My favorite is Mega Man 2. Loved the first, but the second one is much more enjoyable. Can't say that I ever really enjoyed any of the X series games.

I was just playing through Mega Man 2 for the first time in few years, and I couldn't believe how much better it is than the other Mega Man games, or just about any other 2D platformer for that matter.
Every square inch of that game is packed with gameplay ideas. There is simply no filler in the game to be found.

I'm playing through Mega Man 2 right now(put MM for on a break) and i'm at Dr. Wily in MM 1 & 2. Also, I've played a game or two from X, through, they are much more complicated than the older ones and I really like the simplistic nature of the originals.

I think the Mega Man X games are superior to the classic in terms of gameplay, but my nostalgic factor kicks in every so often and I have to sit down with my classics.
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3
Mega Man 4
Mega Man 8
Mega Man X
Mega Man X2
Mega Man X4
Those are my personal favorites, but I'll play any game in the Mega Man or Mega Man X line-up...except X7, that was a bad purchase on my part.

Megaman 2 all the way! Ever since my best friend gave me the game before he moved away (17 years ago); this has remained one of my favorite nes' games!

If I had to pick my favorite, it would have to be Mega Man 5, Mega Man X and Mega Man Legends. Yes some of you may look at this and say this guy's crazy, but that's what I like. And believe me, I know what I am saying. I've been a fan of Mega Man since I was 9, I'm 27 and have a tatoo of the blue bomber on my back, so you do the math. I have to rant of course about series of late. The current series spin offs are an insult to Mega Man. The first Battle Network was good, but then they killed... many times over. But in an effort to make it look new, they put different people in it in the same situation, just years later and called it Star Force where megaman is now an alien... Really? An Alien? How do you go from a super humanoid robot to an Alien? Advent is pretty decent, it returns to the roots like Zero did (i.e. side scrolling, bosses as big as the screen, hard as all get out). However there's still that itching problem... It's not Mega Man, just his name. I don't care what references it make to our blue friend, it all just complicates the simplicity and pure enjoyment that is Mega Man and takes the story in directions it doesn't need to go. Many will dissagree with me but think about this, are we any closer to the answers we seek with these spin offs? When and why was X created for sure? What happened to Rock, Roll and the rest of the crew? Things like that. If you try to answer any of those questions with your own speculation, excellent, that's what you're suppose to do. If you bring in the spin offs, then you're just nuts b/c they're all dead ends with no final answers to those questions, just more lore. With the way they're making Mega Man 9, I think they realize what's going wrong and what they've done and how it needs to be fixed. Do I think it'll fill in all the gaps? No unfortunately, but we can hope can't we? Guess we'll find out Monday, or so they say.

You know, I was considering doing a Top 5: Mega Man games, but I didn't want to get tarred and feathered for not putting Mega Man 2 at the top, since Mega Man 3 is my favorite.

I like Battle Network the most, as unfortunate as I'm sure that is. Oh, that dirty heretic and his differing opinions!
As a kid I never played Mega Man. Later on I knew of it and tried it out by starting with 7 (silly, silly idea). Only recently have I played 1 and 2 thanks to the Wii and started getting into the series.
That said, I love my RPGs. The main problem people seem to have with Battle Network is that it's Mega Man. Treat it as an entirely separate and irrelevant game (which it practically is) and it just becomes a good RPG.

Love the first few originals, some of the X games...really enjoyed the Zero gba games. Battle Network was cool but didn't evolve enough to keep my interest.

There's something about Megaman Legends 1 that really clicks with me. Mainly that huge interconnected underground dungeon sidequest. It had the charm of a repetitive Japanese Rougelike, but it connected with the main game enough to feel like it had an actual point. Also it filled a very metroidless gap in my life.
After that it's Megaman 2 and Megaman X3

I started with Mega Man X and worked my way back... So X is and always will be my favorite... I like the older Megaman Games... but they don't have everything X does... I've played most of the newer X series games... and they feel like carbon copies with new powers tack on...

Mega Man 2 - it's Mega Man 2
Mega Man 7 - the only one I can beat
Mega Man X2 - THE best MM game period.
In short, I'd say the SNES games (MM7 and MMX trilogy) were a lot more fun than the earlier NES games, but maybe I just sucked at NES games.
It did take me 4 years to beat Super Mario Bros. (which I can now do in 15 minutes if necessary)

Jan_Halmes, thank you. That's a very good way to put Mega Man 2.
x2f0181, I feel you there too.
For me, Mega Man is awesome because of the killer soundtracks. ALL of the original series rocked. If someone were to name a Mega Man character's name to me, I'd be able to hum their theme right off the bat.
The best Mega Man music (in my opinion) goes to these games:
-Mega Man 2 (Classic, crucial riffs)
-Mega Man 3 (CRUCIAL climaxes)
-Mega Man 4 (Jazz-like tone)
-Mega Man 5 (The bends in the climaxes are to die for)
-Mega Man 8 (Mellow, chill tunes)
-Mega Man X (no explanation needed)
-Mega Man X2 (Drums are too good)
-Mega Man X3 (Some heavy guitar progression)
-Mega Man X4 (The Zero solo)
-Mega Man Zero 2 (Zero's theme, very RPG like)
-Mega Man Battle Network (good use of GBA sound while keeping it retro with the Game Boy sound chip)
That's my rundown. I love the world of Mega Man music! Sure, I can plow through any of the classic games, but I've probably got to sit at the beginning of the stage to jam out to the tune first!
