Nintendo Wii takes Engadget Awards

Rockin.
Nintendo Wii Fanboy is related, in an odd sort of second-cousin once-removed kind of way, to the hyper-popular Engadget, which like totally everyone reads all the time forever. As such, their annual Engadget awards are nothing to sneeze at, and so we look with great pride (we helped, after all) at their selections for 2k6. Let's take a glance at the honors:
  • Reader's Choice: Most Innovative Peripheral
  • Reader's Choice: Game Console of the Year
  • Editor's Choice: Game Console of the Year
  • Reader's Choice: Gadget of the Year (!!!)
  • Editor's Choice: Gadget of the Year (!!!)
Yeah, that's right. That means the Wii pretty much wins at life. It's quite a series of awards, but which console will take home 2007? It may come down to one showdown: Halo 3 vs. Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Which will suck up more of the average gamer's free time? Bring it, Chiefy.

Help cement a Wii victory at Engadget

Just when you thought you were done with all those pesky 'best of 2006' lists, Engadget offers one you might actually care about -- peripheral of the year. As you might have guessed, the Wii remote is one of the options, and just like Reggie, it seems to be kicking ass and taking names. Voting ends April 15th, and it's just one vote per person, so if you'd like to go help let everyone know that the Wii controller is way cooler than the 360's HD DVD drive, get voting.

We sort of feel sorry for the other entrants. Look the Mighty Mouse is cool and all (it's so smooth!), but there's nothing like your Wii remote. Well, except perhaps your remote, but until you're using that to get your Zelda on, we don't want to hear about all that.

Can't find a Wii? Try to win one from Engadget!

We've been asking for awhile now and have been trying to keep you guys updated on where and when you can get your hands on a Wii, but there are still some of you out there who haven't been able to get your hands on a console. Well, we have one solution for you: enter Engadget's contest for a free Wii. See, those guys are celebrating their third birthday, giving away tons of prizes, and their second day giveaway is none other than a Wii.

You know what makes the deal that much sweeter? 10,000 free Wii Points with the console. That gives you enough points to catch up with all the Virtual Console releases you missed!

How to make a Wii laptop: part 2 and 3

Remember that awesome Wii Laptop the folks at Engadget made? Well, we posted their first how-to in a series of three, teaching all of us the know-how needed to craft our own. What we neglected to mention, however, was that parts two and three have both been published for your viewing pleasure. So, in case you're still stuck around step one (given that you were able to procure a spare Wii to try this on), have at it and complete the project. Don't forget to let us know how it went!

Make a Wii laptop: part 1

Remember that Wii laptop that Engadget made a few days ago? Well, they received such a demand for a post on how they did it that they decided to do it. The post on how to do it, that is ... We aren't making much sense today, are we?

Anyway, the post is just the first part in a proposed multi-part lesson. By the length of the first post, we could've easily thought otherwise. Still, if you're hesitant on doing this yourself, even given the incredible thoroughness the Engadget folk subject the reader to, then we suggest you still read it. The post is chock full of hardware pr0n.

Engadget puts a Wii in your lap

Or should that be on your lap? Either way, one thing's true -- our cooler, better looking Engadget office mates never let us play with their toys, and they get all the best stuff. Sigh. Well, in this case, they make all the best stuff, and soon, they're gonna show you how to create your very own Wii laptop. This bad boy isn't made to just sit around and look pretty, either; it's the real deal tucked into a portable package. Scope the features:

  • 16:9 widescreen LCD, 7-inch diagonal
  • Stereo sound
  • Gamecube controller port
  • Built-in short range sensor bar
  • Ports for original sensor bar and A/V output jacks (for use on external display)
  • Built-in power supply and compartment for power cord
  • Dimensions: 8.5 x 7.7 x 2-inches
Next week, they're going to start putting up a step-by-step tutorial for those of you who suddenly find themselves with a nice, new burning desire for portable Wii action. And if you want to see this one in action, you can head over and check out the video and a huge image gallery showing off the Wii laptop from every angle.

Wii start up disc is used for console set up

Remember when we learned about the mysterious "Startup Disc" from the back of a Wii box? Turns out the disc will be used once to set up your Wii on its initial cycling of power. One Joystiq reader, and Engadget blogger, named Paul miller snapped the above picture of a Wii kiosk in a South Shore Mall Software Etc. store, located in Bay Shore, NY. The message, which is in English, Spanish, and French, reads:

"Please insert your Wii Startup Disc. This will set up your Wii console."
