Retronauts, 1UP Show celebrate Mario

The eternally excellent Retronauts podcast returned last week for a Mario-centric episode. In our opinion, Retronauts is the best retrogaming podcast on the Internet (the best podcast on the Internet? Maybe!), and is rarely worth missing. The panel in this episode is especially great, as it consists entirely of snarky, animated people who happen to know everything about games, ever. Of course, the availability of Super Mario Bros. 3 on the VC and the upcoming release of Galaxy have us all in a Mario mood, so we can all enjoy this episode even more (if we can hear it over our own hyperventilating, a symptom of Mario Madness).

If that's not enough Jeremy-Parish-talking-about-Mario, check out the latest 1UP Show video (easily accessible at the top of this very post), which features, in addition to Super Mario Galaxy video footage and a ton of discussion, a brief West Side Story-esque musical interlude from Parish about receiving the game in the mail.

Boogie producer defends his game against reviews

Boogie producer Jean-Charles Gaudechon is not entirely pleased with the critical reception to his game. One review in particular upset him, and with good reason-- 1UP basically assassinated his game.

Gaudechon mostly defended the controls in his statement to MTV's Gamefile. "Difficultly should come from the game. It should be easy to dance. It should be tough to dance on a certain level of difficulty." He said that his team reexamined motion control schemes after SSX Blur's controls were panned as too complicated, and that Boogie's controls were focus-tested on a diverse age group.

Of course, none of that addresses the major issue found in the 1UP review, that "this game is fun for exactly 20 minutes, and only in a group of two or more." Of course, that's a little harder to respond to than specific complaints about the oversimplified, rhythm-insensitive controls.

Dirty pranks catch game journalists

It pays to really scrutinize those nifty game systems people randomly ship you -- even if you're a gaming journalist and people are often randomly shipping you systems. According to Ross Miller of big daddy Joystiq, the guys of 1UP/EGM really need to heed the above advice. GameVideos.com director Mark MacDonald pranked the staffers with a fake Wii setup that was good enough to fool a few. And you can see all the loldrama unfold for yourself after the jump. Beware, however, there's a little language at times. Naughty language.

Zelda impressions recap

Can you wait ANY LONGER?
A few days ago, Nintendo held a special press event in Redmond (we were invited, but were too busy preventing nuclear war to go) where the media could have a very long, very uninterrupted playthrough of the final build of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

No less than a dozen major gaming sites and publications have already released their in-depth experiences with everyone's favorite kinda-elf, so we've done you the favor of assembling the cream of the crop right here. The overall gist? 1) Don't wait for the Gamecube version, and 2) Holy damn this game is amazing. Of the five listed, we recommend good 'ol Matt Cassamassina's impressions; they're quite thorough.

More analysts on non-global PS3 launch, one sees Wii in better position

We've chimed in on Sony's latest blunder so now it's someone else's turn. Who wants to offer their opinionated projections? Hmm? Oh, it looks like Ben Bajarin of Creative Strategies, Michael Pachter or Wedbush Morgans, and Mike Wolf of ABI Research all have something to say. Of all the things that is said among them, Mr. Pachter's statements are the only ones that are overall Wii-positive.

"
To a limited extent, Microsoft will [benefit]. There aren't very many guys that will buy both a PS3 and a Xbox 360. There are maybe a couple (100,000-200,000) that will get a 360 instead... but a lot of people are going to buy a Wii, and it'll reverse the order of purchasing in Europe, with people getting the Wii first, then the PS3. It benefits Nintendo in the onset... MS also wins in terms of a PR battle."

Pachter seems to be pro-Wii in the wake of Sony's latest news. His recent comments prior to this story support this. Of course you all already know our viewpoints on the matter, so let's hear from you. How does Sony's latest news affect us Nintendo-loving gamers out there?

LGC Nintendo booth pics

Not bad, not bad...
To get you psyched for tomorrow's keynote speech from Nintendo, 1up has posted some early pictures and video footage from all over the show floor. Perhaps the venue isn't quite as grand as E3, but it doesn't seem as though any company is taking this event lightly. Remember, though, that no Wii games will be publicly playable...only behind closed doors to special invitees. Le sigh. Anyway, there are plenty of pretty shiny things after the jump, so enjoy the eye-candy.

An educated look at the name Wii

We haven't been reporting on the internet's reaction to the new name for the Revolution Wii because, frankly, it's all been a bunch of boner jokes and cries of torment at the completely ridiculous nature of the title. I can't speak for everyone here at Revolution Fanboy, but I don't like it. As such, the link leads to a rather calm article on the name change for the system and an analysis of several of the rumors that have tried so hard to come up with an explanation for the name outside of Nintendo wanted it that way.

One step at a time, just one step at a time...

1UP discusses the Revolution

1Up is running a feature where they analyze the current hype, the machine, and how the launch will go for the Nintendo Revolution. The piece goes on to say:

"Love it or hate it, the U.S. launch of the Nintendo DS was packed with games specifically pointed at the Western audience: Spider-Man 2, Madden '05, Asphalt Urban GT.& OK, maybe some of these should never have been released, but here's the point: Nintendo can, if pressed into action, mobilize third-party publishers to have launch games readied."

That's the most important thing for the Revolution: third-party support. If the Revolution can maintain a steady stream of third-party releases then we'll see a much more drastic shift toward Nintendo when it comes to market dominance.

"
At any rate, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told a Japanese newspaper that he sees the Thanksgiving holiday as being an important target to hit in the U.S. market, so we're probably assured that Revolution will be out by then. In stark contrast to Sony's usual method, the Japanese release may actually come slightly later, as with the Nintendo DS in 2004."

Who do you guys think will get the revolution first: America or Japan?
