How are they? Well, we can't waste precious space here telling you about them. That's what the video above is for! And, if you can't check out our videos for some reason, head past the break for some screens and text.

Renegade (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

Renegade hasn't held up, if you ask me. The gameplay gets really tired, fairly early on, and even though you can do some cool things like control the direction of combat, as well as grab enemies, it all boils down to you being as cheap as possible to get through areas as quickly as possible. It may only be $5, but we're sure you can find plenty of better titles on the Virtual Console for that money.

Pokemon Puzzle League (N64, 1 - 2 players, 1,000 Wii Points
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

Pokemon Puzzle League is a puzzle game in Pokemon clothing. If you're looking for any kind of activity that involves those little critters, you won't find it here. Instead, you'll find lots of fun puzzle action, available in multiple flavors. On top of the basic fun of puzzle gameplay, there's loads of activities to do in the game, from the Puzzle Academy to the timed challenges. Give it a try.

This week, a pair of new titles are available on the Virtual Console system. For those of you paying attention, this comes as no surprise. As for the rest of you, we ask that you just pretend like we totally made Renegade happen. Like, it was all us.

This week's Virtual Console titles are:

Pokemon Puzzle League (N64, 1 - 2 players, 1,000 Wii Points

Renegade (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)

As usual, these will be available for download after 9am PT (12pm for those of us on the east coast). Be sure to stop back and check out our video wrap-up, which should help gauge whether or not these games are worth your money.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 4/28/08

Now that we've finally gotten River City Ransom, Nintendo has saw fit to take a lazy week and only provide us with one new Virtual Console game to download. At least it's a good one though, as Double Dragon on the NES owns. Likely, many of you recall it doing just that as a child.

So hit up the video above, then head past the break for more.

Double Dragon (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

The one thing to consider about this game is that it's also available on other consoles. It's been reissued as a downloadable title on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 (which means it has updated graphics and such), not to mention the plethora of ports it has received. Still, it's Double Dragon, which means it's solid. So if you like side-scrolling beat-em-ups, and have a friend on-hand to play with, then this one is going to be for you. And at 500 Wii Points, it won't break the bank, either.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games. As always, if you have any tips or rumors regarding Nintendo's Virtual Console service, be sure to let us know and come back next week when we take a look at the latest titles available on the Nintendo Wii!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

VC Monday Madness: Double Dragon

This week sees a lone wolf of a release on the Virtual Console. And, to kill the sense of suspense as to what the game is (unless you like to, uh, read the title of posts), we already knew it was hitting today. That's not to say the game isn't good, though!

This week's Virtual Console release is:

Double Dragon (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)

As usual, be sure to stop by later for our video wrap-up of this week's releases, complete with commentary and direct-feed game footage. This week will go down in history for us, as it shows the release of one of the best NES games ever here in the United States. So what are you waiting for? Hit up the video above, then cruise past the break for the rest.

River City Ransom (NES,1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it, then gift it to a friend!

What can we say? This is one of the greatest games, like, ever. And it's available for only 5 bucks! What else do you need? Just download it already!

Phantasy Star III Generations of Doom (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

As has been said in the past, talking about RPGs in the VC Monday Madness videos is sort of difficult. You see, the amount of time it takes to play a RPG title and get a feel for it is, well, almost an unrealistic expectation from a blogger. Well, unrealistic if you want your video on the same day the Virtual Console updates. So, if you're a fan of the series or the genre, then this might be something you'll want to check out.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games. As always, if you have any tips or rumors regarding Nintendo's Virtual Console service, be sure to let us know and come back next week when we take a look at the latest titles available on the Nintendo Wii!

You see, no more are we confined to off-screen recording of the Virtual Console releases. That's right, we've upgraded to technology widely available since 2004. We're so modern!

Hit up the new video format above and then head past the break for the rest of our usual goodness.

Fantasy Zone (Sega Master System, 1 -2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

Many of you likely remember Fantasy Zone as one of your childhood favorites. It has a very unique art style, visible in the large, bright backdrops and cartoonish sprites that permeate the levels. It's still just a shooter, at its core, and a very fine one. Sure, the VC may be overflowing with shooters at the moment, but this one is still worth checking out.

Mega Turrican distinguishes itself from the SNES entry available on the Virtual Console in many ways. For one, no freeze beam here in MT. Also, in the Genesis version, you can swing around the levels, thanks to a trusty rope that you can use to access otherwise unreachable areas. Overall, though, it still follows the basic "shoot everything, everywhere" formula and, for that, offers up a fun time. If you have the extra coin, we suggest you check this out.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games. Following up Friday's releases for Europe, the North American Virtual Console receives a familiar title this week.

Fantasy Zone (Sega Master System, 1 -2 players, 500 Wii Points)

Mega Turrican (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)

Which one is it? Well, you're just going to have to watch the video above, silly pants! Or, you know, head past the break for the other half of our VC Monday Madness coverage.

Yoshi's Cookie (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

It's not that Yoshi's Cookie is a bad game, just that it's a bit too monotonous in its NES installment to warrant purchase in my eyes. Sure, I love puzzle games as much as, if not more than, the next person, but you can see for yourself in the video above why I can't recommend this for download. If this were the SNES game, however, I might have a different tune to sing.

Bases Loaded (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

Sweet, sweet childhood, here you are in the form of a Virtual Console download. This NES game has almost everything a baseball fan could want in a retro download: a vs. mode for playing with a friend and a CPU AI that tests your skills inning after inning. Forgive me if I love baseball, but it is my native country's pastime.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games. Well, that's nice. This week's Virtual Console releases aren't a total bust like the past few weeks have kind of been, as one of this blogger's favorite childhood games is available. We can't wait until after 9am PT, so we can get our grubby little mitts on these downloads.

This week's Virtual Console releases are:

Yoshi's Cookie (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)

Bases Loaded (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)

One of them is N64 title Cruis'n USA, while the other launches a new system on the Virtual Console for North America. Hit up the video above for your usual dose, then head past the break for some added fun.

Cruis'n USA (N64, 1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

It's not that Cruis'n USA is a bad game; this blogger can easily recall fond memories of enjoying his new N64 with this game. But, the game hasn't held up that well over time. The controls aren't all too responsive and, let's face it: this game can be found for a lot cheaper than $10. If you already own a N64, you likely have this game. If not, there are better N64 games to download.

Wonder Boy (Sega Master System, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

Wonder Boy is a very solid platformer and a bit of a Super Mario Bros. clone. Well, actually, it's a downright clone, but it's still a good game. It's fun, has great sprites and is pretty challenging, even today. Although we would've liked it to be priced at 400 Wii Points, an extra 100 Wii Points isn't going to break the deal for us. Give this one a download.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games. Looks like we've been fooled! If today is going to be any kind of indicator for the future, all Sega Master System games won't be the cheap 400 Wii Points per download we initially thought. We get yet another shooter and it comes packed with a crummy sports game to back it up. Hit up the video above for my complaints and head past the break for the rest.

King's Knight (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

It's not that King's Knight is a bad game, it's just a fairly mediocre shooter. And, along with some of you undoubtedly, our distaste for shooters at the moment due to its flooding the Virtual Console might be causing a bit of bias. We have no fault with the core game itself, as Square's shooter displays a lot of the characteristics we look for in that genre, just, as said, we're a bit put-off by shooters, at the moment.

Powerball (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

Some kind of futuristic no-holds-barred form of soccer and rugby mixed together, Powerball is the definition of tedium. It's a boring and lackluster Virtual Console download, presenting nothing but an opportunity to run up and down the field and pass a ball. On top of that, the camera is too closely zoomed into the court, but that might just be a pet peeve of mine only. Eh, skip this one.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games. Sadly, we get another shooter, but the other title on offer is a fairly unique title. Hit up the video above, then head past the break for some more.

Super R-Type (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

Super R-Type is a good game, but it comes at a bad time. The Virtual Console has been flooded with shooter after shooter, so I find myself to be a bit sour on the genre right now. The game has a lot to offer fans of the genre and likely fills a large part of many a gamer's nostalgic heart, but if you're only going to go with one game this week, I'd suggest Spelunker.

Spelunker (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

Spelunker is both a fun game, and an unforgiving one. You die a lot in Spelunker, so those that may find themselves frustrated at that concept need not apply. It has some very tight controls and has been largely playable for the entirety of the time I've had with it. Sometimes it's really aggravating to slip on a jump or walk off of the edge of a platform, but you keep coming back for more.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games. This week's Virtual Console releases include two titles on Nintendo platforms. One of the titles just released in Europe this past Friday and is a very competent shoot-em-up. The only problem is, the Virtual Console already has plenty of them already.

This week's releases are:

Spelunker (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)

Super R-Type (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)

We try our best to make sure you aren't dropping money where it is not deserved. So, hit up our video above, then be sure to head past the break for the rest of our usual coverage.

Then you can get back to Brawl.

DoReMi Fantasy: Milon 's DokiDoki Adventure (SNES, 1 player, 900 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

DoReMi is a really fun game. It plays well, and is easily understood from a gameplay perspective even though it is an import title. It also has some big, bright and beautiful sprites that animate really well. It's just an overall fun title and worth your hard-earned Wii Points.

Puyo Puyo 2: Tsuu (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

Considering that any gamer craving some Puyo action can just download the Kirby clone for 100 less Wii Points, I can't really endorse downloading this. It's Puyo Puyo. Everyone knows what it is and offering the import for download just doesn't seem like an appealing offer to me. Personally, I think you'd be better off disregarding this one.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games. Update: Oh, and JC suggested pointing out that these two titles are imports, which is pretty sweet. Come on, Nintendo! You spoiled us with your week after week of releasing multiple titles, only to have us completely let down today? For shame, considering that most also expected the first entry in a very good series of games to be on the VC (it did seem like a no-brainer).

Oh well, at least, like we said, the game is good.

Super Turrican (SNES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!

Super Turrican has some sweet action. The running might not be as solid as the gunning, but you're murdering lots of enemies and just plain old blowing up everything in sight. If there's one thing we can appreciate about these older games, it's their basic and very appealing approach. Maybe it's a very male thing, but we can find lots of comfort in making those that would stand in our way die very fiery and very painful deaths just by hitting a button on a controller.

That concludes our look at this week's Virtual Console games.
