Considering how fast the Wii's piracy scene has been moving, someone will likely soon release instructions on how to bypass microtransactions and install downloadable content updates for free, too.

How long will it be before Nintendo steps in to end these shenanigans? Will that mean the end of Wii homebrew, as well? The vertical shooter Tyrian was originally released by Epic MegaGames (back when they were best known for things like Jill of the Jungle and the Jazz Jackrabbit games) in 1995, but has since been released as a free, open project. It was recently ported to the DS as well.

Okay, so there are a lot of shmups on the Wii. In addition to WiiPaint, a load of console emulators designed for Twilight Hacked Wiis were also unveiled, and DCEmu has rounded them up. They're all based on existing Gamecube-based emulators, but have been extended for the Wii to take advantage of features like the Classic Controller and the Wii's 480p output. Lopst's and RobertFC's ports of SNES9x even allow you to use the Wiimote!
Though the Wii seems like the perfect platform for a Mario Paint revival (as does the Nintendo DS), it's doubtful that you'll hear an announcement for that in the next year or so. In the meantime, if you have a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and are interested in the Wii homebrew scene, you can try out WiiPaint, a new program from Spanish programmer Kontakatilu.

So far, it looks like the version 1.0 application only lets you draw on the screen with a 28-color palette. While that doesn't seem like much functionality, it's a start! Pretty soon*, you'll be looping animations and composing Mega Man 2 themes!

*This probably won't happen "pretty soon."

[Via DCEmu]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Homebrew program enables region-free, Freeloader-free gaming

Filed under: News, Homebrew

Well, obviously, you have to be able to run Wii homebrew to operate this, and there are still some challenges in that area. Like the ten-minute limit on the recent "Homebrew Channel." And the Twilight Princess requirement. In other words, you still need a disc -- but not the Freeloader disc. Team Twiizers have released a publically available version of the "Wii Homebrew Channel," which installs a Twilight Hack-enabled software loader as a channel on the Wii Menu. You still need to perform the Twilight Hack once in order to get the Homebrew Channel software into the menu in the first place, but after that, you're free from Twilight Princess. This is a totally huge step toward simple, everyday homebrew on the Wii!

At least, it will be, eventually. Unfortunately, the version that has been released is a ten-minute demo. After the allotted time, the software stops working and cannot be reinstalled. So much for unrestricted access to the Wii hardware.

[Via DCEmu; thanks, craig!]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Wii saves cell phone gaming

Filed under: Fan stuff, Homebrew

We'll never understand the drive to play cell phone games. Even if phone hardware is powerful enough to render high-quality visuals, the experience is all but ruined by the fact that every cell phone ever has a completely terrible interface for playing games (sorry, iPhone, but we could do with at least one button!) When there are awesome portable game systems available, we don't see the need to play games on our phones. Of course, that's us, and we sort of identify as fanboys of a certain non-phone handheld game system.

"Ares" of the UIQ Evangelist blog solved the interface problem using a program called MobiPad that enables the Wiimote to connect to phones via Bluetooth. Now he can play the phone version of SSX3 with a decent d-pad. There's no waggle or anything, but just not being terrible is a quantum leap for mobile game controls.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Must See TV: Homebrew Channel

Filed under: Video, Homebrew, Channels

It takes almost two minutes to get to the "good stuff" in this video, so, while you wait for that to play, here's a quick summary of what you're watching -- Team Twiizers, the group behind the Twilight Hack that allows users to run their own code on an unmodded Wii, have developed a way to expand on that exploit and install a "Homebrew Channel" onto the Wii Menu.

The channel doesn't do much yet, but just seeing that it's possible has us excited about other possible applications in our near future! Hitting buttons in time with a visual cue only remains as fresh as the accompanying song. But there's a new game that's set to turn the genre on its ear and destroy your preconceived notions of what a rhythm game can be. Today we'll be giving Audiosurf the GlovePIE treatment.

A few weeks ago I expressed my disdain for wipEout XL, which I had been playing to test its worthiness as a comparative platform for the Wiimote versus the SIXAXIS. It's admittedly a good game, but my experience with it at the time had been anything but. For a few months prior to the showdown, I was building a script for the game to demonstrate one of my favorite aspects of the Wii controller design. The script was to feature several different control methods that could be automatically selected by just holding the controller a certain way or plugging in a Nunchuk or Classic Controller.

Well, the PC version of wipEout XL, being old, does not run very well on today's machines. The already-fast game plays at hyper speeds on a modern machine and real Jedi reflexes are needed to control it. So I completely wiped it out of consideration for scripting, and suspended work on those projects which involved that game. And then came Audiosurf - a game that, at its core, is the embodiment of the "have it your way" sensibilities I wanted to express with my multifunctional script, and at the same time, it incorporates the high speed thrill ride dips and dives of a futuristic racer like wipEout.

Audiosurf lets you load up your own music, which the game analyzes to build levels. That alone is not an entirely novel idea, but the twist comes from the puzzle-style gameplay. The tracks are littered with colored blocks for you to collect and arrange, until they disappear and you're rewarded with points. It's a simple concept that's been the basis for countless great puzzle games, but the musical element dictates the placement of the pieces and the tempo of the music sets the speed at which the game runs.

At first I wanted to try controlling the game with just the IR sensor pushing the virtual mouse cursor. But the game is designed in such a way that miniscule flicks of the mouse can slide your ship from one side of the track to the other. I could have designed an IR script to accomodate for that, but I also wanted to keep the full range of mouse motion available for navigating menus and clicking on the pop-up dialogs that give you tips in the tutorial levels. So what I ultimately decided on was to have the IR sensor control the mouse pointer's full range, and limit the mouse range on the other controls.

var.MinXRes = (Screen.Width * .45)
var.MaxXRes = (Screen.Width * .55)
If (Wiimote.HasNunchuk = False) or Nunchuk.ZButton
// Mouse movement
If Wiimote.PointerVisible
(Mouse.X /2) = Wiimote.PointerX
(Mouse.Y /2) = Wiimote.PointerY
Else
Mouse.CursorPosX = smooth(MapRange(Wiimote.GX,1,-1,var.MinXRes,var.MaxXRes))
Mouse.Y = smooth(MapRange(Wiimote.GY,-.5,.5,1,-1))
EndIf
Else
Mouse.CursorPosX = smooth(MapRange(Nunchuk.JoyX,-1,1,var.MinXRes,var.MaxXRes))
Mouse.Y = smooth(MapRange(Nunchuk.JoyY,-1,1,0,1))
EndIf

Fewer than twenty lines of code gives us three ways to control the mouse pointer, which controls your "car" in the game. A couple more lines could add in Classic Controller support, which might even work well for Audiosurf's "Double Vision" mode. But we'll save that for another Revolutionary.

// Mouse Buttons
If Wiimote.A
Mouse.LeftButton = True
Else
Mouse.LeftButton = False
EndIf
If Wiimote.B
Mouse.RightButton = True
Else
Mouse.RightButton = False
EndIf
Key.Space = Wiimote.Home //Help
Key.Escape = Wiimote.Minus //Options
Key.Enter = Wiimote.Plus //Enter
Wiimote.Rumble = Wiimote.B //Rumble when firing
Shift + P + I + E = Wiimote.Two //Stops script running

My inspiration for this project came from using my iPhone. It, like the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, has an internal accelerometer for detecting tilt and motion, and the iPhone's iPod interface can change from a standard media player interface to the Cover Flow interface by just rotating the device. Around the time that I realized the brilliance of this simple trick, I was working on a script for Star Fox 2, and thought it would be neat if I could change from my Excite Truck style of Arwing control to a more natural joystick style of control when transforming my ship to the landwalker mode. Titles with varied gameplay are made all the more interesting with adaptable controls, but if transitioning between control methods initiates the change in gameplay style-- that's another degree of coolness.

Imagine a Rogue Squadron game in which you point your Remote at the screen to pilot your X-Wing in pursuit or evasion, and turning the Remote sideways "locks S-foils in attack mode" and gives you finer motion controls for banking and rolling. There are so many possibilities to explore, and I'll be exploring some of them in future GlovePIE scripts.

If you've got ideas for a game that might benefit from a control conversion, let us know in the comments.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Welcome to the Next Generation of Wii homebrew

Filed under: News, Homebrew
Obviously we don't advocate the use of emulators to play copyrighted games (unless you're Howard Sega and you own the copyrights), but this news is too cool to pass up. Coder ekeeke has released a new version of the Genesis Plus GX emulator that can be run on the Wii using the Twilight Hack exploit.

In addition to its awesome "running on the Wii" feature, this version runs Virtua Racing, which is quite the achievement because of the extra hardware on the Virtua Racing cartridge.

We're mostly pleased with this development as evidence of the rapid progression of Wii homebrew, although we do appreciate the ability to play McDonalds' Treasure Land Adventure on the Wii. We don't see that particular Treasure (yes, Treasure) masterpiece being released on the Virtual Console any time soon.

[Thanks, craig!]

[Update: I totally meant "Welcome to the Next Level." For those of you out of the loop, the application allows programmers to run augmented games on chipped Wiis -- the gore-enabled Manhunt 2 mod is a good example of the software's possibilities.

So far, a lot of the developments focus on making it easier to play pirated copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but there are a few non-piracy-related modifications, too:

Change the credits and increase character speed in Mario Strikers Charged

Play Manhunt 2 in Italian or German

Swap character movesets in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Invincibility mode in Manhunt 2

So, once you're tired of pirating Super Smash Bros. Even so, we're happy about this development, and will continue to be until we see the first horrible webcomic.
[Via 4cr, image created by GBATemp forum member SpikeyNDS, found here]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Where is the Wii Freeloader? But, where exactly is it? We haven't hear anything about the device since 2006 (although there were some rumors floating around last year about it releasing).

But now, finally, it looks like the Wii Freeloader has released. In checking out Datel's official website, we came across the product. It's for sale, right now, so we can only assume that most retailers will be getting their shipments in soon, if they already haven't. So now you can get back to enjoying your import GameCube games again, not to mention the Wii titles that will be fun to get ahold of.

What's your first import going to be?

[Via DCemu; thanks, Craig!]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Trucha Signer opens new Wii hacking possibilities

Filed under: Homebrew

The Trucha Signer is the latest tool to hit the Wii hacking scene, enables kids at home to "modify the contents of a Wii ISO and then re-sign it with an electronic signature the Wii will accept." So, does this mean you'll be able to play pirated games without modding your console? No, not at all.

From what we understand, whenever someone alters the code of a Wii game, the resulting product will not match its signature, and the disc will be rejected. Using an undocumented bug, Trucha Signer will resign the code of an adapted ISO (disk image for storing data on a CD-ROM), allowing you to load the disc successfully onto a modded Wii. We're not sure yet what's possible with this new development, but we've already heard a wide range of fantasy scenarios -- downgrading firmware, copying VC games, switching regions, etc.

Already, GBAtemp forumer Mr.O has posted instructions for "enabling gore" in Manhunt 2 (chipped Wii required). Keep in mind that Nintendo can patch this exploit at any time with a firmware update.

[Via GBAtemp]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Homebrew brings the noise to Wii

Filed under: Homebrew
With the "Twilight Hack" now available to the public and enabling users to run unsigned code on their Wiis, basement programmers are wasting no time in releasing their unofficial software to the incipient homebrew community. Well, Pong isn't the only thing folks are using this to run, as one man shows us his homebrew version of Tetris running on the system. Originally created as a homebrew project for the GameCube many years ago, this version of Tetris is lacking the bells and whistles most have taken for granted over the last decade or so. It requires nothing more than an SD card and a copy of Twilight Princess -- no hardware modding needed. Check out the video above, which features not only a demonstration of the hack at work, but also some neat chiptunes from Thomas Detert.

This is just a proof of concept at the moment, but at the end of the video, the group promises an ELF loader, which would allow the Wii to run Linux. This isn't the first time someone has hacked the Wii, but it is the first time the tools have been made available. So maybe Charlie isn't really coming for your soul, but he is awfully cute, and since he needs only a Wii nunchuk, a transmitter, and a little attention, he's pretty awesome, too. Creator frank26080115 designed the RC robot to work in a variety of ways with the nunchuk for control; he can use the joystick to move the little guy around, or with the Z-button depressed, the scheme allows for full motion controls. Using the C button, he can control Charlie's head. Better still? There's code and more available for all you robot aficionados at home, so you can get to work on your own version.

[Via Hack a Wii]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
