Well, folks, this is likely to be the very last week for Mii Spotlight. It's been fun while it lasted, and this week, we thought we'd check out some of the Miis that have been sent in over time but were never used -- either because there wasn't an appropriate theme edition, or they were received after the appropriate week, and there weren't enough others to revisit the topic.

We've loved having this chance to look at your work -- it's made us a little excited for the Check Mii Out channel!

In true "mishmash" spirit, there's no theme for this final week -- we're just going to show off some of the leftover Miis we have hanging around, as they were too great to not share. First and foremost, since we are after all Nintendo fans, we have a Mario and Luigi, courtesy of reader Timerider:

Next up, from Mii Spotlight favorite Ali420, we've got representations of George Clinton and the late Jerry Garcia. Not only is Ali420 great at putting together Miis, but he always chooses interesting subjects for his work! Everybody needs a friend like him to trade codes with, just to fill up your Plaza.

One submission we saw a lot of was Albert Einstein. After all, he certainly fits the bill when it comes to people with a unique look who make great Miis, even though the interface restricts really crazy hair a little. We thought this one, which came courtesy of reader Michael, was one of the best we saw. He really managed to capture a lot of personality with what is, over all, a pretty simple Mii. Nice work! All that's missing is a blackboard covered with equations and maybe some chalk dust drifting about. Educate us, Mr. Mii!

We got another great old genius Mii as well, from reader Jonathan, who was heavily featured in our week of ugly Miis. He sent us this Benjamin Franklin Mii that we just couldn't resist sharing:

Jonathan also sent us another Mii we just had to share -- the Crow. Definitely creative work!

Speaking of comic books -- you did know The Crow franchise started as a comic, right? -- we thought this next Mii sent in by reader Antwon would be a great way to send our Mii Spotlight off. After all, we like comics ... so we can't help but appreciate the man who was responsible for so many of the great comics and comic heroes we cut our pop cultural teeth on: Stan Lee!

Thank you, Mr. Lee. Please take us out.

We hope you enjoyed seeing the Miis we've put in this weekly spotlight over the last few months. We've certainly enjoyed the experience, and we'll still be watching sites like Mii Plaza, because you just never know what will turn up.

We just wanted to drop a friendly reminder that we're in the market for all sorts of Miis right now. We'd love to start collecting images of Miis you might use for the Check Mii Out channel, and we're still looking for more musicians and historical figures. Or, y'know, maybe even current government figures. Surely there are a few Dick Cheney Miis drifting around on readers' Wiis, maybe hoping to challenge a Hillary Clinton Mii to a round of Wii Sports boxing. Take some pictures and send 'em to us at mii [at] nintendowiifanboy [dot] com. We love to see your work, and our requests are only rough guides -- we'll take whatever you've got!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mii Spotlight: Pottermania edition

You know we couldn't let the release of the final Harry Potter book slip by without some sort of nod in its general direction! Not only did we warn you, but we've indicated in the past that a few of us tend to be Potter fans around here. If you're not, please, bear with us, and we'll try to be a little less specific next week. But if you are, please join us in this presentation of Potter-themed Miis!

For those who, like us, have been avoiding anything about the series on the internet, we assure you, these Miis are limited to characters from earlier books -- so breathe a sigh of relief. We're safe.

No parade of Potter Miis would be worth the time it took to read the post without the hero himself. We've seen several versions of Potter, with and without scars (which are somewhat tricky to pull off in the Mii creator), but this one sent in by reader Sean made us laugh so hard that we couldn't resist sharing! Guess no one can say it's inaccurate, eh? In fact, we feel quite safe in saying it's probably the most accurate Mii we'll ever post. Good going, Sean -- a little well-placed smartassery can never really be a bad thing, especially if it makes us laugh. And after some of the trouble we had with creating Ron and Hermione Miis, we were sorely tempted by your system ....

Luckily, however, Flickr user tiisaineko happened to have a nice set of Potter and his main pals, with Severus Snape hovering about, as he is often wont to do:

We really like the combination of the yellow tops with red pants to represent the Gryffindor colors here. Nice touch!

Of course, we had to try our hand at a Potter Mii -- yes, a real one, not a joking fake -- and he seems to have turned out okay:

Poor Harry. All of the scarred Potter Miis we've seen around the internet sacrifice eyebrows to make his scar. Oh well, who needs eyebrows anyway? Harry doesn't look too happy here, but really, can you blame him? He's had it rough.

Some of the other characters seemed a bit easier to deal with than Harry's pals. As we've talked about before, people with really distinctive features make for easier Mii creation, so of course, we had to try our hands at a couple of really offbeat Potter characters: Dolores Umbridge and Sybill Trelawney.

While we would have liked to have given Professor Trelawney more disheveled hair, she seemed to turn out alright, and making her eyes and glasses bigger was pretty entertaining. We decided to give her a permanent shocked/gasping mouth, as well, as though her Inner Eye has just seen something horrible ... like another prediction of Harry's early death, of course.

For Umbridge, we decided to go with the more horrible book version. While Imelda Staunton does a wonderful job in the film, the book version of the very awful Umbridge just looks much worse. We used this picture as a model, though because she's probably one of our least favorite characters, we gave her a more piggish nose out of sheer spite:

It was tempting to go in and slap on a bow with Photoshop, but we decided to leave her as it. We like spending as little time with Umbridge as possible. Nasty woman.

Some of our other efforts, like the Malfoys, weren't quite as effective, but we'll share them anyway:

Guess the arrogant pureblood look is a little more difficult to capture in Mii form. Oh well, at least no one can say that we didn't try! Father and son are both dressed in black, of course. We're sure they wouldn't have it any other way.

Finally, we wanted to wrap things up with a very clever Mii we found on MiiPlaza.net: a Voldemort Mii made by user BBQ Iggy. Voldemort's pretty popular -- seems to be one of the most-made Miis after Harry himself -- but while he's easy to capture in feeling he's more difficult to render realisticially, what with the weird-eye thing he's got going on. BBQ Iggy got creative, and though the picture quality isn't the best, the effect really deserves some kudos.

That's it for this week! Remember to send us your best and brightest Miis and we'll feature them right here in the Mii Spotlight. Just snap some pics (or use one of the Flash-based Mii creators; we're not picky) and send them to us at mii [at] nintendowiifanboy [dot] com. We're always taking submissions!

You may not have noticed (because, uh, you apparently live under a rock inside a cave) that Harry Potter fans have a lot of reasons to be excited right now. There's a new movie and a new book on the horizon (ohgodnospoilersplz), and we thought it might be a good time to celebrate our Harry Potter love by dedicating this week's Mii Spotlight to all things Potter. So if you (or someone you know) has a Potter-themed Mii banging around the ol' Plaza, snap some pictures and send them our way at mii [at] nintendowiifanboy [dot] com. We will totally accept Photoshopped scars, too.

We're taking a break this week from our usual Mii Spotlight format to discuss the future of Miis, including the forthcoming Mii-focused channel, and what we would like to see in the way of updates to the Mii creation process. We hope you don't mind ... and anyway, we're short on Miis! We can only guess you guys were far too busy immersing yourselves bodily in E3 videos and news to create any new little people this week.

But no worries! Not only will we have new and interesting ways in which to wield our Miis in the near future, games like MySims seem to be running with the super-cute avatar idea, and soon we'll be able to expand our tiny armies of near-lookalikes to epic proportions. Miis even turn up in Wii Fit, though there it seems they must do battle with faceless VR mannequins who threaten to take over our exercise plans.

Actually, Miis v. Mannequins could be an excellent game inside Wii Fit. Too bad we're mostly sure it isn't included. We do love our cartoon violence ... perhaps a little too much.

The newly-re-announced (that's quite a word we had to build) Check Mii Out channel has been producing a bevy of mixed reactions since it was mentioned at GDC. Wii Fanboy staffers and commenters alike tended to agree on one thing, though -- just voting on Miis really isn't enough. Perhaps that's part of why the channel, which was supposed to hit in April, was delayed. Now it looks like there will be contests and other promotions, which we're all for. It may not be Thunderdome, or even the vanquishing of mannequins, but a little Mii-creation-status never hurt anyone.

But is it enough? Sure, we'll probably play around with the channel -- we certainly have some Miis we like to show off, which is rather the point of this weekly feature! -- but what about the use of Miis in more games, or additional features for the Mii channel? We've long felt that there are things that are just missing from the Mii creation process, and we're not alone. I've been bemoaning the lack of funky hair colors since before the channel even became a reality, because, let's face it ... streaks and Crayola-inspired colors and highlights are getting more and more common, as well as body art and jewelry. If the Miis are about bringing more individuality into the Wii experience and gaming as a whole, don't we need to reflect that? Perhaps Nintendo should look to EA (not something we ever thought we'd say) and the Sims franchise, particularly the upcoming MySims, for some ideas on how to expand. You guys had some interesting ideas yourselves when asked:

Reader DiGamma had some good ideas -- "More glasses, and hairstyles. And styled shirts. Nintendo should just release packs, along with the regular VC updates. More hair colors, and accessories. Watches, hats... Nintendo's missing out on a gold mine."

And we can't help but wonder if reader hvnlysoldr is down south with us: "Indians and Cavs caps. Boots. Mullets. More hair colors. Backpacks. Jeans. Shorts. Sunglasses. Blue overalls."

Sounds like everything we see on shopping trips around here. Laugh it up, sure, but it's all the little idiosyncrasies like this that make us who we are. Even the sizing scale of Miis doesn't quite offer enough options. What about pregnancy? Not easy to reflect in a Mii, and since the little caricatures are so easy to update and change around, shouldn't they be able to reflect massive (yet temporary) changes such as that?

There are other things that would add to the Mii experience as well. Being able to download and trade Miis is great, but why can't we edit them? If a friend sends over a Star Wars Mii and a flash of inspiration offers the perfect way to improve it, the entire Mii has to be recreated. That seems like a bit of a bother. After all, this is my Mii Plaza, and I should be able to give you a neckbeard if I want to. What good is a friendship if you can't gently poke fun at people, anyway? Imagine the looks on your friends' faces when they pop over for a little bowling and you've switched genders on them. Comedy gold, yes?

Something else, suggested by reader reef that we think would be a great addition is the idea of being able to design custom clothes for your Mii -- using your DS. We'd love to see expanded (and useful) DS/Wii connectivity in the future, and this seems like a fantastic opportunity. It's much easier to draw and design using the stylus.

But unless you spend a great deal of time playing Wii Sports or Wii Play, some days, it hardly seems worth creating Miis. They're fun to fiddle with when you're inspired, and we're pleased that more games are coming to support them, but even more would be nice. It's fun to play as your real self, and fun to play as a caricature of a celebrity or character as well, and while we maybe wouldn't want that in Zelda, there are other places in which Miis would fit in nicely. We can only hope to see more of that in the future, and since Miis have turned up in other games, like Mario Party 8, it seems likely. But the wait is long, and we are impatient little fanfolk at times.

What changes would you like to see for the future of Miis? Don't just tell us (though we welcome that as well) -- show us! We have an all-new challenge for a future edition of the Mii Spotlight: take a Mii, either a photo or a Mii created with one of the flash tools available on the internet, and get photoshopping. Show us how you would like to liven up your Miis, and we'll present the altered versions some week. We will probably even play along with altered staff Miis. We're also still looking for music Miis, and we'd be happy to do a non-themed week in preparation for the Check Mii Out channel. You think you have something you want to submit for voting? Show us first and maybe we and the readers can give you tips to make them even better. Send us the goods at mii [at] nintendowiifanboy [dot] com! We promise that next week, we'll get back to showing off creations instead of jabbering about all the things that could be.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mii Spotlight: 'Cause you're ugly

Well, you're not ugly, but there are a lot of ugly Miis out there. We just can't resist moving facial features around and into places they're not supposed to be. Sure, sometimes you do that and you get Admiral Ackbar, but other times, it looks more like what's under the hockey mask in the Friday the 13th films. Not pretty.

But even ugly Miis need a little time in the spotlight, so we're dedicating this week's edition to the worst of the worst. Check out the parade of awful after the jump!

In response to our own challenge, we decided to go in and fiddle around in order to create some ugly Miis. Ours are nothing next to some of what you guys sent in, but we thought we'd show them to you anyway, just for kicks.

Both of these guys started life as default Miis, or rather, pre-created Miis. While we can never quite get those to work as representative of actual people, the faces the system creates are often pretty hilarious. Further tweaking, however, creates Miis more like this. The second guy was simple; he's just a matter of out-of-proportion facial features, because the resizing functions are fun. The first one, however ... even we're not really sure, but he looks like he may be some kind of seriously demented French guy in caricature. He wants his baguette, and he wants it now. Maybe it's just his eyebrow mustache that gives that impression.

But we're still in the little leagues compared to you guys. Reader Pedraam sent us two Miis that definitely look like they spent some quality time with the ugly stick.

Poor Miis. With the top one, he (she?) just looks like a candidate for a good sideshow. Better catch one before they all become extinct! With the second guy, we just don't want to be around him when he has a cold. No one needs to be able to see up your nose, man.

For reader Casey, ugly Miis are a family affair. First, cousins Jake and Zak created a couple of ugly Miis, and who could resist such a challenge? Like any good, upstanding Wii owner, Casey had to throw down with a few all new ugly Miis. Thus, the "Butts" group was born.

We're pretty sure we've seen those couples around before ... perhaps playing the slots or hitting Denny's for a couple of Grand Slam breakfasts. Are we alone here?

Finally, reader Jonathan (and his filthy assistant, his wife) may just be working on that Mii Freakshow -- they sent us a truly epic array of ugly Miis. In fact, we feel safe in saying that they may have the most horrific Mii Plaza ever. Some of them were just so bad that we couldn't even show 'em, but trust us when we say they were both hair-raising and hilarious.

This one is not only pretty ugly, but we simply couldn't resist the name. If our own mother units didn't happen by at times to play a little Wii, we might have to make this one to use in Wii Sports. It's the ultimate in not-so-subtle insults.

Maybe this Mii with the ladybeard is related to the one above. They can share a tent in that future sideshow. As for the other ... well, it's a little early for Christmas poo, so we'll just go with gross. Is that corn?

This one was just inevitable. We knew someone had to make a piggish Mii at some point. We give Jonathan points for execution here.

And finally, one we absolutely could not resist ... because we used to own a fish named Sushi! Ours was considerably more attractive than this Sushi, but we definitely have to dole out some props for realism here -- that looks exactly like a fish.

And that's it for this week's Mii Spotlight! As ever, we're always on the lookout for new and interesting Miis. Send us whatever you've got: fictional characters, celebrities, weird and ugly Miis. Nothing is too strange or too offbeat for the weekly look at Mii Plazas everywhere. Just take a few photos and send them to us at mii [at] nintendowiifanboy [dot] com! Right now, we're particularly interested in more musicians, as we almost have enough music-themed Miis for an all-new spotlight. We're also collecting quite a few historical personages as well, so if you happen to like sitting around and re-creating the faces of ex-Presidents, send 'em in. Or if you have an idea for a theme week and a challenge you'd like to see issued, let us know!

It seems like everyone loves to make Mii versions of their favorite characters, whether they're from films, games, or television shows, and who can blame them? It's very satisfying to finish a Mii that turns out well and show it off, just to see if it's immediately recognizable. Considering that, it's no surprise that people send us lots of random characters, and often, they're Miis of characters that are just so brilliant, or from things that we love, and we can't resist them.

We dedicate this week's Mii spotlight to all the great character Miis we haven't seen yet ... and we wait with bated breath to see what else you guys can come up with after seeing this week's submissions.

We're suckers for presentation around here. Sure, anyone can make a Mii, and there are even lots of great examples already out on the internet for you to check out and modify and perfect. But there's just something that makes even a less-than-perfect Mii ten times better if it's presented well. Reader SeeTrapp admits that there's something missing here. "Too bad there aren't any friggin' cowboy hats...." he laments, and we agree -- but the presentation more than makes up for the lack.

In a similar vein, did anyone catch Jason Kottke's Celebrity Mii contest at the end of last year? If you've searched around for Miis at all in the 'net, like we have, it's likely you've stumbled across the post. The winner was Dave Curry with his super accurate Zach Braff Mii, and in celebration, he immediately photoshopped the unsuspecting Mii head onto a still of Braff in his film Garden State. The result is so hilarious that we couldn't resist sharing it here with you today.

But let's get back to what's important here -- reader submissions! Núshio sent us something he knew we wouldn't be able to resist: Phoenix Wright Miis. Anyone who's read us go on (and on and on) about the Ace Attorney and his finger of power over on sister site DS Fanboy knows that we're obsessed with the series.

We kinda mashed them in there for purposes of presentation, but we're willing to bet that Nick doesn't like being quite so close to Edgeworth. Núshio also sent us in this great Larry Butz Mii, but what we're missing here is Detective Gumshoe. Won't someone come through for us?

In the front there, you can see the ladies of the series, especially little Pearl, who's easy to pick out.

Our final two Miis this week come courtesy of Mii Spotlight regular, Ali420, for whom it seems no challenge is too great. These two Miis are both from classic television shows -- Colonel (later Sergeant) Klinger from M*A*S*H, complete with trademark dress, is immediately recognizable there on the right. On the left, of course, is the Mr. Kotter Mii we've mentioned a few times in past weeks. We issued a joking challenge for Miis from Welcome Back, Kotter, and Ali420 answered our call with style.

Thanks, Ali420! No one does it quite like you do.

That wraps up this week's edition of the Mii Spotlight. As ever, we're always on the lookout for new and interesting Miis. Send us whatever you've got: fictional characters, celebrities, weird and ugly Miis.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, (or, last week in the Mii Spotlight) some pretenders rolled in here and tried to get everyone psyched about Star Trek. Please. We know what's better. We know that Star Wars is really where it's at -- especially when it comes to Miis. Does everyone have Spock on their Wii, ready to get his tennis on? We think not ... but there sure do seem to be a lot of Admiral Ackbars out there, ready to warn us of impending traps.
In order to purge the Star Trek images from your brain, we've lined up a great selection of Star Wars-themed Miis from both you guys and from around these internets. We hope to win over even those who think that hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side.

First up, we have some classics, brought to you by our very own Mike Sylvester, whose Revolutionary column runs here at Wii Fanboy every Tuesday. He's got a Chewbacca Mii for us, and since he's just so awesome, we chose his Admiral Ackbar from all the other Ackbars populating the web.

Not only is Mike a great Mii-maker and GlovePIE expert, but he can also snap a mighty fine Mii picture. Maybe someday, we can convince him to share his secrets.

Reader Andy also offered up an example that seems to be a very popular Mii: the classic Stormtrooper. The only problem with these guys is that the word Stormtrooper itself is a little too long to fit in the line for the name! We've seen some creative adaptations: S. Trooper, Stormtroop, and our own, named Stormy. To those of you with Stormtrooper Miis ... what did you name him?

This next Mii is certainly one of the most creative we've seen in any category, so we had to borrow it from MiiPlaza just to share it with you. Yes, folks ... it's a TIE Fighter. Miis don't really get much better than this (in our humble opinions).

BBQ Iggy, whoever you are: you've got some serious skills there. Great work!

This last one hits the Mii Spotlight by way of Flickr, and it comes from user Perfect D0rk. It's certainly perfectly random, which is why we simply could not resist sharing it here with you today. It's a Tusken Raider! How great is that? Sure, we could be piling on the Han Solo and Princess Leia Miis, but aren't the ships and sand people more fun?

But how could any look at Star Wars Miis be complete without the creator himself? Luckily, reader Joseph pitched in a George Lucas Mii to round out the week. He must be psychic or something. Joseph, that is, not George Lucas ... or is he? We're sure we'll never know.

That's it for this week's edition, folks. Remember some of our recent requests, particularly for ugly Miis. We almost have enough scary-crazy-ugly Miis to present you with an entire freaky Mii army, but please, send in more! But don't hesitate to send in your Miis of any stripe. It may take us a while to get to them, but we promise: if you send it, we'll probably show it ... eventually. We've got some great submissions that are just waiting for the proper thematic week ... so send us yours at mii [at] nintendowiifanboy [dot] com!
Mii Spotlight -- the final column (of the week.) These are the Web voyages of the blog Wii Fanboy.
This first set is a veritable Mii Spotlight all by itself-- from a Flickr post by DJ_5Fingaz, here's most of the senior staff of the Enterprise-D: Worf, Picard, Troi, Data, Crusher, Yar, La Forge, and Riker.

It's Saturday, and obviously, that means another week in the Mii Spotlight! This week, however, we offer something a little different than our usual fare. Or, depending on how you look at things, it could be seen as exactly the same as our usual fare. Decide for yourself!

So what's the big deal? How is this week's Mii Spotlight both similar and yet different than everything else we do? It's simple, really -- it's different, because we're not presenting you with reader made Miis ... and yet, it's the same, because this week, we're showing you our Miis. We hoped to include reader Miis as well, but it looks like you guys are shy and are busy hiding under pillows.

First up, obviously, is your host in the Mii Spotlight, Mii! Er, me. Does anyone else find that they have to update their Miis pretty often? I rotate hairstyles every time I get my hair cut; there are three that I tend to use. But this one's probably my favorite. Is it wrong to cut your hair in such a way that you can retain a cute style on your Mii? Maybe I think about my Mii too much. Well, we all need something to obsess over.

The "Itsa Mii!" joke here is really difficult to resist. I just want you to know that. It's right there, lingering just below the surface, and it's begging to be released.

Next up is the man with the plan, who you hear every week during VC Monday Madness going on about the latest releases. It's Dave Hinkle! Man, that accent -- every time he opens his mouth, I picture cheesesteak and the Liberty Bell. He couldn't pretend to live anywhere but Pennsylvania with that accent. Not that I'm one to talk, with my mushmouthy Southern sound.

Dave also has a special announcement on Monday morning, so don't forget to check back. It may just be worth your while.

Do you ever find yourself wondering just how your favorite piece of hardware is selling in Japan? Then you should obviously be checking out the weekly Japanese Hardware Sales with Jason Wishnov, if only to witness his weird and wacky weekly antics. We keep waiting for Jason and Ludwig to fistfight over who has the better weekly sales posts, us or Joystiq. Of course, we prefer our own guy, but don't tell Ludwig. He's frightening. And he just might beat you up.

Next, we have one of our newer additions to the Wii Fanboy fold, Mr. Eric Caoili. That's Kayohlee, if you were curious, not cow-illy, like cows on lily pads (which would be a sight to see). Eric is responsible for most of our better graphical efforts, including the Mii Spotlight image we use each week for this very feature. His true love, however, is photoshopping cat heads onto things that aren't cats. Just don't tell his wife. She thinks it's her. And it may well be, but he sure does like those cats ....

Last here, but certainly not least, is our resident retro renegade, JC Fletcher! As you can see in this picture, he's pretty angry. Wii Sports isn't old enough for him yet; he won't be able to enjoy playing it for at least five years, which is why his Mii looks less than thrilled. It's either that, or he was just stung by a swarm of angry bees. It's okay to smile, JC. We won't tell anyone. Cross our hearts, pinky swear, etc.

JC, of course, is responsible for the very excellent Virtually Overlooked column each Thursday. If you love obscure old games as much as he does, then be sure to check it out.

So that's everybody, right? We've got the token chick, the guy with the PA accent, the funnyman, the graphics guru, and angry retro gamer. So why aren't we wrapping this up?

Because we have an announcement to make, that's why! Starting this Tuesday, Wii Fanboy readers are in for a weekly treat, courtesy of this man, Mike Sylvester. But who the heck is Mike Sylvester? Well, you may know him a little better as Tiger, our resident GlovePIE expert ... and now, he really is resident, thanks to his new weekly column, Revolutionary. Check back here Tuesday for the inaugural edition.

So there you have it -- the current Wii Fanboy staff in Mii form. Remember that we're always accepting any Miis you want to send us, and right now, we particularly want your ugliest possible Miis (just how big can that nose be?) and also, since someone actually did send us a Welcome Back, Kotter Mii, don't you want to see if you can one-up it? If not, send us Miis from your other favorite shows, both past and present, and they just may be featured here in the Mii Spotlight. Snap some photos and sent them to us at mii at nintendowiifanboy dot com.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mii Spotlight: Remember to send us those Miis!

Don't forget -- we've got two Mii requests for anyone who'd like to be in our weekly Mii Spotlight. Send us your ugliest Miis, the worst you can manage to make (funny is a bonus), and we also want reader Miis for a special edition Mii Spotlight. Don't be shy! Snap a few pictures and send them to us at mii at nintendowiifanboy dot com.

We'd also like to ask: what challenges would you like? Television show casts (old and new), or cult movie characters, or ... what? Suggest it and we'll see about making it happen. There was a suggestion around here about requesting Welcome Back, Kotter Miis, and that made us think maybe what we really need is Travolta-through-the-ages ... but we're not sure our Mii Plaza can handle a disco inferno turned hitman.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mii Spotlight: Pop culture goes Mii

The best sort of Miis seem to be made from those people who already look like walking caricatures -- the kind of people who have such distinctive features that you could guess their identity from seeing only their left eye, perhaps, or their signature grin. So it follows, of course, that iconic characters also tend to make for good Mii material, though not always, as we here at the Fanboy learned ourselves to our great chagrin ....

The Miis you guys have been sending in are inspirational -- it makes us want to settle in front of the television, Wii remote clutched in one hand, and get down to creating some Miis from various characters in pop culture. One thing we haven't seen a lot of are Miis from the cult classic Joss Whedon shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. We thought that was just a travesty, and set off to remedy this extreme hole in the fabric of Mii culture, but about ten minutes in, we realized something we should have already learned: not just anyone can be a good Mii. While there are plenty of actors who do have distinctive features that translate well to cartoonish caricatures, there are just as many who don't ... and apparently, Whedon likes to cast the latter. We prefer that reason to the other possibility, which is that we might suck at making Miis.

Still, this set of Buffy Miis from MiiPlaza.net showed us that a good representation of Xander was at least possible (sans eyepatch, though; we're digging that look all over again with the season eight comics), and so we set out to make some Buffy Miis. And failed. Horribly. We salvaged one, the Slayer herself, circa season six. Maybe someone out there can do a better job! If you haven't figured it out, Whedonverse Miis are pretty much gonna guarantee you a moment in the Mii Spotlight. We all have our weaknesses. Send 'em in!

With our first project failed, we decided to turn to something that had to be a little easier -- one of those aforementioned folks with a very distinctive look. Even better, we've already seen this particular person as a Mii, so there was a great template, if only we were willing to re-watch a video (and we so were). Yes, it's Stephen Colbert!

That's one giant talking head right there. But enough of our stuff -- let's get to your Miis! First up from reader Mike is a character that's definitely recognizable, and like the Cheshire Cat of Alice in Wonderland, easy to caricature due to a very exaggerated grin. Though after The Dark Knight comes out, there may be a rush to make all new Bat Miis. Frankly, we can't wait!

With the next Harry Potter film (and the last book!) coming out soon, we figured it might be a good time to feature these two Potter-themed Miis, as well. We're certain that Severus Snape doesn't actually play tennis; it's much more likely that he's about to smack someone with that racket. Probably poor Harry. Snape was sent in by Adam, and inset is Harry (minus his scar, but what can you do?) by reader Dave.

Finally this week, we have a pair of iconic older fellows we thought a few of you out there might recognize. First up is a fantastic Mii of character actor Michael Ironsides (talk about a perfect fact for caricature!) by Ali420 and Locke from Lost, played by actor Terry O'Quinn. Locke comes to us courtesy of Spoonatron (anyone else want to know how that name came about?).

That's it for this week's edition of the Mii Spotlight! Don't forget to send us the best of your Miis! While we'll take whatever you've got, we've always got special requests. Last week, reader Captain_Casey suggested we do an "ugliest Miis" edition, and we think that is a hilarious idea. Just toss features on some Miis like a mashup of Mr. Potatohead and Katamari and see what you get! We would also still like to see reader Miis, but we'll relent -- you don't have to send us a picture of yourself -- just the Miis. Take pictures and send them to mii at nintendowiifanboy dot com.

You guys have sent us a lot of Miis, and some of them are pretty random. We mean seriously out there. And that's just fine with us -- we like random and weird! In fact, you could probably say that we appreciate the more creative, out-there Miis more than any other, so how could we not devote an entire week's Mii Spotlight to the weirdest of your submissions?

We just had to. Besides, we think you'll enjoy them as much as we did.

First up is a Mii that we just had to use, if only because we are big zombie fans around here. So how could we resist this zombie Mii? We're a little hesitant about making him ourselves, though... after all, he might try to eat all the other Miis, and that's a lot of wasted hard work! The zombie was sent in by reader William, who also sent us this fine Robert Mitchum Mii. Since the legendary anti-hero actor's death is a little more than a month from its ten year anniversary, we couldn't resist using this one, either. The only thing William could have done better would be to present Robert Mitchum as a zombie. We're sure Mr. Mitchum would have approved.

Next up is a set of Miis by reader Dave -- not to be confused with our own Dave -- and while we've seen several of these before, we have to credit his presentation above all else. See, Dave made the LeBrons, but he wasn't satisfied with just making the Miis -- he went the extra mile, and for that reason, we've chosen his work to feature here:

Nice presentation, Dave! We can hardly tell it's not the real thing. Next up is from reader Mike, who sent us Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama. Again, any Mii that goes above and beyond the simple, vanilla Miis that we were meant to be making with our Wiis tends to get our attention, and this one was simply irresistible. Nice job, Mike! Mike also sent us a Leela Mii, also from Futurama, but we decided to take a pass on that one, since we also wanted to show off this Cyclopian Mii sent in by longtime reader Zsy. Maybe you guys should be friends, eh?

This one, sent in by reader Andy, was actually made by a friend of his. So, friend-of-Andy, good job! We like dragons almost as much as zombies. What can we say ... we're suckers for fantastic creatures, and from today's Mii Spotlight, it looks like you guys are as well.

This was one of the very first submissions we received, and suffice to say we've been dying for an excuse to use it. Since it's definitely somewhat random, it seemed like a good way to wrap up this week's spotlight. So, without further ado, we give you ... Bill O'Reilly! Damian seems to have chosen the perfect mouth for this O'Reilly Mii, wouldn't you say? Too bad we couldn't fit a few more wrinkles in there, though.

That's it for this week! We're running low on submissions, so we'd thought we'd ask you guys what you might like to see. Would you like us to give you a challenge? Let us know in the comments and if we need to, we'll post later in the week and give you a challenge topic. For now, we're still looking for reader Miis, which always works best if you also don't mind plastering a photo of your own face across the internets. Other themes we'd like to feature? Characters from your favorite shows. Send 'em to us at mii at nintendowiifanboy.com.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mii Spotlight: Musician edition

Another week has passed, so it must be time for Wii Fanboy's Mii Spotlight! Last week, after Eric showed off how good it was to be a gangsta, we sent out a request for musician Miis, and we got a few that we're excited about showing off. If you haven't yet seen your Mii here, be patient -- we're saving some of the submissions for later editions. If your Mii is creative, well-made, and interesting, don't despair. You'll probably see it here eventually! It just takes time to get enough that are thematically linked.

But we also need to make something very clear: the Miis you send us need to be your own, or you need to credit the original maker if you're sending photos of other people's work. We've had some complaints that not all of the Miis we've featured were actually made by the person claiming credit. It's one thing to see a Mii somewhere and make your own based on that, and another thing altogether to take someone's photos and send them in as your own. We can't check everything, and there's no real way to verify, so we ask you simply to be honest, and please remember to be respectful of people who put their spare time into creating Miis for your enjoyment.

But enough with the lectures -- let's see some Miis!

I have a confession to make: I needed an excuse to make White Stripes Miis, and Eric's Miis, as well as the bevy other other music-influenced submissions we had was enough of an excuse to put me in front of my Mii Channel. But here's what I discovered: I'm not that great at making Miis! It's either that, or the dynamic duo is pretty hard to capture in caricature. But I gave it a shot all the same:

I felt forced to do current-White Stripes looks, because if there's one thing the Mii editor is really lacking (besides awesome hair colors), it's a long, sleek ponytail, like the sort Meg White used to favor. But one thing I did do was set them both as favorites, so that they could wear red pants (which you can sort of see here in a less-than-optimal picture). It's all about the details when it comes to Mii creation!

My other music Mii's basis also seems to often be photographed with a long ponytail or long braids, and while she's also seen with her beautiful red hair long and loose, it just wasn't the same. But ponytail or not, no Mii Plaza (at least, in my house) could be complete without singer/songwriter Neko Case.

A good friend of mine is convinced that Neko Case could well be an incarnation of godhood on Earth, and his Mii must agree, because he's always trying to engage her Mii in conversation. Could it be a case of Miis imitating life? Perhaps someday we'll make the rest of The New Pornographers to keep her company, but there's a lot of them. It may require a whole extra Wii.

I wanted desperately to have a Frank Black Mii that could lumber around the Mii Plaza, but alas, nothing quite turned out right. Someday, I will get him, and perhaps the other Pixies as well. But enough of my musical tastes -- let's see what iconic musicians you guys turned out!

This first one, we just couldn't resist. While we see a lot of the same Miis over and over again -- it's the same on all the Mii sites around the internet as well -- this is one we hadn't see a lot of, and yet she's just perfect for the simple editor to reproduce. We give you (or rather, reader Michael does): Cher! We'd love to see a whole set of Cher Miis, from the beginning of her career until today. The evolution of Miis. Sounds like a future edition ....

Reader Adam J. is all about the classics. We'd be willing to be that he has an awesome music collection. Here's what he had to offer: the late, great Barry White, Roy Orbison, and James Brown. These are fantastic Miis, but they made us a little sad. Why is it that so many great musicians are dead? These men all had powerful voices and a huge stage presence, and they are greatly missed. But hey, they live on as Miis!

Reader Ali420 sent in some great ones as well, including this 50 Cent Mii that we just couldn't resist for this week's Mii Spotlight. But it's his caricature of Danny Trejo at MiiPlaza.net that we really loved. Just as some people don't make great Mii fodder, others are simply perfect ... and we're always happy to see this underrated actor get more attention!

We have more music Miis, and would love to revisit this topic in the future, but we need even more Miis from you to make it happen, so start sending 'em in!

Want to be featured here? Send your Mii photos to mii [at] nintendowiifanboy [dot] com. We have two requests this week: we want Miis of our commenters and readers, first and foremost, for a coming special Mii spotlight, and we want the most random, off-the-wall Miis you have. We have some really unique Miis that readers have sent in, but we need more. So give us your pundits, your lesser known comedians, your old school cartoon characters, and your weird twists on the Mii creation system, so we can show the world!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mii Spotlight: All Eyez on Mii edition

Now that we've introduced our Mii Spotlight feature and its star-studded cast, we're just about ready to get this party started -- this gangsta party that is. Before we start gettin' low and backing our things up though, don't forget that we're still on the lookout for new and exciting Miis! If you have any that you'd like to share, especially if they're music-themed like this week's collection is going to be, take a few pics and send them to mii at nintendowiifanboy dot com.

So what's the rapper to non-rapper ratio in your Mii Plaza? On my console, it's an easy 3:1. I created most of the hip-hop cartoon figures out of boredom, but there's a number that were produced for the specific purpose of motivating other Miis to throw their hands in the air, waving them as if they didn't have a care in the world. Jump past the post break for some of my favorite rapping Miis and submissions from our own talented readers!

2Pac
Strictly 4 My G.A.M.E.R.Z.

Rumors of rap legend Tupac Shakur's death have been greatly exaggerated -- check out this photo I snapped of him playing Wii Sports baseball just the other day! He must be taking a break from recording and releasing dozens of "posthumous" CDs. If his next album has more tracks like the one that popped up on Chappelle's Show, I'm definitely going to pick that one up!

Top three tracks:
"Hail Mary"
"Ambitionz Az A Ridah"
"Holler If Ya Hear Me"

The Notorious B.I.G.
Mo Miis Mo Problems

I probably would've been throttled by rap fanboys if I featured Tupac and not his East Coast rival, Biggie Smalls. How does someone come up with a pseudonym like "Gza" anyway? Well, it's the sound that the word "genius" makes when a record is scratched by a DJ. It also nicely complements his cousin and Wu-Tang Clan partner's nickname, Rza.

Top three tracks:
"4th Chamber"
"Duel of the Iron Mic"
"Animal Planet"

Busta Rhymes, Lil' Kim, and Kanye West
Woo-Ha!! Got the Rest in Check

These last three rappers aren't necessarily favorites of mine, but they look a lot like their real-life counterparts! I've still got a long way to go with completing my emcee collection, but until Nintendo starts providing more options for the Mii creation process, I'll have to do without Mos Def, El-P, and Clipse.

Now let's look at some of the Miis you've sent in this past week!

Carl (Aqua Teen Hunger Force)
submitted by Spoonatron

Remember that Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode in which Carl and Meatwad got addicted to candy after listening to MC Pee Pants sing "I Want Candy" and "I Need Candy" too much? If you think you have an interesting or odd Mii, send it to us! Simply attach it in an email and shoot it over to mii at nintendowiifanboy dot com, where our crack team of Mii inspectors will look it over.

So, without further ado, head past the post break where we offer some Miis of actors taken from film.

First up, we have the cast of The Breakfast Club, created by reader Adam:

The movie that introduced us to teen angst just invaded our Wii. In detention, you're friends with the cool kid, but outside of detention is a whole 'nother story. School on a Saturday? Psssh ...

Next is none other than Mr. Bean, submitted by reader Brian:

Whether it's the hilarity of having to make a sandwich or dry the crotch of your pants (the sink faucet was broken!) with the hot air blower in a men's room, only to be caught in what looks to be a rather disgusting situation, he's brought us lots of laughs over the years. We can imagine this Mii bumbling about in the Mii Plaza ...

Here we have a pair of Asian actors from reader Dave:

We have to say these two have made some excellent movies and their Miis reflect their attitudes very well. With Jackie's seemingly permanent smile and Bruce's distinctive "whooo" each represented here, we like what we see.

Finally, we have one up that yours truly made:

From one of my favorite films, Chan-wook Park's Old Boy, this Mii is the movie's main character Dae-su. Imprisoned for 15 years, he is framed for murder and mysteriously released one day. Then, he seeks revenge in the way only he can. A fine film, we suggest you give it a go.

And there we are. Another week of Mii Spotlighting, but we still lack the subsequent Miis to keep it going. We need your help. So, be sure to send in your creative/funny/disturbing Miis to mii at nintendowiifanboy dot com. And, as always, thanks for reading!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mii Spotlight: The inaugural edition

We're test-driving a new feature here at Wii Fanboy, but there's an essential element we lack, and that's your participation. See, we know that Miis are the hotness and no one can resist twisting the system to produce Admiral Ackbar, but we want to see what you have to offer. Who lives in your Mii Plaza? This is your chance to show off all your hard work. Just send pictures of your best Miis to mii at nintendowiifanboy dot com, and the best of the best will appear right here in the Mii Spotlight on Saturdays.

But don't just send any old Mii; everyone's seen the title character from V for Vendetta, and we've all seen Peter Griffin and the cast of The Office. Send us your creative Miis, or even just the Miis you made for yourself and your friends, perhaps along with a picture of the real deal. We want to see how good you are at making Miis.

After the jump, we've got a few examples from around these interwebs, as well as tools that may help in the creation process.

MiiPlaza.net is packed with more Miis than one could shake the proverbial stick at. Some of the best ones come from cartoons, since Miis are themselves very cartoon-like. Here's a few we like:

Beavis and Butthead, by user Rage:

And from the same user, E Honda! He was always a favorite when we needed to humiliate someone in Street Fighter. Nothing like putting on the squeeze.

This one, by user Mr. Tip, wins us over because, really, who's not a Conan fan? If you said, 'not me,' then you are so dead to us. We give Mr. Tip an A+ for presentation, though we wish it was bigger. Conan is pretty big, after all. He should be crushing the other Miis and driving them before him, just like Satoru Iwata does. Just, y'know, on a smaller scale.

Wow, now we really want Nintendo to add a Mii Steel Cage Match feature to Mii Plaza. That would really liven things up, eh?

And of course, there are Miis from some of our favorite games... like Dr. Stiles from Trauma Center, submitted by Mii Plaza user N8gameboy:

If you need ideas, there are tons of sites with Miis, but the best, of course, will be original. Wow us with your creative skills. Need a place to practice that's away from your Wii? No problem. Remember the first flash-based Mii creator that was posted here and on Joystiq -- that's still useful for a general idea, and then there's this one as well, the Mii Editor, which we put to good use:

So all that's left is for you to send us your Miis. For now, send us a Mii that means something to you, and feel free to explain why you chose it. We'll be happy to post the best, but if it takes us a while to get to you, don't despair. Don't have any Miis that you feel are meaningful? Then get ready for our first theme week, which will feature Nintendo-themed Miis. Send us execs, characters from games, whatever floats your boat. But one warning: we probably won't use anything obvious (like Mario) unless it's the best Mario ever. You were warned.

Permalink | Email this | Comments
