Positive surprises: Sonic Secret Rings, No More Heroes
Negative Surprises: none as yet. Most of the negatives on this thing you can see coming from a mile away anyway.

I agree with Mr Khan about negative surprises--there aren't many.
Positive surprises: Zack & Wiki, definitely, and Sonic and the Secret Rings. Oddly enough, I used to hate Sonic and the Secret Rings, but I picked it back up and actually put a bit more time into it, and it really wasn't that bad.
On the DS, Professor Layton and the Curious Village was a smashing surprise. It's now one of my favorite games.

professor layton is splendid - can nintendo announce a date for the sequel already, please?!
also, for anyone interested in sonic and the secret rings, i do believe i've seen several discounted copies of it on the end caps at target for roughly $24

I saw Sonic and the Secret Rings in a bucket at Wal-Mart today for $19.92, I believe. I almost bought it in case I need to buy a birthday present for any Wii-owners and forget or something.

Positive - Elebits - With it's cutesy game art I wasn't sure what to expect... I HATED it after the first two levels or so, but the more I got used to the controls, I loved it...
Negative - From the same makers of Elebits - Dewey(Dewy?)'s Adventure. It's pretty tough to get used to the controls, but even when you do the game play is super lame...

Having never seen, let alone owned, a Gamecube I always always a little disdainful of SSBM. Believe it or not, I used to argue Kung Fu Chaos was the superior game - I was such a fanboy. But Brawl is a great game. I had no real genuine expectations, and I really enjoyed it.
Sonic/Mario Olympics was a bit of a bummer, though. I thought it would be a little like Winter Heat, but it wasn't. It was rather shallow.

Positive:
• Sonic & the Secret Rings
• Catz 2
• Resident Evil 4...I wasn't a huge fan of the games previously because of the clunky controls and aiming, so playing with the Wiimote was, for me, a total revolution.
Negative:
• Elebits
• Dewey's Adventure...worst game I've played, as far as games that actually made an actual effort go. Would have been tolerable had they added a camera.
• No More Heroes...wasn't BAD, but the combat system is terrible and I'm spoiled by God Hand. And the open world parts were unbearable!

2nd RE4. Not my kind of game. I forced myself to give it 2-3 attempts because of he reviews/reputation. Once I got in to it, I absolutely loved it. Really surprised me

I'm surprised at the lack of decent shooters and racers on the system and the lack of good multi-player games (mini games do not count). Wii is supposed to be a party system after all.
I was pleasantly surprised by Mario Kart Wii's online experience and Boom Blox as a whole. And from EA of all companies

I agree with you man, about the lack of multiplayer games, I mean, there are only a few "good" multiplayers games, and most of them are fighting games.

Pleasantly surprised with: Mario Strikers Charged. That game was grotesquely addicting when I got into it. I haven't even finished it but I ... I kinda don't want to.
Pleasantly let down by: Super Mario Galaxy. GASP! WHAT?! Yeah, I really didn't get into this. Gorgeous game, really interesting "plot", but the controls bother me. Lots. Of course, I hated Super Mario Sunshine, too. I need to be physically harmed perhaps?

Dragon Quest Swords.
Yes, it's striped down in every way a traditional DQ game is, but it's also pretty damn fun.
Endless Ocean.
Basically a scuba sim, but one I've found myself playing for hours.

Positives: PES 2008! Great game and I didn't expect it to be what it was. Fun and exciting and extremely intuitive.
NEGATIVES: There has been one big negative with the Wii and I will be one of few to say this but SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL was and is a HORRIBLE GAME! HORRID! Seriously, all of this hype for it and it was a dud. The controls are bad on either control scheme and the online is horrible.

Unexpected Positives
BlastWorks - it's multiplayer expansive shooter bliss
Endless Ocean - the best relax game I know with lots of exploration
Mario Party 8 - I've played most of them, but think this one is th emost fun by far
Order Up! - Surprisingly fun and probably the best 'true casual' game on the system
Unexpected Negatives
DQ Swords - really could use motion plus
Alien Syndrome - it's not horrible, but it could easily be so much better
Warioware - I HATE unlocking multiplayer modes, but even without that I found previous GCN versions superior

I thought Mario Galaxy would be great, but not super amazingly great. That was a pleasant surprise. :P
I was expecting more out of Deca Sports, though. A lot of that game just felt awkward. My husband was excited about it because he loves Wii Sports, but he was really let down by it.

No real positive surprises - you can generally get a good feel for those and I tend to be a late adopter most of the time.
Negative (and not completely surprising, but disappointing) - the number of games that lack an online multiplayer option. Very sad that I can't easily play a game or two with my family across country.

I was massively pleasantly surprised by Godfather: Blackhand Edition.
I got it because years of nintendo ownership has left me starving for GTA-style experiences. I never expected what I got, which was a game I got so absorbed and involved in that it dominated my every free minute for about a month.
Seriously, fantastic game. I highly recommend it.

Pleasant surprises:
No More Heroes
Zack & Wiki
Super Mario Galaxy (that it was actually fun for a 20+ y/o guy)
Wii Sports
Motion+
Lost Winds
Unpleasant surprises:
Mario Kart Wii (screw you blind and quadroplegic playtesters)
Lego Indiana Jones
Wii Music (not released I know but I already hate it)
WiiWare prices
FF My Life as King DLC (game is good, DLC is ridiculous)

Surprises:
*Resident Evil 4 - expected a cheap port, got the definitive version
*MoH Heroes 2 - fantastic online 16 player FPS for the first few months when people still played it
Downers:
*WiiWare - where's the love, Nintendo? Dr. Mario is all you've got for us? How about some marketing of the service for the casual audience who don't know it exists. How about DEMOS!
*Too Much Shovelware - a general complaint, but great games like Okami, No More Heroes, and Zak and Wiki are lost on retail shelves buried under awful monster truck games and licensed garbage. It's killing the 3rd party market.

Pleasant Surprises:
- Godfather (Who would have thought an EA-produced movie-licensed game would actually not suck?)
- Mercury Meltdown
- Kororinpa
- Zack and Wiki
- ExciteTruck
Disappointments:
- Very few FPSes
- Heavy focus on non-games instead of GOOD entries in classic (both N and non-N) franchises. Where's the Wii Metroidvania? Where's the first REAL followup to Starfox 64?
- Motion control is not what was promised. Not without WiiMotionPlus, anyway.
- Mario Galaxy. YES, Mario Galaxy. The camera was crap, the movement controls were incredibly clunky, it included that incessant "low health" beeping Nintendo loves, spring Mario sucked, I *HATED* how heavily story-driven it was, I hated Rosalina, and I *REALLY* hated those obnoxiously chatty Lumas that would NEVER stfu.
- Metroid Prime 3: The first two portions of the game (ie, everything before you start exploring Bryyo) absolutely SUCKED. It felt like I was playing a mashup of Halo and XMen, neither of which I have any interest in. The lockon system was terrible (It had been good in Metroid Prime 1). The turning/aiming sensitivity settings were crap: On medium, you couldn't turn or look up/down fast enough, but on high there was ZERO deadzone and you couldn't keep the damn screen still even when you wanted. There was too much Elsia and Pirate Homeworld, WAY too much Norion (I *HATED* Norion), and not enough Bryyo (especially Bryyo Ice). Also, there was way too much time spent on unskippable cutscenes and mini-cutscenes (like that worthless animation and text fade-in *EVERY* time you collect an item).
- Zelda TP: It wasn't bad, but it just felt like a rehash of Ocarina. It didn't have nearly the sense of epic adventure that Wind Waker had, and it didn't have nearly the visual charm of just about every other Zelda game (ie, the graphic design looked just like any other game, which made it feel less "Zelda" and more "Generic puzzle platform adventure"). Also, I hated the "circular inventory" screen, and a few of the controls seemed a bit...wrong (like when you're trying to aim an arrow, left/right is IR pointing, but up/down is A-Stick. WTF?!?).
- Sonic Secret Rings: It started out good, but the more I played it, the more disappointed I got. Plus it was the only Sonic game where I actually hated the music. And the story elements were total garbage.
- Super Paper Mario: A 2D Mario platformer! Yay! With a neat 2D/3D mechanic! Awesome! Unfortunately the game as a whole ended up being boring as shit.
- Splinter Cell 4: A. It was a clearly half-assed port. B. Wii controls are great for most FPSes, but just don't work well for Splinter Cell. C. Even on the other systems, it was still the worst Splinter Cell game in the series.
- FarCry: 'Nuff said.
- Castlevania Judgement: I don't care if it's not out yet. It's already a disappointment.
- Smash Bros: For everything except sideways-Wiimote, they *STILL* don't let you use the D-Pad for movement. WHY?!? That was a deal-breaker for me.

One other disappointment: Okami. I liked the visual style and drawing mechanic. But I didn't really like anything else about it. Gameplay was rather dull, and there was WAAAAY too much dialog.

A couple of votes for Sonic and the Secret Rings being surprisingly good? Well, to each his own I guess. I found it dull and decidedly un-fun.
Surprisingly good: Warioware. Never played it before and I found it to be a blast, and my 3 year old loved to watch me play it. I rented it from Gameznflix, and after 2 months I still hadn't sent it back so I just bought the darned thing. I liked it so much I bought a gamecube controller just so I could buy the Gamecube version. That was also enjoyable, though not nearly as good as the Wii version (not enough variety or quirky humor).

i was surprised by Boom Blox. i wasn't that interested in the previews. When i finally played the game it was awesome. It's one of those games that really shows of what the Wii can do. I've never played anything like it.
