The bad news is that Nintendo seems to have decided to release the game there under a different, less mellifluous title than the US version: Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City. For those of you in Australia, we don't wish to spoil the game for you, but the "city" is where folk reside.
Is there some regional difference we aren't aware of? Does the word "folk" have a negative connotation in Australian English?

As an Australian; 'Folk' holds no negative connotation (apart from a slight 'hick' vibe to it, though I don't think that's exclusive to Australia). It's not exactly part of the everyday vernacular, not that that should matter.
I quite liked 'City Folk' :(.

I believe in Australia the word 'folk' is racist, sexist and homophobic.
In seriousness, I have no folking idea. In all my years of enjoying classic Aussie soap-operas Neighbours and Home and Away I've never discovered that the word folk was a problem.

Probably just an aesthetic choice, like how Japan is rocking with Wario Land: The Shake Dimension, which sounds like a Sci-Fi game, and we get Wario Land: Shake It! Which sounds like some kinda dumb rhythm game

I live in Australia and I've had to experience nonsense like this a lot lately from Nintendo.
Here Flash Focus is called sight training.
Donkey Kong barrel blast is called jet race.
And Brain age is called brain training.
I think "Let's go to the city" sounds ridiculous and we say folk around here all the time.

Urgh, u guys should be lucky to get the full title. Europeans and Australians always get the most accurate translation of the original Japanese title. US-citizens on the other hand are regarded as retards who can't handle long titles so all the games get shortened, easy to remember titles. So yes, US gets flashy short catchy titles but only because they're looked upon as dumbasses while we, Europeans and Australians are expected to be able to handle those freakishly long BUT original translations! So stop moaning, be happy!
