Last month, we asked for applications from people who were interested in joining the DS and Wii Fanboy blog teams, and we were rewarded with great, teetering piles of posts. On that front, we've got good news, and maybe some bad news. At last, we are nearing some decisions. Unfortunately, this means that if you haven't heard from us, you're probably not going to. Sadly, we do not have time to respond to every application individually, but we can say that, on the whole, the applications we received this time around were fantastic and competition was extremely fierce. What a week to be a Wii Fanboy. In case you might have neglected to check out the site over the last week (and why is that, hmm?), we're celebrating the week up to the release of Mario Kart Wii with a new feature each and every day. On Sunday, we spoke about the franchise's history. On Monday, we talked about the alternate kart universe and what the racers could be ripping through turns in. Yesterday, we talked about substitute Wii Wheels. Today, it's all about who else we would like to see make an appearance in a Mario Kart game.

It's a fun way to share the music you love or LOL at with the people you care enough about to send a link. Since we enjoy pushing the things we like on other people sharing our interests, we decided to put together a couple and let the Wii Fanboy community have a listen. We've created two separate Muxtapes for your enjoyment:
  • DJFanboy is game-related or game-inspired music, and
  • DJFanboy2 is just stuff we like to listen to!
Both of these would be great soundtracks for game time, or a nice way to stream some music into the living room through the Wii browser! Kia shows off a new model of car taking full advantage of the Wii. As much as it would explain where all of the damn Wii consoles are, they're just pulling your leg. The closest thing you have to driving a car with a Wiimote is hitting jumps in Excite Truck.

It was one Photoshop that changed the comedic landscape for a team of video game bloggers forever. It's Reggie. And he has a big bag of popcorn.

We can make Tetris faster, rebuild it
Oh, Cubed3. You couldn't fool us when you tried to show off a 3D version of Tetris for WiiWare, linking to a page on Famitsu's website that just happens to not exist. For shame, because if there is one thing that we can say about this, it's that the made-up game looks very slick. Oh well ...

Fake Zelda movie trailer surprisingly high-budget
It's true. The trailer for a pretend movie over at DS Fanboy shows us all why April Fools' Day sucks on the internet: every now and then one of these jokers gets it right and comes up with something we want too much. Oh, and if we were casting, Rutger Hauer would play Ganon. He'd play the hell out of him.

We've gotten a lot of e-mails lately from people who are having trouble getting into their user profiles -- apparently, passwords aren't working. Never fear! We're aware of the problem and we've asked that it be looked into. We hope to be able to report a fix soon. For now, the only known solution, if you must change your profile details, is to use a new login name. Which is to say there's no solution for the moment, but bide a while and we'll get you fixed up.

While we have your attention, we've also got a little announcement about our recent casting call. Did you apply? If so, please be patient; the process of winnowing through applications takes a while. We've received a lot of e-mails asking when we might make our decision, but please keep in mind that it hasn't even been two weeks since we stopped taking submissions, and we have a vast and incredible pile of applicants to sift through. We'll get through 'em, don't worry. It just won't be today. We're picky.

If you saw our recent post requesting applications for new bloggers and you're planning to throw your name in the hat, get to it! We will cease taking applications Friday, March 14th at 11:59 P.M. Eastern time. Rather than rehashing everything we said before, we thought we'd take this time to offer up answers to the three most frequently asked questions:

1. Can I write for only DS Fanboy or Wii Fanboy instead of writing for both?

Sorry, half-fanboys -- we need someone who can write for both sites!

2. Do you assign stories and material to your bloggers?

For the most part, no. In order to succeed, you'll need to be pretty attuned to the news of the gaming world. There's no time to wait for someone to discover the news for you. However, this also means you get a chance to write about the things that interest you.

3. Do I need to own a DS or a Wii in order to write for DS and Wii Fanboy?

It's probably a good idea! After all, how can you be a fanboy if you don't own the hardware?

It's that time again, folks -- the DS and Wii Fanboy blogs are looking for new bloggers. If you can handle being beaten regularly, scrabbling for news, and oh, maybe being paid to write about video games, you just might be the kind of person we're looking for. We're specifically looking for someone who can commit to writing between 50 and 60 posts per month, spread between DS and Wii Fanboy. Not sure how much work that is? Take a peek at the average post on the blogs ... then multiply by 50. It's just that easy. For specific instructions on how to apply, check after the break -- and make sure you read everything. You will be tested.

Requirements:
  • A real enthusiasm for and knowledge of the Nintendo Wii and DS.
  • A reliable connection to the internet (obviously!)
  • Solid, speedy writing skills and the ability to self-edit.
  • A willingness to commit time and effort to DS and Wii Fanboy. It is quite possible to take this on in addition to a full-time job or schoolwork, but it is definitely a commitment of time and effort.
  • Basic photo-editing skills and software.
  • A willingness to follow instructions and an understanding of teamwork.
  • Lots of personality!
Great! Check to all those things! How do I apply?
  • Prepare three sample posts on either DS or Wii material in the style of our current posts. You must include the source for your news/rumors/material.
  • Submit at least one idea for a NEW weekly feature. Not sure what a weekly feature is? Check out a few of these for ideas. (Hint: this has to be an original idea, not a copy of something we're already doing.)
  • Collect links to your other published works, whether or not they relate to gaming (if applicable).
  • Compose a short bio that will help convince us that you are 100% perfect for the position. Include any wacky skills you might have, for lulz (and hey, they might be useful). Also include all applicable contact information.
  • Let us know when you're available. If you have other commitments, let us know which days and times you will be completely (or mostly) unavailable.
  • Put it all into the body of an e-mail (no attachments, please) and send to nintendobloggerjob [at] gmail [dot] com with the words NINTENDO FANBOY APPLICATION in the subject line.
Things you should probably not do:
  • Plagiarize.
  • Use profanity.
  • Ignore the instructions.
  • Skip proofreading and spell-checking.
Wait! I have questions!

Luckily, we probably have answers. At least, for those frequently asked questions.
  • No, you need not be in the United States to apply, or in any specific area. These are modern times!
  • Minors are okay -- if you are legally able to work where you live.
  • There is no deadline as yet, but keep an eye on the site -- we will issue one at a later date. Applying sooner is better than applying later, however.
  • Your application for us is only for us -- not for Joystiq, or WoW Insider, or Xbox 360 Fanboy, or any of the other blogs in our network. If you want to write for them, go ask them!
  • Yes, you will be writing for both DS and Wii Fanboy -- not for just one or the other.
  • Don't worry if you've never written before in any sort of "official" capacity. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Well folks, the improvement train has unloaded its wares at the Wii Fanboy station, providing us with a sweet new gallery system. If you read Joystiq, then this will be one of the oldest and dustiest hats you've ever seen (or worn, for that matter), as they've had this system in place for quite some time now. But hey, it's new to us and we're happy to dine on the scraps off Joystiq's plate!

So, what's new?
  • As you can see above, you may now comment on individual photos in the gallery
  • You may now view photos in two distinct flavors: low-res and hi-res, allowing those of you with teh 56K to cruise around in our galleries and not worry about your computer blowing up
  • We can now add captions on each individual photo in the gallery, allowing us to explain (when needed) what you're looking at and why it's interesting (to us, anyway)
  • The color design of the gallery has also changed to an all-black affair, so hopefully that's better on your eyes than the all-white approach our galleries took before
That about covers it. I've gone ahead and embedded a gallery below for you all to thumb through so you can see how the new gallery system plays out. Hopefully you'll all find it to be as much of an improvement over the last system as we have.
