonic into a werewolf. Or giving Shadow his own game and guns.

uh to tell you the truth shadow the hedgehog was a very poor game. I mean, why does shadow need a gun, he's got chaos emerald. anyway i think this is a new step for the sonic team. its games seem greater then before. it was dark days for the sonic team when they made sonic heroes on gamecube and then the other two game, shadow and sonic riders, but i think there doing better now. GO SONIC TEAM!!!

Hear that? The gaming society just let out a collective groan. Please Sega, if you have a heart Sonic will die at the end of this game, just so we don't have to endure any more franchise-tarnishing pieces of trash.

He'll probably be revived by some other dodgy princess human. If he's going to be revived by anyone, let it be another furry, at least!

If it's a Secret Rings sequel (and judging by the logo, it is), color me excited, sword or not. I really liked Secret Rings, for the most part.

When I read the headline, the first image that came to mind was Sonic and Batman. I know, he's the dark not black knight, but still the possibilities.

There's a reason that Mario doesn't tread into this territory of stale... Nintendo has an inkling more dignity for their mascot. SEGA, unless this game is all 1:1 first person sword fights I'm staying the hell away.

I have a feeling that if this was a Mario game there wouldn't be nearly as much cynicism. The press, and fanboys, would probably call the decision inspired, innovative, a great reinvention, or some other marketing buzzword.
Which is quite unfair seeing as there has only one poor 3D Sonic game - Sonic 360; and one mediocre game - Shadow the Gunslinger. The rest of the Sonic games have been competent to outstanding.
And Sonic Adventure 2 is still the greatest 3D platformer of all time.

First of all, you're probably right about the whole Mario thing. But thats for a reason. Nintendo makes sure that Mario stays out of mediocre titles, so when Nintendo announces a Mario game, regardless of its content, everyone is excited. The only Mario titles that have fallen even a little flat in the last decade are a few of the sports titles (Sluggers, etc), and even those a great time - they just aren't up to par with games like Super Mario Galaxy.
Sonic, on the other hand, at this point has a reputation for starring in absolutely awful games. You have lived a very sheltered life if you think that Sonic 360 is the only sub-par Sonic game. The failures started with the abomination that was Sonic 3D Blast, and from there we started seeing such atrocities as Sonic Heroes, Sonic Riders, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic and the Secret Rings, and the Sonic Adventure series. Some of these games have redeeming qualities, yes. I happened to quite enjoy exactly 1/5 of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 - the 1/5 that Sonic and Shadow starred in. Because they were straight running, platforming, Sonic-y goodness. The majority of the game, however, focused on finding lost emeralds, shooting at enemies from a giant robot, and...fishing. For God's sake, FISHING.
Sonic Rush (and its sequel) is the only halfway decent Sonic game to come out in the past while, and thats because they didn't include guns, swords, or furry pals that nobody likes. It was just Sonic and a character that played just like Sonic. Running.
If this were some other developer and some other franchise, then maybe it would be excusable. But this is a developer who used to seriously contend with Nintendo, and a character who was their main means for doing so.

Sonic Adventure 2 is *not* the greatest 3D platformer of all time. Not by a long shot. It is fun, though.

A mere difference of opinion. I wouldn't call Sonic Adventure 2 the best 3D platformer ever
I would call it 3rd best, behind Mario Galaxy and Mario 64
But jeez, John B, you don't need to go around telling me why i'm wrong and why one of mine (and Nigeria's) favorite franchises totally sucks nard

@ Mr Khan
Why don't you read what he has to say instead of insulting him. Someone expressed their opinion then he calmly expressed his, then you call him a nard just because you disagree... See what's wrong with that?

Except for the fact that Johnny B. wasn't exactly calm and he presented his opinions almost without having room for dissension (why not post about Nigeria having a right to his opinion?).
That, and Mr Khan didn't call anyone a "nard"; as I read it, he was talking about Johnny's comment which describe the Sonic franchise as "sucking nard" in Khan's paraphrasing.

My bad, John B., not Johnny. I appologize for that, especially if you're one of those people who can't stand being called Johnny. I'm not really sure why I wrote Johnny. . . . Sorry, again.

Fuck yeah. Secret Rings 2 here we come!
Deliver it this holiday season to officially cram it full of Sonic goodness: Unleashed, Black Knight, and Chronicles DS
Though i doubt SEGA would let it compete with their seminal Unleashed project, so i'm going to say that this will probably come out in a similar timeframe as The Conduit

Bad move, Sega. First, you sent Sonic to old Arabia in Secret Rings, and now you're sending him to the Middle Ages. What's next, the Civil War or ancient Rome?
Don't start to become predictable before you actually do get predictable.

Ok, Sonic needs to be put down now! Sega, you lost the console war with Nintendo, stop trying to revitalize a dead franchise, the last good Sonic game was Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Now, honestly, your giving him a SWORD!? Seems like your copying Zelda now, this game will FAIL! I'll stick with playing Mario Galaxy thank you....

I've gotta agree with the other people that cite Sonic and the Secret Rings - it was a love/hate game and I loved it. I don't really feel like we need something that's exactly the same, but another unique attempt to use the wiimote to create a new way to play a game certainly catches my interest. The only problem is... if it is sword-based gameplay, I don't think that will mesh well as a Sonic game. SatSR did a great job of translating the speed of Sonic into new gameplay (once you got leveled up enough to get some real speed, anyway) but sword fighting... I don't see it.
On the other hand, since I do think it's a sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings, it might just share the same gameplay. In which case, it would be less intriguing, but could benefit from a lot more polish and more focussed level design (NO MORE "walk slowly through a series of traps" levels for the love of Big the Cat!)

SEGA get a lot of hate, but they aren't affraid to build a big name game around Wii specific mechanics. I applaud to them for this (same as for Konami --> Pro Evo Soccer).
I hope this reaches Secret Rings in terms of quality.

Imagine how cool it would be if Sega just made a new (good) game called "The Black Knight" with no Sonic. I would totally give them MAD PROPS. Sega is so boring.

Okay, I was just thinking of how the Sonic franchise really needs its own Mega Man 9. How awesome would a return to the almost-wordless, high-octane Sonic games of yesterday be? Pretty dang awesome, that's how awesome.
This looks like Sonic and the Secret Rings gone a bit northwest of its previous location.

Johnny B. Sonic Riders, Heroes, and the Adventure games (lol at you mentioning ADVENTURE) are all decent games. Atrocities belong to 06 and 06 alone.
For the most part, you sound like another purist.

Also, Sonic needs to use the nunchuck to move around. Running with the nunchuck and slashing with the Motion-Plussed Wiimote as you ran, without stopping or slowing down? That sounds like fun.
They could even use the same movement setup as SSX Blur; the analog stick makes small turns, while actually turning the nunchuck makes big turns, and doing both at the same time makes for sharper turns.

i have to say at least sega is being gutsy with sonic unlike nintendo with mario the most out there they went is slapping a water pack on him and that was interesting but failed and they haven't really been gutsy with mario since cuz their afraid of the fire to me its starting to become boring and galaxy has too many places that look the same i got bored of it from that i hope sega keeps being gutsy cuz it brings out new ways to play as sonic instead of the same get to the goal as ast as you can stuff over and over again that would have kiled sonic faster i think and i love sonic games
