Those of you who booted up the Wii this morning and checked out the Mario Kart Channel may have noticed that the first competition has finally been opened for entry! The process is simple: complete three laps of Mario Circuit as quickly as possible, upload your time to Nintendo's big list 'o times, wait until the deadline (May 9th or May 10th, depending on your timezone), and get ready to bask in internet glory. Hurray, right?

Wrong.

When we think of Mario Kart time trials, we think of gradually shaving milliseconds off of our best times, of taking every corner as finely as possible, of finding the best way to utilize our three mushrooms, of locating the perfect racing line, and of keeping our noses just ahead of the time trial ghosts. Yet this first Mario Kart Wii competition totally misses the point.

For instance, it's not a time trial at all, but a fully fledged race, complete with eleven opponents and all the usual items. In other words, you can take every corner as flawlessly as possible, only to get blue-shelled on the final straight. Which doesn't strike us as a terribly fair contest. We guess this is meant to level the playing field for newer players, but shouldn't more skillful players be justly rewarded?

Anyway, if you do want to try your hand at being robbed of a deserved victory, this blogger's best time so far is a quite appalling 2:03.325.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Majesco: Nintendo 'very enthusiastic' about Wii online functionality, helps Majesco prove it with Blast Works

Filed under: News, Fan stuff, Nintendo Wi-Fi

Well, someone had to step in and tell Nintendo that they're doing a good job with their online platform (even though, and let's face reality here folks, they aren't right now, but we're hoping WiiWare can help change that). Majesco sees Nintendo as doing okay with the online content in titles such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii, but sees the system as able to do more elaborate and better things. Majesco is planning to make this leap into a bigger world with the release of Blast Works for the Wii.

So what is so envelope-pushing about Blast Works's online functionality? Well, players will be able to create and trade content online. On top of that, players will also be able to head on over to a special website set up by Majesco, where they can browse other content made by users and, through the power of a mouse click, send that content to their own Wii. The best part? No Friend Codes necessary.

Majesco said that Nintendo has helped them make this leap into a world full of more rich and dynamic online content on a console that hasn't had it yet and sees the future as very exciting regarding Wii and the online space. You can read all about how in the MTV Multiplayer interview here.

Gallery: Blast Works
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/blast-works/708322/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/blast-works/708321/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/blast-works/708320/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/blast-works/708319/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/blast-works/708318/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This is what taking Mario Kart online looks like

For those of you who don't want to settle for just some screenshots of the game's online menus, check out the video above.
After Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii has become the latest title to appear in the excellent "Iwata Asks:" series of interviews. Featuring producer Hideki Konno, Wii Wheel project leader Kenichiro Ashida, and Shigeru Miyamoto (in fully relaxed, shirt-open mode) getting grilled by Satoru Iwata, it's a treasure trove of information for Mario Kart enthusiasts.

Alongside an enjoyably lengthy dissection of the series' history, there's also discussion about Mario Kart Wii's online play. The online matchmaking in particular sounds a treat, in that it allows players to join a race once it's finished, thus avoiding races becoming one-on-one affairs (as so frequently happened in Mario Kart DS). Players can use the Mario Kart Channel to check which of their friends are currently playing online, and even join them instantly.

Producer Konno and Miyamoto also explained the decision to include bikes in this game, with Konno admitting that his own hobbies influenced the choice, and Miyamoto stating that the bikes are there to "make the world of Mario a little more for boys [by] adding an extreme-like element to the game." (Apparently, the title was originally known as "Mario Kart X," with the "X" taken from "extreme")

Finally, we hear more on the Wii Wheel, and the reasoning behind it. As expected, the peripheral is designed to make Mario Kart more approachable than ever before, and project leader Kenichiro Ashida reportedly created "about thirty" prototypes (many of which you can see in our gallery). Oh, and he even made gold and black versions -- just for the hell of it. Josh Thomas from WiiFolder has compiled an excellent two-part video tour of Dr. Mario's Virus Buster for saps like us who are impatiently awaiting WiiWare's arrival in the west.

Sure enough, against all reasonable odds, the footage above and after the break has actually managed to raise our excitement levels for the game -- we now particularly want to try out the Wiimote-specific mode (especially with three other people), and were delighted to hear that online play is totally -- that's totally -- lag-free (despite Josh being based in the U.S. and his opponents being in Japan). Finally, we were less than delighted to learn about Josh's record online -- just four wins from 35 matches. We suspect our own tally will be crushingly similar come May.

Every (other) Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

Custom level creation in console games has come a long way. It used to be, if you wanted to share a track that you built in Excitebike, you had to invite friends over to play your creation on your cartridge, until you powered off your NES and the track was lost forever. Nowadays our levels can be saved to internal storage, and shared by removable media, or across the internet to survive for posterity.

It's a feature that's fully supported by all consoles this generation, and big games are highlighting it amongst their bullet points. System sellers like Halo 3, LittleBigPlanet, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are trojan-horsing the concept of custom level creation into the consciousness of the console-consuming collective. Former Sony exec Phil Harrison popularized the term "Game 3.0," but we'll be taking a look at how it is playing out on Nintendo's platform.

The first title to support WiiConnect24 did so in the form of custom level sharing. Elebits lets players do what everyone wants to do in a sandbox: create something to destroy in a fantastic spectacle. With a rigid body physics engine in place and a first person perspective, Elebits fills your sandbox with lifesized virtual toys to throw around and have collide with each other. Some really interesting things could be done with this editor in the hands of anyone with a youthful imagination, and the "fun with physics" element can sometimes surpass the main campaign in games which rely so heavily on it. The biggest problem with Elebits' level sharing is that you and most of your Wii-owning friends know probably didn't buy the game. Not much to share, and too few people to share it with.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl, on the other hand, you likely have in your collection of Wii games, so you and your buddies can easily send and receive custom arenas via WiiConnect24, or by SD card sneakernet. Brawl doesn't provide you with a lot of backdrops or building blocks to work with, but what's there is enough to recreate stages from prior Smash Bros. games, fabricate pixel-graphic inspired battlegrounds, or come up with original designs to throw down upon. The ease with which these levels can be shared has given rise to communities and websites dedicated to sharing them. The fact that levels can be stored to SD cards means they can be transferred to PCs, and shared on the ol' worldwide web. Game 3.0 meets Web 2.0.

Though the initial selection of stage-building materials is slim pickin's, dedicated architects will find their selection expanding as the number of stages under their hat increases. In addition to the huge assortment of default songs, music tracks that are unlocked by achieving certain gameplay goals will also become available for linking to custom stages.

Guess what movie scene is being recreated here

While we're of mixed opinions on Stephen Spielberg's BOOM BLOX, there's no denying its appeal to our childish desires to create stuff for ultimate wrecking. With physics perhaps more sophisticated than Elebits, it'll be interesting to see how dominoes fall when they're composed of explosive materials and corrosive chemicals. BOOM BLOX's editor even supports placement of computer-controlled characters to affect or be affected by what's going on in the environment. To make the sharing element relevant, you're going to have to convince your DO NOT WANTing friends to pick up the game, too.

Blast Works is something we can all get behind. Where BOOM BLOX is, at present, of questionable worth, Blast Works is exploding at the seams with value. There will be several games and game types to choose from on the disc, so there ought to be something to please any fan of shmups. Plus, having a level editor so robust that the game's designers even use it to create all of the levels it ships with, it raises the bar for what we want and expect from a game ... (3.0). PC gamers have long known this satisfaction, and with all the necessary hardware components in place, there's no reason why this generation's console gamers should receive anything less from editing tools.

We hope to see some of the less favorable trends of this generation give way to positively evolutionary ones like level editing and user-side content creation. Maybe Nintendo will even see fit to revisit some of their 64DD plans on a more capable console. The world (outside of Japan) is long overdue for a 3D update to Mario Paint. What games would you like to be playing, building, and sharing content for? Let us hear (figuratively, of course) it in the comments.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

LONPOS joins the microtransactions conga line

Filed under: News, Nintendo Wi-Fi, WiiWare
Hold on tight to your wallets, purses, and Mario Coin Block Banks, everybody. We'd like to point out that the only Bomberman we know about is the Wii Ware Bomberman game announced via the Japanese Wii Ware page. This scan is interesting, though, because it reveals some details about this upcoming Bomberman game we're assuming is the Wii Ware version.

This latest scan shows the game will retain that Bomberman look and we're crossing our fingers that it will retain that classic feel, as well. And, thanks to this same magazine scan, we can confirm the game has 8-player support for online fun. It will also include 39 different stages and is scheduled for release on Wii Ware in Japan this June. Oh, and it will also feature Mii integration.

Like we said, this could be a new retail Bomberman game being developed for the Wii, or it could be the Wii Ware title. We're leaning toward the Wii Ware game, but it's not like Hudson hasn't hooked us up with retail discs containing Bomberman in the past.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hudson to bring Tetris to Wii Ware this summer

Following this morning's revealed pricing plans and launch date for Wii Ware in Japan, Hudson Soft unveiled a familiar puzzler for the video game download service -- Tetris. This marks the publisher's fourth announced Wii Ware title, the other three being Star Soldier R, Bomberman, and Joysound (karaoke). Thumbs up to Hudson for an excellent Wii Ware lineup!

As with Dr. Mario & Bacillus Extermination, this edition of Tetris will include Mii support and a cooperative mode. While that sounds great, what's up with the blasé Mii expressions in these screenshots? Has years of playing Tetris on their handhelds/phones/graphing calculators dulled them to the game? Perhaps the six-player online matches will win them over? Hudson hasn't announced a specific price or date for Tetris yet, but you can expect to see the game hit the Wii Shopping Channel this summer.

Gallery: Tetris
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/tetris/724109/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/tetris/724108/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/tetris/724107/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/tetris/693253/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/tetris/693252/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We Love Golf even more now that it supports online play

Do you notice something missing from the Japanese boxart of We Love Golf?
With 12-player races, weekly challenges, uploadable/downloadable ghosts, tournaments, and even a dedicated Mario Kart channel, online play in Mario Kart Wii sounds impressively complete. Yet here's something you won't find when you first jump online: voice chat support. Rather, we'll all be communicating via text chat, with Nintendo's European arm confirming on its site: "You can create rooms for friends to join and even text chat while you're waiting for other racers."

This is hardly surprising. Time and again, Nintendo has refused to include voice chat in its games, often citing the personal security and wellbeing of players. But surely the ability to chat to registered friends isn't asking too much? Any of you happen to think Nintendo is being overly cautious?

Gallery: Mario Kart Wii
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760705/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760704/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760703/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760643/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760642/">

[Via IGN]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GDC08: Wi-Fi good news, bad news

Here's the good news:

Nintendo project leader Takashi Aoyama recently announced that Wii games would soon feature downloadable content. If you're unfamiliar with this service (which is currently prevalent in the other current-gen systems, the PS3 and Xbox 360), this means that you'll be able to download additional content for your games via Wi-Fi.

There's no word on what games will offer DLC (though we can make guesses on a few that will and won't), nor have we heard about potential memory limitations with the inclusion of this service. Add-ons will be available for both Wii Ware titles and disc-based games, though.

As per usual, Wii owners will be able to purchase such content with Wii Points or a credit card.

Now, are you ready for the bad news?

According to Nintendo, not all Wi-Fi services will be free on the Wii. The company is introducing a "Pay and Play" policy, which will make players subscribe to a specific game in order to use that game's online features.

Titles that implement this policy will have a red "Pay and Play" circle instead of the blue "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection" one that we're used to seeing. Aoyama didn't specify which games would make users pay-to-play, nor did he reveal how much the services would cost.

Now, we could understand Nintendo charging for online services if they were up to snuff with the offerings of its competitors. It's no secret, though, that the company currently falls behind its current-gen counterparts in regards to online play. PSN (the PS3's online network) is still free for gamers, and although XBL requires a monthly subscription, it can't be argued that Microsoft's service is miles ahead of the Wii's.

Perhaps the cost will be minimal, or perhaps most publishers will decide to keep their services free (if the decision is up to them, that is). Let's just hope this doesn't happen with the DS, too.

*Note: Since Nintendo has been vague on "Pay and Play" details, it's not exactly clear what services will require users to cough up cash. We'll keep you posted as we hear more.

Read: Nintendo Will Begin Offering Downloadable Add-On Content on Wii
Read: Nintendo to Begin Charging Money for Some Online Gaming

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GDC08: Nintendo sheds more light on Mario Kart Wii

Filed under: News, Nintendo Wi-Fi, Peripherals

IGN got their lucky, lucky hands on the latest build of Mario Kart Wii recently, taking the time to carefully analyze the differences between this game and the installments of old. Following this, they wrote a five-page preview on the game. We've read the whole thing (omg no wai?!). We're excited.

First of all, each racer now has a plethora of rides to choose from: three karts and three bikes each. These are available from the start of the game. Also, the CC classes return, but with a small twist. The 50CC bracket is for karts only, the 100CC bracket is for bikes only and the 150CC is a mixture of both. IGN notes the difference between the two as the bikes having a tougher time with turns, but being easier to boost with (tip the wheel back to do a wheelie, hold it then zoom off). As for karts, they'll get boosts from powerslides, providing more boost depending on how long the player holds it, eliminating the need to slam on the d-pad to generate these anymore (we're not sure if this means no more snaking or not). Stunts will also provide boosts, allowing a player to perform a mid-air stunt off of a jump and shoot off once they land on the track.

Gallery: Mario Kart Wii
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760705/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760704/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760703/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760643/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mario-kart-wii/760642/">

The playable characters in the demo build included Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Toad, Koopa, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser. There weren't any kind of locked character slots, however IGN noted the character selection screen seemed kind of open and might have some hidden folk to unlock come time for final release. We wouldn't be surprised. Also, Nintendo confirmed that you can in fact race as a Mii, however the demo build did not have that incorporated (we wonder how many times we're going to have to race Hitler online?).

As for the track situation, there were 8 older tracks unlocked for use in the demo: Peach Beach and Waluigi Stadium from Mario Kart Double Dash, Yoshi Falls and Delfino Square from Mario Kart DS, Mario Raceway and Sherbet Land from Mario Kart 64, Shy Guy Beach from Mario Kart Advance, and Ghost Valley 2 from Super Mario Kart. On top of that, 8 of the new tracks designed for the game were also available, including Luigi Circuit, Moo Moo Meadows, Mushroom Gorge, Toad's Factory, Mario Circuit, Coconut Mall, DK Summit, and Wario's Gold Mine. Not a bad selection for a press demo, if you ask us!

Now, onto the good stuff: online play. As previously reported, the game will allow 12-player online racing. What's great about this is you can hop online alone, or you can have a friend join you through your Wii. Also included in the game's online feature set is the Mario Kart Channel, an in-game feed of the leaderboards and other pertinent information relative to the game. This will also allow players to download and upload ghost data , as well as tournaments and weekly challenges. Sounds fun!

Overall, there is a lot of information to digest here. This game's scope is going to be much larger than anything we're used to in the franchise. And, for that, we're extremely happy.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shiren 3 packed with online features

Chunsoft is adding a suite of online features to the newest entry of its revered roguelike series, further distinguishing Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 3 as more than just "a 3D remake of the original SNES game." Topping the list of online additions is a new versus mode in which you can take a break from having monsters, traps, and other common dungeon hazards kill you -- instead, you can die at the hands of other wandering Shirens.

Like the rescue feature introduced in Shiren the Wanderer DS, you can resurrect your friends who've died during their dungeon travels (they can resurrect you, too!) in Shiren 3.
Sega Superstars Tennis' joyful habit of meshing together franchises such as Jet Set Radio, Samba de Amigo, Space Channel 5, and OutRun has already left us smitten with the game, even though it's just tennis.

Indeed, our extreme fondness for the title meant it only hurt more to hear that this celebration of Sega awesomeness would not have online play in the Wii version. The sad news was casually revealed in an IGN preview of the title, though we had our suspicions back when the game was announced.
There's a vicious rumor currently circulating on a number of message boards that the Australian version of Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 is shipping without online functionality of any description. Forum users at various sites, including Aussie-Nintendo, PALGN, and NeoGAF, have all complained that the in-game menus completely lack an option to play online, while the game's box in Australia has neither the Nintendo Wi-Fi logo, or a mention of the title's much-vaunted 32-player online mode, which is available in other regions.

Just to further confuse matters, the game manual that shipped with the title in Australia reportedly does dedicate a whole page to the online mode. Frankly, we're confused, not to mention a little bit worried for our fellow Wii owners down under.

At the time of writing, EA has yet to respond to our request for clarification.

[Thanks, Peter!]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dojo update: Trying out the Wi-Fi

Of all the new features Brawl will bring to the Smash Bros. table, the ability to fight opponents online is arguably the most eagerly anticipated. Still, some might argue that Nintendo just ain't that great at this online malarkey, and that Brawl's Wi-Fi mode could be a big, fat fly in an otherwise quite lovely tub of ointment.

Director Masahiro Sakurai is clearly aware of these concerns, because today's dojo update features footage of an online scrap between Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto and the development team in Tokyo -- apparently, this is pretty close to the distance between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, which Google Maps tells us is 435 kilometers, or 270 miles. The resulting four-man online brawl looks buttery-smooth and fills us with hope.

No online? No sale.

IGN Australia confirmed in a recent preview that developer Team 17 has left out the online multiplayer and WiiConnect24 downloadable content features we were looking forward to. The hands-on impressions also has details on the level editor and new weapons, but those points seem overshadowed by the missing online support.

Why wasn't this a high priority item on Team 17's docket? And what reason would any level-headed gamer have to purchase A Space Oddity over the online-enabled, $20-dollars-cheaper Worms: Open Warfare 2 on the DS?

Gallery: Worms: A Space Oddity
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/worms-a-space-oddity/515416/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/worms-a-space-oddity/515415/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/worms-a-space-oddity/515413/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
