Many of you folks in Europe have probably already decided whether Wii Fit interests you, but those of you paying attention know that there's another exercise game for the Wii that's aiming to compete with Nintendo's software. Yes, we're talking about Athletic World: Family Trainer (aka Active Life: Outdoor Challenge in U.S. markets).

Perhaps you prefer video game exercise on a mat rather than a Balance Board, or perhaps there's room for two fitness-based games in your life; if either of these conditions apply, though, you'll have to wait a few months to pick up this title. Atari recently announced that the game will reach Europe in September, which is just enough time to make it useless for bathing suit season -- alas.

[Via press release]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/europeans-can-train-their-families-in-september/&cuid=98:1194243&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

Video, screens, and info for Attractive People

Filed under: News, Video, Screens

Hey there, pretty people -- you might be interested in hearing the latest news about Telltale's upcoming WiiWare series, Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People. As for the rest of you uglies, just movie on -- there's nothing to see here. (If you're perusing Wii Fanboy, you're clearly hot stuff, so don't worry and read on.)

Telltale reports that the first episode of the game, titled "Homestar Ruiner," centers around Strong Bad's desire to pummel Homestar Runner. He then decides that the best way to beat his rival would be to defeat him in the tri-annual Race to the End of the Race.

You can check out the video of "Homestar Ruiner" above, although it doesn't show too much gameplay. Occasionally, it looks like you have to choose something from a thought bubble in order to progress the story, but often there's only one item to choose from. Joystiq did report that the demo for SBCG4AP was pretty linear, but hopefully the episode in its entirety will have more to offer.

We've also added some new game screens to our gallery, which feature some beloved characters from the Homestar Runner-verse, so be sure to check them out.

Gallery: Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/strong-bads-cool-game-for-attractive-people-1/806500/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/strong-bads-cool-game-for-attractive-people-1/806499/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/strong-bads-cool-game-for-attractive-people-1/806498/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/strong-bads-cool-game-for-attractive-people-1/806497/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/strong-bads-cool-game-for-attractive-people-1/806496/">

[Via press release; also, thanks fco!]

Dave was totally right in his VC Monday Madness video: I enjoy Double Dragon glitches. The best-known glitch -- and the most useful -- is the experience factory found in the second level. It's easy to completely fill up your heart gauge and unlock every move simply by walking over to the pile of girders after the climbing fence, then going back across the fence, and back again. This will cause the Williams enemy who was standing in front of the girders to disappear, and you can punch the crap out of his ghost for as long as your timer allows. Later in the same level you can defeat the boss by running away from him. He disappears and the game counts it as victory. I'm also a fan of the glitch-bat, which occurs when you swing a weapon just as it's supposed to disappear, leaving a weird bar made up of other graphical elements from the game.

But my favorite glitch in Double Dragon on the NES is at best useless and actually pretty likely to hurt you. At the end of the first area, you can climb up these -- gutters? Pipes? I don't know what they are. Really, they're just wall decoration. But you can walk straight up that wall. Walk up high enough and you'll come back up to the bottom of the screen. Walk downward and you'll die. Move left and you'll warp back to the ground. Try to jump or attack and you'll fall over. Sometimes one of the Linda enemies will try to follow you up the wall and will just end up in some flickery jiggle maneuver just off the ground.

I pretty much can't get to this part of the game without messing with the wall for a while. I can't even explain why it's so amusing. I could only find one video of this glitch in action (at around 2:50), but be warned -- it's one of those YouTube videos with audio of some guy mocking the game as he plays -- the scourge of the retrogaming blogger.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/the-vc-advantage-double-glitching/&cuid=98:1195610&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

Surprise mahjongg game hits Japanese WiiWare next week

Filed under: Imports, WiiWare

Out of nowhere, a new WiiWare game showed up on Nintendo of Japan's WiiWare page. Mahjongg Wii: Ide Yousuke no Kenjou Mahjongg (Ide Yousuke's Healthy Mahjongg) is a Nintendo-developed, multiplayer mahjongg game with Mii integration and online play. It also features hints from a Mii of Ide Yousuke (who is apparently a famous mahjongg player, and whose name appears in countless mahjongg game titles).

Even though we just found out about it, Nintendo plans to launch it in Japan next week, at a cost of 1,000 Wii Points. However, because it's a mahjongg game, we would be even more surprised to see it released elsewhere.

[Via Gamespot Japan]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/surprise-mahjongg-game-hits-japanese-wiiware-next-week/&cuid=98:1195555&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

Mario beheaded by Banjo, everybody freaks

Filed under: News

Rare unveiled a trailer yesterday for its forthcoming Xbox 360 vehicle-based platformer Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. It looks very lovely, as Rare games often do, but discussion about the video now seems to be less about the game, and more about a brief cameo from Mario.

Towards the end of the two-minute trailer, the bear and the bird are seen flying a customized plane towards a huge model of Mario, before blasting the revered plumber's head clean off! The cheek! Later versions of the same footage have had the decapitation edited out (there is an unedited version after the break), which suggests that Rare got a slapped wrist over the (hardly scandalous) "scandal."

Anyway, with grim predictability, this scene resulted in the entire internet getting its panties in a bunch. Everywhere one looked, people were speculating boringly over what this could possibly mean. And now, Rare has enlightened us: it means nothing. Zilch. It was all a bit of light-hearted fun. Haha.

MTV's Stephen Totilo spoke to lead software engineer Salvatore Fileccia about the cameo, and came away with the impression that some rascal at Rare had constructed the Mario figure using the game's vehicle editor, and that the scene had been added to the trailer at the last minute, with Microsoft none the wiser. But before you all grab your pitchforks, know that Rare still has tons of respect for Mario, with Fileccia himself commenting at the presentation of the trailer: "Action platformers have gotten a bit stale, except for Mario."

Crisis over, then. Now back to praying for a Banjo game on the Virtual Console.

Now it's being call Mario Super Sluggers, which is an improvement in our eyes, and is to feature, as you'd expect, a plethora of characters from Nintendo's famous franchises. We're glad to see Mario is heading back to the diamond again!

The scans show off some interesting aspects of the game, including what looks like a kind of special catch system when playing in the outfield, which lets you rob players of home runs. Also, the player-specific abilities seem to be returning, as well as the themed stadiums in which you'll play ball. In the scan, you can see what appears to be Luigi throwing a kind of tornado pitch. Interesting, to say the least.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/fresh-mario-super-sluggers-scans-step-up-to-the-plate/&cuid=98:1195525&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

One third of Japanese Wii owners have Wii Fit

Filed under: News

Every week, sales charts show us that Wii Fit is popular among Japanese gamers. To give you a sense of just how well it's doing, though, Enterbrain recently reported that two million copies of the fitness title have been sold in Japan. Matched with recent reports of six million Wii consoles being sold in the region, that means every one in three Japanese Wii owners bought a copy of Wii Fit.

It hasn't yet caught up to its Nintendo cousin, Wii Sports, which has almost reached the three million mark. Yet, keep in mind that 1) Wii Fit was released a year after Wii Sports and 2) Wii Fit is a lot more expensive; it costs more than a usual Wii game, while Wii Sports costs less than the standard. To throw in another interesting comparison, Media Create sales indicate that there are almost as many Wii Fit owners in Japan as PS3 owners (with the PS3 currently having a 50,000 unit edge).

While we find it unlikely that Wii Fit will hit the same one-in-three ownership ratio in Europe and North America, we have little doubt that the exercise software will do well in those regions, too. Let it be said that Nintendo definitely understands the casual market.

Buried in the latest Japanese Namco Bandai financial report, in a chart showing their sales projections per game for 2008, is the first mention of a Taiko no Tatsujin (Taiko Drum Master) game for Wii, planned for late this year. The company released Ennichi no Tatsujin (Festival Master), a spinoff minigame collection, as a Wii launch title, but this would be the first for-real Taiko on the Wii. They expect to sell around 500,000 copies, the same as they project for Family Trainer.

We're anxious now for an official reveal, because we want to see how the controls will work. Will it use a drum controller, or will players be asked to air-drum with the Wiimote and Nunchuk? There's also the third, more unlikely, option of hitting a drum with the Wiimote, though that would get expensive.

Level-5 is sinking big money into their DS soccer RPG Inazuma Eleven, seemingly expecting a massive return. The company held a press conference in Tokyo to outline the "Cross-Media Project," which is a somewhat nicer way of describing "milking the new franchise." In addition to the planned manga and anime series, Level-5 president Akihiro Hino revealed an upcoming Inazuma Eleven card game, to be released concurrently with the DS game on August 22.

Along with all this stuff, Level-5 announced a second game, Inazuma Eleven Break, for consoles. No specific console or date was announced, but it's not hard to guess which home console Level-5 would choose for a mass-market children's game. They'd choose the one with a mass market.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/inazuma-eleven-headed-to-consoles-wii-likely/&cuid=98:1195377&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

MySims Kingdom: The Home of Princess Butter

Filed under: News

In a press release sent out this morning, EA revealed some details of the new MySims sequel, MySims Kingdom. Fascinatingly, Kingdom is designed as more of an adventure than its predecessor, with things like a story and goals other than "build stuff and make friends."

That's still the basic gameplay, but this time you're building (medieval) stuff and making (ye olde) friends at the behest of King Roland (and his daughter, the amusingly-named Princess Butter), who charges you with improving his kingdom. As you build and achieve goals, you'll unlock new building capabilities including bridge-building (or at least bridge repair). These will allow you both to increase the size of your kingdom and to expand into other kingdoms, each with their own unique inhabitants.

Surprisingly, given the setting, you'll also be able to create electrical devices. We assume you will then be run out of town by a frightened mob.

Gallery: MySims Kingdom
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mysims-kingdom-1/805115/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mysims-kingdom-1/805114/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mysims-kingdom-1/805113/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mysims-kingdom-1/805112/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/mysims-kingdom-1/805111/">

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/mysims-kingdom-the-home-of-princess-butter/&cuid=98:1195177&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

Mad World to make violence cheerful again

Filed under: News

Are you sick to the back teeth of violence being so goddamn depressing? If so, Platinum Games, the developers formerly known as Clover, are right with you! In the latest edition of Famitsu, Platinum director Shigenori Nishikawa has declared that "cheerful violence" and "curb brawler" will be the themes of the company's first Wii title, Mad World. Echoes of God Hand, perhaps?

Mad World was unveiled yesterday through a shaky, grainy and spectacularly bloody video. Sporting heavily stylized black-and-white visuals, the only color to be found in the game was in the fountains of blood that regularly filled the screen. According to Famitsu, ultra-violence is very much the name of the game, which stars a troubled protagonist dedicated to committing his ultimate slaughter.

If you missed the footage (it was constantly being removed from video sharing sites), go past the break to catch up, and see how having a road sign lodged through one's face doesn't have to be a miserable affair.

You got it, this is none other than the drum kit that will be utilized in Guitar Hero IV. Looks kind of weird, if you ask us. But, hey, maybe the thing looks goofy, yet has a great feel to it? We'll have to wait and see.

As you can tell, it's different from the Rock Band drum kit in several ways. For one, it would appear the kit only has 3 face drums, with two weird high hat-looking things above the main drums, along with the requisite bass pedal. Will this be an easier drum kit to manage than the one bundled with Rock Band?

Update: Whoops, fixed some oversight on our part. Sorry for the mistake.

[Via Joystiq]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/game-informer-reveals-guitar-hero-iv-drum-kit/&cuid=98:1195170&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

'Strong chance' Eternal Darkness will return, but will it be for Wii?

Filed under: News
One of our most favorite GameCube games is Eternal Darkness. Even though the combat isn't that great, the game just did a wonderful job of screwing with our mind. When a game screws with you to the point that you believe it when it tells you that the memory card inserted into your console has no data on it, causing you to reboot the system and access the memory card directly, its experiences stick with you. At least, it stuck with us.

Now, Silicon Knights' Dennis Dyack has commented that there is a pretty good chance his company will be returning to the IP for another title. "There is a chance; we love all the games we work on," he commented. "We don't want to be pigeon-holed [into a genre], we want to be known for strong content...There's a strong chance we'll return to it, but there's no announcements yet." So, good news for fans of the first title, however this is likely going to be a sore spot for some of you. Even though they remain open to developing a game for the Wii, with their work on the Too Human trilogy, the likelihood of that happening is probably pretty slim right now.

Who else would do despicable, disgusting things to play an Eternal Darkness sequel on the Wii?

[Via Go Nintendo]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/strong-chance-eternal-darkness-will-return-but-will-it-be-for/&cuid=98:1194677&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

That Other Guy's Life as a King

Filed under: Imports, Screens

With Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King out and tempting obsessives with DLC, it's easy to forget about the other Wii simulation game about a tiny king building a town: Ousama Monogatari (King Story). The latest screens show off King Story's unique textured style well, but they also reveal three of the jobs that the magical king Corobo can force people to take on.

Soldiers (possibly translatable as "grunts") stay close to the king and protect him with close-quarters combat. Carpenters, labeled "normal," act both as builders and architects, designing and building new structures and roads for the town. And farmers, described as "serious," dig holes and plant crops.

Sure, these may seem obvious, but we don't think we can expect normal real-world logic to apply in a game about a kid whose magic crown makes everyone do what he says.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/that-other-guys-life-as-a-king/&cuid=98:1194367&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

Blast Works Depot open as part of MiiPlaza.net

Filed under: News
Blast Works Depot, the official site for uploading and trading user-created Blast Works content, is now online (despite the game's current lack of availability). Rather than creating a fancy new corporate-designed website, Majesco worked with an existing Wii community website, <strike>Wii Fanboy</strike> Mii Plaza.

It's kind of a brilliant idea -- (some) Wii owners are already used to sharing content on Mii Plaza, and Blast Works content now uses the same interface for trading levels, enemies, ships, bullets, and shapes. Oh, except you can upload and download directly from inside the game. Now all we need is for the game to come out, and for other people to buy it and create interesting things!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/blast-works-depot-open-as-part-of-miiplaza-net/&cuid=98:1194830&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

Wii Warm Up: Best use of Wiimote controls yet?

Filed under: Wii Warm Up

After reading Joystiq's hands-on write-up of Skate It for the Wii, we were thrown back by one particular comment: "Skate It's control is one of the best gameplay implementations of the Wiimote yet." Wow, what a statement!

We were all excited about Skate It, even more so when we found out it featured Balance Board support, but now we're even more pumped to try it ourselves. But, does it tout one of the best Wiimote control schemes yet? We'll have to wait and see, however, in the meantime, tell us what titles you think best utilize the Wii's wonderfully unique controls? We'll get you started with an easy one: Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure.

Gallery: Skate It
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/skate-it/804365/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/skate-it/804364/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/skate-it/804363/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/skate-it/804362/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/skate-it/804361/">

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/14/wii-warm-up-best-use-of-wiimote-controls-yet/&cuid=98:1194813&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

Pachter: Wii owned in April, despite GTA IV release

Filed under: News
The NPD numbers aren't going to be available until later this week, but Michael Pachter is still doing his thing and tossing some predictions out there. With that Grand Theft Auto IV game releasing in April (and shattering records like crazy), many might think that Nintendo is going to have to relinquish its throne for a short while, like when that Halo 3 game released. Pachter doesn't think so, however, and called for another victory for Nintendo.

600,000 units is the magic number, according to the analyst, as he says Wii will once again reign supreme when the April NPD numbers release. Considering a pretty big Wii title released during that month, we're inclined to agree with the man.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/13/pachter-wii-owned-in-april-despite-gta-iv-release/&cuid=98:1194357&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google

Cheap prices are buzzing around GameFly

Filed under: Sales
If you're one of the cool kids that visits Wii Fanboy often, you probably know that we love bargains. Even more so, we love sharing them with you. We thought we'd tell you, then, that aside from Circuit City having some sweet deals this week, GameFly is also looking to take money out of our pockets.

From today to the 19th, GameFly is having a storewide sale, which means cheap games galore. The catch is that they're used, but that's not a big deterrent since the game conditions are usually tip-top.

Some highlights include:

Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law -- $14.99

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams -- $17.99

Battalion Wars 2 -- $27.99

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles -- $29.99

We also found some other nice sales over there, so it's worth checking them out if you're craving a new (yet used) Wii game.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

<img width="480" height="46" border="0" src="http://imageads.googleadservices.com/pagead/ads?output=png&url=http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/13/cheap-prices-are-buzzing-around-gamefly/&cuid=98:1194258&format=480x46_aff&client=ca-pub-3546992251556849&hl=en&adsafe=high&color_bg=FFFFFF&color_border=FFFFFF&color_link=66666&color_text=333333&color_url=337788&color_line=337788" / >

Ads by Google
