This week, Japanese gamers can spend 800 Wii Points to make their Wii pretend to be a Super Famicom pretending to be a circa-1978, 8080-based arcade board. How meta! Despite the outrageous antiquity of Space Invaders, it remains fun to play, and that infernal soundtrack climbs into the brain like those disgusting worm things from Star Trek II, but in kind of a good way. In any case, The Original Game is more of a remake than a port, with a new 2-player mode accompanying a faithful recreation. Also on the VC: Falcom's side-scrolling ARPG Sorcerian and Taito's adorable Bobble-like platformer Liquid Kids.
- Space Invaders: The Original Game (Super Famicom, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
- Sorcerian (Mega Drive, 1 player, 700 Wii Points)
- Mizubaku Adventure (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)
- Kappa-kun to Asobou: Kappa-kun to Mori no Nakamatachi (1 player, 600 Wii Points)

Even if it is a "retro remake" rather than pure emulation, I hope this is a precursor to bringing things like the original arcade versions of Donkey Kong and Galaga to the Virtual Console. In addition to being squished, the NES versions are missing levels, graphics, and just don't sound or play the same.

I don't care if it's a classic or for the Super Famicom, $8 is too much for Space invaders.

I'll eagerly pay 20 bucks for Space Invades Extreme on the DS, so 8 bucks for a faithful adaptation of the original with a new two-player mode seems totally reasonable to me.
If it were just a straight emulation of the original, probably 5 bucks would be my limit. It's not like I haven't bought it many times over already. You probably have to be over 30 for that to seem like a good deal, though.
