Oh Rare. Do you honestly expect us to believe this? Nonetheless, it's their story and they're sticking to it.
The fine folks behind that Banjo & Kazooie business have commented that Avatars are not an attempt to copy the lovable Miis from Nintendo. Head of art, Lee Musgrave, says "It was an idea we had, even before Miis were part of the gaming scene, of putting these characters that you have an affinity with, not necessarily as part of the Xbox dash, but somewhere in the Xbox that you would play multiple games with, that you would have multiple experiences with that same character."
Musgrave further added that "Microsoft did not turn up one day in a speeding car and say, 'They've got Miis - do something!' It wasn't like that at all; it was something that fell into place over a period of time." But was that period of time really the year the Xbox 360 was on the market before Wii's arrival? We're not sure we're willing to swallow the red pill on that one.

"They've got Miis -- do something!"
In all honesty, that would've made a charming dish for Rare to feed us. I'd feel much more sympathetic in lieu of ... nothing actually.

Yeah, they can say this all they want... More than likely, they had some idea like "damn, it would be nice to customize the look of characters across games, but it isn't worth our time or money."
Then, after Nintendo started using Miis in their commercials at the launch of the Wii, it _became_ worth their time and money.
Nintendo still wins. Rare, you need to suck it up and release Goldeneye 007 on VC...

According to Wikipedia Mii's have been in development since the Famicom Disk System so they could've easily been copied still..

Miyamoto had the idea to do them forever, but never felt the technology was up to snuff to create them. So Rare is being a turd here. Ever since the Stampers left Rare has been useless.

i lol'd. but yeah they are so full of crap. all they have ever done is copy other companies, they are the 'me too' of the electronic side of life. ipod comes out, suddenly microsoft bring out zune. HD DVD fails, all of a sudden microsoft are bringing out a blu ray player for the 360. motion sensing control, well you lot know that one already, and now its this. long story short microsoft SUCK! i reject them and everything they stand for, the unoriginal copycat B*STARDS

I don't like MS either, but you're completely off your rocker:
MS had a tilt sensing controller long before Sony or Nintendo. Look up the "SideWinder Freestyle".
The Zune was certainly an attempt to compete with the iPod, but unlike the iPod, the device's UI doesn't suck ass (although, unfortunately, it's still every bit as locked-down as the iPod, which is why I don't use either).
About the BluRay player, first, that's still just rumors, second, well yea, of course they're going to. HDDVD died, why in the would *wouldn't* they switch to BluRay? That's not copying, that's just basic common sense.
And although you didn't mention it, one of the biggest "copycat" accusations against MS is always Windows stealing from Mac. But, of course Apple themselves just stole it all from Xerox, so who the hell cares? (And now these days the ultra-popular-among-MS-haters Linux is "stealing" a lot from both Windows and Mac, so again, who cares?).
Don't get me wrong, I don't like MS either (Already own a Wii, and I'll get a PS3 long before I get a 360), but if you're going to bash a company, at least have the decency to use reasons that actually make sense.

Avatars/Miis are far too trivial for them to have been in *active* development all this time. There's no way it would have taken this long.
The truth that Rare is undoubtedly twisting around is most likely that MS had been kicking around the idea of avatars before the 360 was launched (easy to believe, I mean the idea had been floating around *everyone's* heads way back when VRML was considered the "future" of the internet), but then decided against it until they saw how successful the Wii ended up being.

tbh i just felt like going on a rant, and i did lol
but lets get one thing right here, nintendo WAS the first company to create the idea of incorporating Mii like avatars into gaming, but it was'nt feasible 20 years ago.
microsoft seems like the kind of company that refuses to create an original idea, or take a creative risk (i will let them off for HD DVD, i mean it did die horribly, but the blu ray thing is only logical, moaning about them getting it after sony was part of my rant :P), either because they dont have any, or because they are too scared to until they see that its making a shedload of money (i would like to say the first, but i think its the second really) and now they have their fingers in all the pies, to everyone's irritation.
its not really the 'who did it first' thing im annoyed about, i mean look at PSN, XBLA, and WiiWare. none of those services were the first to do such a thing, because Sega were, and no one cares. its just that microsoft will have this whole 'Look at us! we got these things too!' aura about them, which irritates me. look at their press conference at E3 and tell me im lying (whew, hope i made sense there, because that crap's far too long to proofread!)
btw, i checked the sidewinder you were talking about, but couldn't find proper information for it. am i correct in thinking that its more similar to the SIXAXIS?

Fair enough :)
"sidewinder [freestyle]...am i correct in thinking that its more similar to the SIXAXIS?"
As I remember it, yes (but for PC instead of a console, of course) Although I honestly can't recall if it used an accelerometer or gyroscope, so I'm not sure if it was also sensitive to shaking. Personally, I always felt it was somewhat ahead of it's time. I was really rooting for it. But it died a rather quick and silent death, victim of the classic chicken-egg problem.

Two years since the Wii launched and you're just about ready with your version of Miis? Something you'd been working on before we knew all about Nintedo's? Okaaaay.

BULLSHIT!!! The home console avatar incorperated in games was NOT rares idea they shamelessly took it from Nintendo and are only digging a deeper hole by bringing it up again.

Sorry Rare, Even this we not be better than miis, Nintendo did this first i'm afraid. Microsoft seems to have run outta ideas and figured wii owners wouldn't LMFAO!!! Come on now Rare admit you were wrong, honestly i wish Rare would go back to Nintendo and recreate some of the old magic in their games. Since being with MS, games made by Rare have been mediocre at best.

Rare started dying soon BEFORE leaving Nintendo. Remember Star Fox Adventures? And Kameo started as a GC game. I'd love to see Rare return to making games that don't suck, but even a return to Nintendo won't fix that.
Though I have to admit they have done ONE good thing since then: "It's Mr. Pants" for the GBA ('Course, that was started before they left Nintendo, but then, it wouldn't have been nearly as funny and charming if it ended up being the generic Donkey Kong themed game it was originally going to be.)

OH OH I KNOW THIS ONE! you know why rare will never make classic games again? because anyone who was involved in the amazing games they made for nintendo arent with them anymore, including dr do they are free radical now. so unless there is a merger (which i highly doubt) then there may never be a game of goldeneye or perfect dark quality from rare again. especially with microsoft at the helm, it seems like they have less creative control, i mean when was the last time they brought out a game? and the next game they bring out will be one to showcase the 360s motion control

@ChromeAlchemist: Everyone says that, but it bugs the hell out of me. It's just not true. The talent didn't leave and form Free Radical. The talent just simply evaporated from *all* of them when Free Radical split off. Free Radical has been doing absolutely nothing but Goldeneye/PerfectDark rehashes (usually under the new name "Timesplitters"). They've spent the last ten years just simply rehashing that same damn Goldeneye game (sans the Bond license) over and over and over again. They're no better than Rare itself.

The entire concept of Avatars is so freaking OLD, it's unbelievable. Ever read Snow Crash or Neuromancer?
Heck, the term Avatar itself is ancient Hindu for a manifestation of a god onto our plane of existence. The entire Hindu philosophy has tons of thought behind multiple planes of existence... making it even more relevant in a computer-centric world, where there is a separation between you in reality and your virtual presence elsewhere.
And, of course, let's not forget computer games where you have a "character". Or even before that, pen-and-paper role playing games.
Miis, Avatars, whatever. Definitely NOT an original idea by any stretch, and certainly not something to get your dainy little panties into a twist about.
