Wii Warm Up: Tribute act
An easter egg. A tribute. An in-joke.
Whatever you want to call them, the secret costumes that are available in Fatal Frame IV got us thinking again about the sly nods to other titles and secret touches that appear in so many games. You know the sort of thing we mean: the Chris Houlihan room in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The Mount Rushmore trick in Pilotwings 64. The pictures of Mario, Luigi, and Bowser that hang in Hyrule Castle. We love this stuff, partially because we're shameless nerds, but also because it serves as a kind of in-joke between the developer and more knowing players.
Tons of games contain these secrets, but what's your absolute favorite videogame easter egg? Try and keep it to Wii games (or at least Nintendo software), and avoid the obvious (such as Yoshi's appearance in Super Mario 64) if possible. The more obscure, the better!

Remember when Snake entered the Brawl, that was pretty obscure. As was Sonic's entry. And I guess everybody here knows the birthday ding on the Nintendo DS. Umm, I'm no good at this stuff, sorry.

In Super Paper Mario, one of the first bosses, a big red robotic dragon, starts to malfunction and quotes Zelda II: "I AM ERROR!"

Also, when the dragon says I AM ERROR in Paper Mario, in its eye is the WiiShopChannel loading symbol

Is it just me or did anyone else noticed that Valoo from Windwaker was just a tad bit identical to Hooktail in Paper Mario: TTYD?

Speaking of Pilotwings 64, when the hell will they release it for the VC? It's been mostly random crap lately. I haven't bought anything in over a year. I'd kill for the N64 version or the SNES original. Hook it up Nintendo!

Definitely the inclusion of Hadouken and Shoryuken in the Mega Man X games. You even had to input the attack the same way!
Here's hoping that they put one of them into Mega Man 9.

In Paper Mario & PM:TYD, if you jumped into a certain item, you could turn into 8-bit Mario(Partner would also turn 8-bit in TYD).

My favorite is probobly the NiGHTS into Dreams mini game unlockable in Billy Hatcher for GameCube.
Second is when you meet all of the Konami characters like Sparkster, Simon Belmont, etc. inside the club in Snatcher.

I enjoyed when, in Super Paper Mario, you became a giant 8-bit Mario. I also liked doing this as other characters--8-bit Bowser, 8-bit Peach, and 8-bit Luigi.
Oh, and when the Koopa did it, too. That was funny.
(The Paper Mario series has a lot of little homages. It's just part of the series.)

Samus in bed in Super Mario RPG.
And I guess I'll mention the Pac-Man pin on Klonoa's hat, and then further mention Presea's Klonoa costume in Tales of Symphonia.

PSO for GameCube was teeming with them. One of the items, entitled Egg Cannon, had the description of being "A device used by a genius once trying to conquer the world"
They also had hidden chaos, and the Samba Maracas weapon
Otherwise, i can't really think of much.

In Conker's Bad Fur Day on N64, you can see Banjo's head on the wall in the pub (main menu). You can also see Kazooie as an umbrella in the options menu (If I recall). Also in Banjo-Tooie, when you see Bottle's son carrying a DK plushie, the Jet Force Gemini posters in his other son's room, and the DK magnet on the fridge in the Grunty Industries level.

In Donkey Kong Country 2 for the SNES, when you see the screen with the rankings based on how many DK coins you got (I think, I can't remember), next to the trash can on the right are the shoes of Sonic the Hedgehog and the laser of Earthworm Jim. One of my favorites.

I enjoyed all of the secret messages from the development team (Iwata, Miyamoto, etc) when you input the codes in Samus's ship in MP3:C.
Here's an obscure one: when you zoom in on Wii Sports Bowling, the sound effect is the same as it was in SM64 when switching to 1st person mode. I'm not sure if they reused the sound effect for Zelda or SMG, but every time I zoom in I think of my first days with the N64 and that great game.

Here you go.
1.) No More Heroes:
Three of the luchador masks, in Spanish, in order, translate as "Flower, Sun, and Rain", another game by Suda51.
2.) Super Mario Galaxy:
I'm actually not entirely convinced which this references. In the Space Junk Galaxy there's an abandoned space craft. While this is said to be Olimar's ship "The Dolphin" from Pikmin 1, it also bears a striking resemblance to the surprise Space Ship in Super Mario Bros. 2 which, at first appearing as a veggie sprout, would appear and lift your character into another part of the level when you plucked it.
3.) Super Smash Brothers Melee.
The in-between area in All-Star mode, while having music reminiscent of the Kirby boss gauntlet, has visuals that are a sly nod to Shigeru Miyamoto's excellent puzzler, Mole Mania for the Gameboy. The area matches the 'rest areas' in Muddy's adventure that are populated with trees, tiles, benches, streetlamps, and heart containers that look suspiciously akin to the Legend of Zelda heart containers.

I think it was in Kirby and the amazing mirror that Master Hand and Crazy Hand from Smash bros were a boss and defeating them gave Kirby his attacks that he uses in smash bros

Link and Samus in Super Mario RPG, In the same game, you can turn into 8-bit Mario in Booster's Tower [Only in one room, but with the original music, and when you walk into a door, you run behind the curtain to turn back to RPG's Mario]. There are many others easter eggs in that game.
Also there were Mario paintings in Zelda Ocarina of Time, in Hyrule Castle, where you meet Zelda.
