Aonuma can't quit Zelda until he beats Ocarina of Time {Nintendo Wii Fanboy}
Nov 26th 2008 10:26PM I honestly don't think a change in game mechanics is necessary. What you need to do is think about what the core values of Zelda are - exploring caves and dungeons, saving the princess, an open world where you can do things out of order, maze-like dungeons, finding cool items that help you, and maintaining the atmosphere of exploration and magic and wonder.
Not so important things - having a compelling emotional storyline (sorry), sidequests, dungeons with specific themes, changing things up just to change things up, strictly adhering to canon.
Frankly I would be thrilled if they rebooted the whole damn thing and made a game called "The Legend of Zelda" which was a fully immersive 3D Zelda with the same feeling of openness and wonder as the original NES Zelda. Just drop me in the middle of Hyrule with nothing and let me find my way through a massive maze-like world jam-packed with monsters where I can get lost, find dungeons before I'm ready to experience them, get overwhelmed, discover surprises on my own (wouldn't it be great if you had to burn trees down with no indication of which tree held the entrance like in the first game?).
What don't want is for the team to give me a framing story that holds my hand and says "now you need to go to this dungeon!" and then "now you need to go here and speak to this guy!" That's the stuff that makes the game completely flat for me.

Nov 26th 2008 5:52PM Yeah the original Zelda map IS a freaking maze. But that's what made it so badass. I would LOVE to have a 3D Hyrule as easy to get lost in as that original Zelda map was.
That goes for the dungeons too. I much preferred the "similar square rooms" mechanic over the stylized dungeon design later on because you really did get lost in those dungeons. I mean Level 9 is just MASSIVE.
I would love to have that kind of experience in the 3D Zelda, which is something that has yet to happen. In each iteration of Zelda in 3D there's always a fairy or a NPC holding my hand telling me exactly where I need to go next. What I want is to have an open-ended Hyrule where it's not clear where the hell I'm supposed to be or where any of the dungeons are.

Nov 26th 2008 4:19PM I disagree. I think LttP is the quintessential Zelda experience. OoT is also phenomenal, but LttP is the winner here. Wind Waker has its own charm, but it has a lot of flaws.
I still love original Zelda, if only because it's the only game that is actually mysterious. I love that there are moments where you literally have no idea what's happening next.

Nov 19th 2008 5:46PM My fiancee and I vote everyday and compare results. She's more tuned in but I'm further away from popular opinion. I may not have my finger on the pulse of society but I'm no sheep.

Nov 17th 2008 8:01PM I can understand why they wouldn't want the game linked to your particular weather system. If you lived in a place with less-than-ideal weather it would screw different people who are unable to experience different seasons. If it rained all the time in real life you could never catch any bugs, for example. It would also kill the slow clock passage of time concept. The seasons changing is one of the best things about the game.
The one thing I lament that isn't there is user-created content. Sure you could fill your house with the limited amount of themed furniture and get HRA points, but what I would love would be the ability to make your own furniture and sell it in an online market. I would also love to be able to decorate my outdoor patio with outdoor items instead of having to simulate the outdoors in a room.

Nov 17th 2008 7:57PM AC has goals and achievements if you meet them. Some of the achievements (the golden slingshot, for example) are easier than others (the golden axe). Nonetheless there's PLENTY to work towards. What makes it different is the seasonal clock. You can't just grind through the game in a week, you have to wait the entire year to cycle through everything there is to do. Thankfully there's a half dozen random things you could be focusing on at any given time.
When I first played AC my goal was to earn tons of money to pay off my mortgage and get the biggest house. After a few months of that I got hooked on catching fish. After about half a year of that, I got into decorating and furniture. Then it became more social, making friends and getting pictures of villagers, then I focused on gardening and making hybrid flowers. Then fossils. Then bugs.
The point is that while you're waiting for a particular fish to cycle into the game, there are half a dozen things you can work on as side projects.
Maybe the reason you don't get AC is because you haven't familiarized yourself with everything you can do.

Nov 17th 2008 5:11PM No. You should be ashamed for asking the question though. :)

Nov 17th 2008 2:44PM Thanks. Still haven't decided whether to import or start fresh. Seems like cheating to get your catalog.
Can more than one person import? My GF has a character in her town as well.

Nov 17th 2008 2:33PM Question about importing your character:
1) When you import your character from the DS, does it merely bring your character over or do you get your house, your stuff, your tools, etc? Part of the appeal of doing AC:CF is starting from scratch all over again, which would be ridiculous considering I've already caught most of the fish and bugs and I have the complete fossil collection.
2) When you import your character from the DS does your character leave the DS town or is a copy merely made?
I guess I'm just not clear on what the importing feature actually does and does not do.

Nov 17th 2008 1:11PM I'll be getting AC, and there is a reason for me to get it over DS, so my GF and I can play and live in the same town simultaneously. On DS she had to have her own town.
My AC is remaining closed til I win NaNoWriMo though. It's my reward. :)
